Strengths:
In building the Coalition fleet Admiral Stahlmann came across one annoying problem. Due to reasons of design or other limitations, he was simply not able to employ as many attack craft squadrons in his ships as some legacy craft he had used in the Republic. Knowing the massive amount of fighters that certain enemy factions could throw into battle using this old tech, the Admiral had to settle for a new plan.
And so the Guardian Class came to be. Taking away the hanger entirely, the Admiral was able to increase the number of defence guns by 50% to create a fast, mobile flak platform for support. A pair of these frigates could provide such an output of firepower that it could help deter any mass assault.
Of course, there were other problems. With so much energy being devoted to defence guns, predictably the ship was vulnerable to escorts and capital ships alike if they could close in and attack the Guardian itself.
The ship carries some 500 crew, many of them gunners tasked with controlling and firing the many guns the frigate has. Unlike other SSC escorts it is not designed for extended operations or scouting ahead.
Overall, the Guardian is the answer to a frustration associated with being unable to utilise attack craft as other factions had historically. Thus the Guardian is a massive gun platform designed to smash attack craft. Against all other targets it is of limited use.
Development Thread: None
Intent: To create a powerful flak ship for the SSC. This ship will trade in hanger space for even more defence weapons to create a firing platform able to escort large ships in battle. Of course, against capital ships or even escorts with capital guns it is largely helpless.

- 3 x dual turbolasers (360 degree fire arc)(6CG)
- 2 x dual ion cannons (360 degree fire arc)(4CG)
- 15 x flak guns (270 degree fire arc forward) (15DG)
- 15 x point defence lasers (270 degree fire arc forward) (15DG)
- 30 x quad lasers (270 degree fire arc forward) (30DG)
- Mooring for transports. No internal hanger.
- Enhanced targeting system to combat fast moving ships.
- Enhanced coordination, allowing automatic coordination of fire on targets bearing hostile IFFs.
Speed Rating: 10
Hyperdrive Class: 2.0
Strengths:
- Taking Flak. As probably the most over-armed support frigate in the galaxy, the Guardian can put out a hideous amount of firepower. In support of other vessels it can cut up an attacking squadron or at least force them to divert their attack run.
- Ergonomic Design. With its large flat surfaces and short profile, the Guardian can concentrate firepower in a wide arc whilst presenting a harder target for other ships on the same plane.
- One Track. The Guardian is only really useful against attack craft. Even corvettes are pretty much immune to its few capital guns. Naturally, anything with a few capital guns of its own will overpower the Guardian.
- No Hanger. To make room for additional firepower the Guardian has no internal hanger space at all, though it can moor transports underneath. This means that the Guardian has no attack craft escort itself.
