GENERAL INFORMATION
Unit Name
: Gurlanin Infiltration Unit. Nicknamed the Stygian Avengers. Enyo disapproves of the nickname, but her siblings like it.
Affiliation: Archangel Research and Design, Typhos Clone Family, Enyo, Iron Fist Consortium, Revenant Industries.
Classification: Black Ops.
Description: Gurlanin are a rather obscure alien species, but one with very potent abilities. They are highly skilled shapeshifters, able to assume almost any form, including that of a human. In their normal state they are canines whose bodies are covered by black fur and who have extremely sharp teeth and orange eyes. In addition, they are masters of concealment and possess potent telepathic abilities, though these are limited to members of their own species. They are also long-lived.

Gurlanin operatives can be a boon to whoever commands their allegiance, though their abilities can also easily make them dangerous to their supposed allies, as the Galactic Republic discovered during the Clone Wars. The Gurlanin Infiltration Unit is a group of Gurlanin operatives who serve Enyo Typhos. GIU is a very bland name, but Enyo does not favour dramatic ones. Much to her annoyance, her clone siblings sometimes call them the Stygian Avengers to annoy her.

As the name implies, the GIU specialises in infiltration, scouting, sabotage and assassination. Their polymorphic abilities make the operatives ideal spies and commandos, and they have received extensive training. This allows them to blend into galactic society. Archangel does have access to shapeshifting HRDs, but these are extremely exclusive and far less numerous, and thus the GIU is a good alternative. They may be deployed in advance of an assault force to gather intelligence or commit acts of sabotage. Their skills also make them good at surgical strikes against specific targets. Furthermore, they are very good trackers.

The GIU is one of the more exotic units at the disposal of the Typhos Clone Family, which secretly controls Archangel and its associated enterprises. Enyo, who is a bit of a control freak, tends to favour droids since she can control them more easily due to her technopathic abilities. As a result, she keeps close watch on the shapeshifting canines. They often work together with the Lurkers, a team of elite Infiltration HRDs. Sometimes they are also employed to keep an eye on Enyo's lieutenants in her syndicate. Here and there, they may be assigned in an undercover role. All the Gurlanin in the unit are clones, grown by Archangel after Enyo was able to acquire their DNA. Ironically, this is how Archangel originally created Enyo.

The group is led by Dharat, one of the first clones. At first she was considered too feral, but Enyo liked her fighting spirit and decided to teach her how to direct it. She has undergone a thorough conditioning process to make her pliable and obedient to Enyo's commands. This has made her very ruthless, but not fully stamped out her personality. As Enyo herself knows, organic unpredictability can make clones evolve in unexpected ways.

Dharat is quite flamboyant, adventurous and has a dark sense of humour, enjoying the thrill of spycraft. However, she displays a certain ferality and bouts of viciousness in battle. She does not hesitate to use her sharp teeth to rip a target's throat out. Her own experiences, as well as the indoctrination she has received from her mistress, has made her quite contemptuous of 'Core World civilisation'. Having been raised by Archangel, Dharat, like the other clones, only has limited knowledge of the traditions and customs of her people, but her shapeshifting and tracking abilities are very potent.

Combat Function: The Gurlanin Infiltration Unit, or Stygian Avengers as some clones insist on them calling much to Enyo's annoyance, are a unit of scouts, spies and commandos. Their greatest strength lies in their shapeshifting abilities, inherent stealthiness as well as their impressive coordination. Their role lies in espionage, assassination and surgical strikes, not frontline combat. They forego integrated heavy support to stay mobile.

When they strike, they do swiftly and mercilessly, before swiftly withdrawing. Being a mobile strike force, they suffer in pitched frontline combat or direct assaults on enemy fortifications. Several members of the unit are skilled sharpshooters and they have a preference for finesse weapons such as sniper rifles, poisons, garrotes, molecular stilettos and stealth carbines. Disruptors are also popular.

The GIU may be deployed in advance of an assault force to gather intelligence or wreak havoc, or operate wholly independently. Their tracking abilities are particularly useful in the wilderness. They may also be used to pursue specific people, such as fugitive captives or agents who have gone rogue. However, the unit is very small, and they operate in small teams.

The unit has access to Fenris Cyber Mastiffs.
These cyber-dogs are very dangerous combatants at close range. They are also useful for scouting, pursuing and tracking targets. One could consider them a cybernetic version of kath hounds. They are usually 'skinned' to appear like regular dogs, kath hounds or other canine like animal. The GIU can call upon drone support for reconnaissance, espionage as well as targeted strikes against select targets.

Strengths:

  • Gurlanin are polymorphs. Thus the agents have the ability to assume almost any humanoid form. Moreover, their ears are located in their snouts. Thus they can use echolocation to detect prey by snuffing loudly in the general direction of their quarry. Moreover, Gurlanin have inherent concealment abilities, even from the Force. Combined with their impressive combat abilities, these traits make them crack scouts, commandos and spies. They are very good infiltrators.
  • Gurlanin can communicate with each other via telepathy. However, this ability does not extend to non-Gurlanin.
  • Fenris cyber hounds are fast, ferocious and powerful at close range. They are also useful for scouting.
Weaknesses:
  • Small unit. They are commandos, spies and scouts, not assault infantry, and operate in small teams. Their training, combat function as well as the fact that Enyo simply does not want a ton of shapeshifters who could potentially become a threat limits their numbers.
  • Tying in with the above, they are at a serious disadvantage against entrenched fortifications, formations of heavy armour such as tanks and walkers and so on, as they forego heavy weapons. They are a finesse unit, not heavy infantry, and lack integrated heavy support.
  • The Gurlanin track via echolocation, and sonic weapons can interfere with this and even turn out to be very disorientating.
  • The cyber hounds must get into melee with an enemy in order to hurt them. With a limited brain, the Fenris carries out orders it is given, but shows little adaptability or initiative. It will charge an enemy by the most direct way. Even with the vibrofangs, the Fenris is ineffective against any material a vibroknife could not also penetrate. This includes heavy armour, vehicles etc.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The Gurlanin are a rather obscure species of shapeshifting predators native to the planet Qililura in the Mid Rim. By the time of the Clone Wars, the planet had been colonised by humans. This led to strife with the natives. The Separatists set up a base to develop biological weapons designed to kill clone troopers. Clone commandos were able to destroy the base by enlisting the aid of the Gurlanin, who sided with the Republic on the condition that they would remove the Separatists and the colonists.

After the Separatists had been forced off the planet, the Gurlanin expected the Republic to live up to its end of the bargain, though the colonists had also helped force the Separatists to withdraw. Initially, the Republic wavered. The colonists, armed and trained by Republic troops, felt betrayed and refused to leave. The Gurlanin leaked information to the Separatists. This led to the destruction of a Republic transport with over ten thousand soldiers. The fear that Gurlanin spies had infiltrated Coruscant and stood ready to wreak havoc convinced the Senate to remove the colonists by force. Once they had been forcibly evacuated, the Gurlanin spies returned to their homeworld. However, the planet was later conquered by the Empire and then the Yuuzhan Vong.

Flash forward several centuries, Enyo Typhos had just destroyed her creators and taken over Archangel, a genocidal machine cult masquerading as a legitimate droidmaker. Under her rule, Archangel turned away from scheming to wipe out organic life and usher in an Age of Steel of well-ordered machines. Though it gave up on dreams for galactic omnicide, many aspects of its business model remained unchanged.

There is seldom any malice in what Enyo does. She simply views most organic being outside of her family as tools to be used or discarded as necessary. Aside from Archangel's droid army and HRDs, she also inherited its significant cloning capabilities. After all, she and all her 'siblings' are Force clones. Enyo had heard stories about the Gurlanin during her time building up a criminal enterprise and organising an insurgency against Archangel. However, she had given them little credence at the time. In any case, she lacked the opportunity to pursue curiosities.

However, this changed after her takeover. Archangel's databanks contained information on the polymorphs, as Archangel had taken an interest in them due to its limited ability to build more of its HRD shapeshifters. Thus Enyo decided to acquire more information on these creatures. At the same time she tried to take advantage of the turmoil caused by the collapse of galactic powers such as the First Order and the Galactic Alliance to expand her enterprises.

Enyo ended up helping a group of Gurlanin who were being exploited by an Imperial warlord, who sought to harness their prowess. To this end he conducted experiments to try and replicate their polymorphic abilities. The Cyborg had originally intended to work with the warlord, but ended up assisting the polymorphs for payment. They were not interested in pledging themselves to her and did not believe in such a thing as life debts. She could respect that, since she regarded the concept as silly. However, she used the chance to secretly acquire some of their DNA.

After returning to Archangel's mobile base, she handed the sample over to her scientists. Zakarias Vont and Enyo's clone sibling Thuella supervised the project. The cloning process was not easy, as Gurlanin are a rather unusual type of creature. The first specimen were completely feral and went berserk after waking up. A few of them had to be put down. Some proved more compliant after conditioning. Eventually the project achieved success. Enyo took a personal interest in raising the clones.

It was rather ironic that she was creating clones to be servitors, as this was exactly what Archangel had done with her. However, she was more straightforward in her approach. She had originally been obedient to Archangel, but then they had squandered her loyalty. She believed she could do better. They were useful resources, after all. The Gurlanin would serve her as special operators, and she would treat them well in return, as long as they obeyed her orders. The best chains were those that the chained could not see. She decided to forego a killswitch, perhaps because her creators had inflicted one on her.

The clones were given the best conditioning and flash memory induction that Archangel coul provide. It taught them what they needed to know about the Galaxy, Archangel and their place in it. It also granted them advanced martial abilities. After decanting, the clones were placed in small teams. Their training was harsh, but not wasteful. The Gurlanin were pit against each other in duels, but these were not to the death.

They had been difficult to create and condition, so she did not want waste such a valuable resource. Moreover, her own creators had forced her to murder one of her siblings to test whether the brainwashing had worked. They were trained in espionage, martial arts, marksmanship and piloting. Enyo even set up a mock base for them to infiltrate, pitting them against organic and droid minions. Part of their survival training took place on
Gehenna, a hellish, inhospitable planet with a toxic atmosphere, deserts and active volcanoes, and on Hoth.

Later they were deployed to Vorzyd, where they honed their infiltration skills by blending into the society of the mega-city and conducting operations against Enyo's corporate and criminal competitors. There they also unmasked traitors in the Iron Fist Consortium, Enyo's paramilitary group and criminal syndicate. The underboss they were investigating had expected droids and prepared accordingly, but not lupine shapeshifters. After completing their training, the operatives were inducted into Archangel's special operations division.
