STRENGTHS
- With Immense Firepower: The petaton-throwing turbolasers that make up the primary battery of the station pack an HUGE punch. They are a credible threat at range to battlecruisers and dreadnoughts, and have incredible power in a single shot. The turrets are also specially designed for high mobility and can easily engage targets down to frigate sized.
- Space Control: Once upon a time the First Order locked down an entire sector with a network of specially designed interdiction stations. That technology wasn't lost, and the XXX incorporates a version of that system, giving it dramatically expanded range and area of effect for its interdiction field.
- Mobility Spire: [Picture of normal stow] compared with [system in use] The long ventral spire consists primarily of heat sinks and has a powerful thruster mounted at the end, which along with several other large directional thrusters give the station a remarkable ability to re-orient itself.
- Terrestrial Control: With extremely high power turbolaser and dense shield arrays, the Goliath is capable of being configured for use as a siege platform similar to a Torpedo Sphere.
WEAKNESSES
- Comes Immense Responsibility: The Earthshaker Ultraheavy Turbolasers have a low rate of fire, with a cycle time of around 25 seconds. It just takes that long for the generators and internal mechanisms to compress and spin enough tibanna gas to build up charge, which means you can't simply put more power to the reactor to make them shoot faster.
- Stationary: Various innovations aside, the Goliath is still a spacestation, and while not strictly a fixed emplacement, it does not maneuver in space with any sort of hurry.
- Threat Axis: The Goliath is designed to face an attacking force literally head-on, presenting a broad but extremely well defended target. It is not defenseless if approached from 'below' by any means, but its primary weapon turrets necessarily have broad blind spots.
DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the venerable but still effective Golan Space Defense SpaceGun III stations of the ancient Galactic Civil War, the Goliath-class Battlestation is the First Order's attempt to provide a definitive answer for how to prevent the sack of Dosuun from ever being repeated. Initially developed as purely a defensive structure, the project expanded rapidly in its scope, gradually incorporating some of the most impressive innovations that the original FIrst Order had pioneered, and the end result is a versatile and advanced multi-role station.
The Goliath-class station is built around a supercharged reactor, the same variant that powered the First Order's former super star destroyer. The vast majority of this power is used for an extremely effective shield array, and the main battery guns, a set of six twin 2.5 petaton ultraheavy turbolaser turrets, dubbed 'Earthshaker' cannons by the engineers. A single turret firing both barrels puts out more destructive energy in those two shots than the entire battery of an Imperial Star Destroyer (approximately 5 petatons compared to 4.2 petatons). These guns have an extremely long range and are backed up by a state of the art fire control system, but as one might imagine they have a low rate of fire (for turbolasers) due to the extreme quantities of tibanna gas needed for each firing cycle. While they are not inherently unable to target smaller ships, the sheer size of the turrets and the power of the shot makes engaging corvettes and small frigates unusual at best, and a waste at worst.
This primary battery is backed up by a secondary battery of Quad Heavy Turbolaser turrets to cover the blind spots and provide a more reliable defense against smaller vessels, a massive point defense suite, and a large array of strategic-scale missile tubes. The Point Defense weapons, extensive electronic warfare suite, and the missile tubes are all linked into the Bastion Combat System, giving the Goliath an incredibly dense and effective anti-strikecraft and missile screen.
But the Goliath is more than simply a defense station. It features the unusual EIRS system originally mounted on the Keeper-class Interdiction platforms, an unusual network of probes that extends the range of an interdiction field far beyond what a single vessel is capable of. Given that the Goliath's are normally deployed as a single station or in small groups, there is little chance of one platform having the far-reaching area denial ability that the First Order demonstrated before, but they can easily lock down a section of a system.
The stations also have a large hanger, with two full wings of fighters and a couple squadrons of support craft. They also are designed to act as system-wide command and control platforms, and have the comms suite and internal facilities to support this, along with extensive room for a garrison and additional support crews. There are even manufacturing facilities to allow for the repair and rearming of capital ships.
The extremely high firepower of the main battery combined with the capability provided by the large number of strategic missiles, and the advanced sensor suite gives the Goliath the ability to operate as an anti-planetary shield siege platform akin to a Torpedo Sphere. This is not something that can be done on a whim, there are extensive configuration changes to both weapon systems, power distribution, targeting arrays, and so on that have to take place, a process that takes half a day or more at a minimum, but it gives the station a certain versatility, and a fearsome ability for it to be deployed as part of an invasion rather than only to an already occupied and pacified world.
All in all the Goliath is a thoroughly effective, albeit expensive, successor to the Golan III SpaceGun.
