Description:
Following the Battle of Ruusan, Firemane's leadership instituted a comprehensive programme to upgrade and augment its arsenal. Mainly Firemane-designed Silver Coalition warships had engaged a Sith Triumvirate fleet, and though the fighting was brief, it was a learning experience from which important lessons could be drawn. The programme was accelerated by the dissolution of the Silver Sanctum Coalition and the bloody Omega War.
Firemane's forces had restricted themselves to the ground battle upon the plains of Castamere and the assault on the Omega itself, but the massive space battle left a lasting impression on the corporation. Moreover, relations had soured with the Order of the Silver Jedi, which meant that the Tygaran Alliance deemed it necessary to improve its defences and become more able to defend itself. Thus the Gladius-class Assault Cruiser was born. It will also be made available to the Galactic Alliance, since Firemane has lucrative business relations with the conglomerate that has filled the void created by the Omega Protectorate's demise.
As the name implies, it is meant to be driven straight into the enemy's heart like a sword. The heavy cruiser sacrifices a hangar and possesses weaker defences than the average warship of its size, but in return it has a powerful array of close range weapons and fast speed that enables it to close in on enemies and engage them directly. Many Firemane ships played the range game, so this ought to fill an important niche. The Gladius is capable of unleashing a torrent of heavy firepower that should be devastating for capital ships, but it does not have a single squadron to its name. This, along with its weakened flak, makes it vulnerable to enemy attack craft. Where it cannot rely on speed, it will need to be supported by carriers and escort ships.
