[*]Accessibility: It isn't considered to be a secret or classified facility, but given the desolate surface and harsh climate of the planet, it isn't difficult for Fort Typhos to generally go undetected.
[*]Description: Fort Typhos is a large military base on the arctic Ilum system. In the interest of security of both the Iron Empire's current borders and protection of it's citizens, the base was erected along with an array of planetary defense guns to fend of invasion forces.
POINTS OF INTEREST
- Planetary Defense Guns: The trademark of Fort Typhos, the base boasts an impressive array of large planetary defense weapon emplacements, aimed to prevent the approach of large space vessels displaying hostile intent. There is also a Tempest cannon for dispensing of capital ships among others at a greater distance.
- Droid Operations Command: Inside a large hangar hidden in the mountainside, there are rows on rows of Iron Wrath Puppet droid fighters. They are maintained by support staff and when activated, scramble to engage and neutralize enemy space vessels as designated by the command element.
- Power Plant: With such a large number of defenses, a significant source of power was needed to fuel the Fort Typhos, and in some instances, private holdings of nearby civilians that may be residing near the base that relies on it's infrastructure.
- Kyber Expeditionary Facility: There is a small outpost located approximately six kilometers from the center of the base. Dug into the mountain, it is relatively difficult to locate, even for those knowledgeable of it's whereabouts.
DEFENSES
Foot patrols are a common sight inside the base and around it's perimeter. Predator battle tanks are frequently seen at entry control points, with Slingshots often posted along the stationary weapon emplacements. They can also be seen patrolling the post, however this is a much less common occurrence.
Though the base is of a higher security level, once inside it's walls, security is more lax, with an atmosphere almost like a traditional city, only it's under martial law. Security near the fusion reactor, though, is even higher than at the gates. There is a company sized security element posted there at all times, with two others rotating to ensure a high level of alertness among the ranks. There is also a half dozen Predators and two Slingshots posted at the power plant as well. Access is highly restricted.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Despite their isolationist policies, the higher echelons of the Iron Empire recognized it was no excuse not to be ill-prepared and withhold resources from national defense. Ilum is widely renowned for it's bountiful collection of kyber crystals, used for the construction of lightsabers - it was in light of this particular fact the Iron Imperial military took note of the strategic value of the planet. Deciding on their pilot base was not a difficult decision. The construction process, however, was.
After approximately six months of around-the-clock construction, the base was deemed fit enough to begin operations at partial efficiency. The decision was made as so to begin immediate establishment of presence and defense without interfering in the construction process. It also provided construction personnel with a place to reside when inclement weather demanded postponement of the project. After another year and a half, construction concluded and slowly the base began to see an influx of military personnel and activity. The base became a regular stop for occasional outbound vessels at the beginning of their patrol route.
After several months of seamless activity, they expanded outwards and located an abandoned mine, which puzzled garrison officers, given the lack of a significant civilian presence. After clearing it and ensuring there were no unanticipated surprises, they began an overhaul of the mine, discovering the caverns to be rich in kyber crystals. The mines also house a small laboratory and office facilities for science and logistic support staff, as well as a temporary living quarters.
With a strong desire to build off the emperor's 'hearts and minds' approach to the populations assimilating to Iron Empire rule, with a surplus of power from an incredibly powerful power plant, the garrison commander reached out to a nearby village offering access to the power. Initially hesitant to accept and rely on the new base and strangers within, it quickly proved to be a wise decision. The symbiotic relationship bore the fruit of an unlikely friendship and served as a model to military commanders and wardens of the Iron Empire everywhere - success was best attained through cooperation, not conquest.
