- Cheap: X8s have excellent value for price, and can be found for less than 4000 credits in most droid dealerships.
- Versatile: X8s can perform many roles, ranging from vehicle mechanics to workshop assistants.
- Adaptive: X8s are natural problem-solvers, and have displayed surprisingly high levels of creativity.
- Cycloptic: X8s only have one optical sensor. If it stops working, the droid is completely unable to see.
- Prone To Panic: X8s are rather cowardly, and do not handle high-stress situations well.
The X8 Utility Droid was one of the Glolmark Corporation’s most successful consumer products. During the corporation’s heyday, these droids seriously rivaled R2 and BB units in popularity. A popular slogan the corporation used to market them was “When it comes to being great, you can’t beat the X8!” Many families across the Galaxy owned an X8 for repairing appliances, vehicles, and even cybernetic prosthetics. Their appearance and friendly disposition made them especially popular with children, who often gave their family X8s nicknames such as “Sparky”, “Bumpy”, or “Rusty”. Among professional groups such as pod racing teams, X8s often became team mascots, and received custom paint jobs to represent their team. While the G-Series Security Droids may have been the public face of the Glolmark Corporation, the X8 was the soul.
However, things would not stay this way forever. When the Glolmark Corporation’s use of slave labor and brutal colonization in the Unknown Regions became public knowledge, there was a mass boycott against all Glolmark products, including the X8. Many worlds held anti-Glolmark demonstrations, which included the mass smelting of X8s and other Glolmark-built droids. The X8s who were not smelted down were deeply angered by this, and their once-friendly personalities were replaced by jaded frustration.
Now, X8s are still relatively common, though far less ubiquitous than they once were. Most surviving X8s work in industrial areas, or in military applications, away from the public eye. The modern incarnation of the Glolmark Corporation still manufactures them, and uses them quite extensively. They are often deployed as field “medics” to repair G-Series Security Droids who are damaged in battle, and as on-board mechanics for vehicles like the TKV-97 Main Battle Hovertank. A curiosity that should be noted about modern X8s is that they have a tendency to go into a destructive rage when confronted with an R2 or BB series droid.
