Velok the Younger
When I Was A Young Warthog
Image Credit: Imagine a missile. A chunky missile.
Intent: As discussed with the Goat, to update the Maelstrom II and II/e to modern standards, and speed the approval of the Aza'zoth Flak Frigate
Development Thread: No
Manufacturer: Iron Crown Productions
Model: H155-3 Maelstrom Mark 3
Affiliation: Fringe Confederation
Modularity: Miniature warheads can be proton or mag pulse
Production: Mass-produced
Material: Explosives, electronics, durasteel casing
Description: It's said by some that the Lords of the Fringe agreed to assimilate the Galactic Empire in order to gain two specific pieces of technology, and the Maelstrom is on that short list. Originally a Bastion-based Galactic Imperium product, the Maelstrom II gained popularity with Fringe starship designers, but in the end, GI and TGE tech was too outdated to be fully compatible with the Fringe's tech base. Thus, the Maelstrom III was developed.
The Maelstrom III is a submunition drone, a droid fighter designed to deploy thirty half-scale warheads simultaneously. Its shield generator is short-term only, capable of protecting it for the initial maneuver and possibly a return to base; however, attrition rates are high. Furthermore, the drone is vulnerable to counterfire. As a result, as soon as its advanced targeting systems find targeting solutions (at a range comparable to average fighter warhead targeting ranges), the drone deploys all thirty mini-warheads and attempts to return to the mothership. Each mini-warhead has the standard, limited fire-and-forget tracking and maneuvering capabilities of any concussion missile or proton torpedo. In keeping with Fringe shipbuilding philosophies, the Maelstrom III is designed for use against starfighter swarms, such as those of the Ssi-Ruuk.
