SPECIAL FEATURES
STRENGTHS
  • Field Scanner. Able to detect various forms of energy and matter, and provide a rudimentary assessment. This could also supplement combat triage and first aid, though was not as accurate as a medical scanner.
  • Interactive Hologram. Information was displayed in a tactile graphical user interface, typically arrayed as a series of "windows" or "bubbles" projected in front of the wearer.
  • sithO/S Compatible. When connected to a sithO/S computer, can serve as the holo-emitter for displaying information or as the microphone for voice-enabled commands.
  • Locator Chip. If you've fallen down a well or been captured by the Jedi, surely your dark master will come for you?
WEAKNESSES
  • Limited Information. The unit was too small to provide comprehensive data, and was more accurate at close range than at a distance.
  • I'm Getting Some Interference. Due to the small size of the com-scan link, its effective range could be limited by natural, atmospheric, or electromagnetic forms of interference.
  • On The Grid. The Sith know where you are.
  • We're Listening. The com-link could be triggered remotely, such as by a slicer or a higher ranking Sith official, turning this into a security vulnerability at best and leading to many an apprentice writing a check with their mouth that their posterior was unable to clear at the bank.
  • Scarlet Letter. This straight up says "I'm A Sith". Wearing this for a stroll on Alderaan is maybe not the best look.
  • Limited Power Cell. Small unit, small power cell.
DESCRIPTION
Project #5 was a commission to deliver an improved field scanner for use by Sith forces. Micah tol Powl Micah tol Powl 's entry was a proof of concept that leveraged organoform circuitry to aid in miniaturizing and accelerating the processing speed of the prototype. This was a suggestion from Madrona A’Mia Madrona A’Mia , the boy's alchemy instructor at the Korriban Academy. The integrated field scanner was capable of providing an analysis of energy and matter with the level of detail falling off sharply beyond ten meters. While not as effective as a life-form scanner, it could register and triangulate movement. The com-scan link could attempt to interface with other devices using the Universal Data Exchange format.

The com-scan link was typically worn as one would wear a military badge or decoration, typically on the right or left side of the chest for a human or near-human species. Some species opted to integrate the piece into a belt or strap, particularly if their physiology didn't permit the typical placement.

While not possessing the same level of security encryption or data as a code cylinder, the locator chip present in the com-scan link did enable lower level security systems to detect, verify, and admit the wearer (provided that they were authorized to access the space or system in question). However, the locator chip also represented a danger in that higher ranking Sith could both monitor the individual's location and remotely access the link in order to both hear and "see" (holographic recreation) what was happening on the other end. A fact that could be exploited by a well-equipped slicer as well.

Though not the winning prototype, as the project architects envisioned an improved standalone field scanner, the versatility of Powl's design resulted in the Sith Order putting the prototype into mass production. As with all projects designed by Powl, this was ostensibly done by Snark Industries, though the company was itself a state-owned farce to provide the apprentice with some sense of ownership or accomplishment.
