The tournament simulation is extremely detailed. Every element of your starship, all the void beyond, each gesture and comment of your crew - it all seems real. Your starfleet is drawn from historical designs, the kind that still see use here and there in the Outer Rim. You command:Your enemy has the exact same starship types. You've given all your ships their own names; naturally, they're better than the names your opponent chose for the enemy fleet.

The scenario is fairly straightforward. You will battle over a small, abandoned industrial moon. The light halo around the moon is composed of miniature satellites in low orbit; within that shell, your ships will need to burn at full power to avoid crash-landing. The satellite shell won't do much damage to your capital ships, but collisions could be lethal to starfighters.

OOC/ The battle will last one week, or until one of you concedes, or longer if both of you agree. If one of you fails to post within the first two days, a new opponent will be subbed in. Maira will start at the left side; Andorreth will start at the right side. You can assume that standard weapons range is about half the length of the image. Victory/defeat should be pretty straightforward for you to determine between yourselves; I'll pick a winner if both of you feel you've won.

I'd asked for experience with fleeting and they'd thrown me into a simulation. I stood on the command deck as the other ships in my fleet jumped in behind mine. From the bridge I began issuing orders to the frigates one to move into position alongside the escort carrier and the other alongside the frigate as I gave orders to form two distinct battle groups the heavier force of my command ship a star destroyer, escort carrier, and a frigate with the remaining frigates out in front. After calling out the orders I gave one more for the compliment of fighters aboard the guard battle group to launch. Splitting them into two groups of 12 now to wait for the enemy commanders response...

OOC/ I wasn't able to find you a dance partner, so you get to fight my Hutt. You'll be advancing to the next round regardless; let's just take this as an opportunity for practice. Post inbound.

"Is nice boat for hoomin." Jorga swiped a hand through his holographic first officer, who looked mildly offended. A short slither put Jorga at the bridge viewport. He rested his broad and sticky forehead against the transparisteel and squinted into the simulated void.

"Is launch ALL the fighters."

"Ah, Captain," said the hologram, "might I suggest rotating out a few squadrons at a time. Fighter swarm tactics can lead to collisions, and we don't want all our fighters running out of fuel and munitions around the same time."

Jorga's nostrils flared. "Launch all fighters. Put bombers behind us with half the little flat fighters. Put other half in front with pinchy-pinchy interceptors." He made pincery motions with his fingers, a rough approximation of TIE Interceptor wings. "Is make screen in front of all big ships. Put the four ships in front of us, yes?" He reared back, leaving a forehead-print on the window, and pointed out a line, left to right. "Lancer, Neb-lon, carrier, Lancer. And point us at carrier by turn us fifteen dee-gree to right."

"Starboard, sir."

"Right."

Sensors registered a swarm of fighters released from the opposing fleet. Speaking to the first officer I said "Officer raise shields and array point defense lasers in anti fighter protocols. Also instruct other vessels to begin anti-fighter fire protocols at this time. Begin moving first battle group consisting of escort carrier, frigate, and Lancer frigate into a defensive position. Instruct escort carrier to launch all bombers and all Tie Interceptors and the interceptors to break off into six four man wings alongside two Tie bombers and four TIES per wing. Repeat Instructions I need six squads of four interceptors, two bombers and four TIES. Target critical systems of the Carrier and target for disabling."

"Instruct all remaining TIES in flight to begin patrols and all TIES aboard command ship to launch and split into three twelve man groups. Begin moving fleet forward to port twenty degrees and a hard burn with engines to bring us withing range. Once main fleet is within firing range begin firing Ion cannons on weapons and shield generators."

"Hurm. Is go left. Right, to us. Starsboard. Is get high ground!" Jorga clapped once in glee. "Is mash us against moon. Crunchycrunchy. We is pointed at carrier?"

"Yes, sir," said the indistinguishable human holo. Humans really did all look the same unless brass bikinis were involved.

"Is move Lancers forward liddlebit on flanks. Can we be of the shootings?"

"No, sir. No vessels are in range at this time. The soonest opportunity for...shootings...will be when these six starfighter groups - sixty ships, including twelve bombers - come closer to our carrier."

"Carrier is block shot." Jorga stabbed a plump finger at the viewport, leaving an ovoid of grease. "Make dive littlebit. When big guns shooty, no hit carrier. Get fighters out of way too. Send half swirly-swirly behind each of Lancers, keep safe. Must keep treasures safe, holoboy. Watch out fighters by Thing One no run into satellite mess-ness."

FORMATION OVERVIEW

Fleet Status
  • ISD II (Ardent Valor) Shields 100% Hull 100% (All fighters deployed. shuttles in hangars)
  • Nebulon B (Avalon) Shields 100% Hull 100% (All fighters deployed)
  • Escort Carrier (Rogue) Shields 100% Hull 100% (All bombers, interceptors, and fighters deployed)
  • Frigate (Dank) Shields 100% Hull 100% (Shuttles in hangars)
  • Frigate (Memes) Shields 100% and Hulls 100% (Shuttles in hangars)
Fighter group A (BY ISD Ardent Valor)

36 fighters TIES, 12 Interceptors, 6 Bombers

Fighter Group B (Along Frigates Dank and Memes)

24 TIES, 12 Interceptors, 6 Bombers

Looking at the tactical readouts I said "Order 6 and twelve of the ties of the interceptors in Fighter group B to begin plotting an attack pattern to disable the escort frigates I want them softened up a bit. Bring frigates Dank and Memes into a V formation with Fighter group B maintaining a position behind them and begin moving Dank and Memes forward at a 45 degree angle to angle fire towards one of the opposing frigates and fighter groups. Fighter group A is to hold it's current course along the Ardent Valor. Begin moving us in close enough to fire guns I want to give those frigates a broadside, angle the starboard shields to cover against return fire and maintain our hard burn towards the starboard side of their fleet. Bring the Avalon into battle group A with the Ardent Valor I want to give us as much cover as we can moving in."

OOC: I may be off on this but I think your fighter count may be off a bit. I haven't had coffee though so I can't Math. Could be you're completely correct and I'm an idiot.

OOC/ Double-checked the count and I think I'm good.

The attack came in three stages, so far as Jorga could understand it. First came small TIE groups that probed the Lancer frigates’ defenses and whittled down their shields. In fairly short order, though, the frigates’ specialized anti-fighter guns, coupled with fighter groups B and C, would drive them off or wipe them out.

The second phase came as a tight formation: two Lancers charging, apparently against Thing Two, with a mass of fighters behind. TIE fighters and Thing Two's quad lasers didn't have a prayer of hurting those two frigates quickly. That role would have fallen to Jorga's bombers, but they were currently hidden behind his flagship. Said flagship couldn't really get a clear shot at the oncoming frigates, for two reasons. Thing Two and Fighter Group C were in the way, and the Noble Grub’s massive cannons were focused on the enemy Nebulon-B.

The Ball of Snortings, however, had a clear shot at the oncoming frigates now that the escort carrier had sunk a little below the formation's plane.

Meanwhile, the Noble Grub's starboard turn continued, bringing its point to bear against the Avalon and the Ardent Valor. A Star Destroyer could bring Hell with a broadside, but its triangular hull had been designed to focus all weapons forward. Effectively, that let the Noble Grub bring twice as many weapons into play as the Valor could manage side-on.

Fighter Group A, meanwhile, shifted to stay behind the Noble Grub.
