HAL TERRANO
NAME: Hal Terrano
RANK: Jedi Master
SPECIES: Human
AGE: 56
SEX: Male
HEIGHT: 6'2”
WEIGHT: 211lbs
EYES: Icy blue
HAIR: Blond, greying
SKIN: Caucasian
FORCE SENSITIVE: Yes
STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
[+] Former Archivist - Given his former almost obsessive occupation as an archivist within the Republic and the Jedi Academy, Hal has a vast realm of knowledge regarding Jedi History, locations and holocrons.
[+] Definitely Lifts - With a lifetime of regimented discipline by his side Hal still remains a fit and overall healthy individual. He has a mindset and physicality developed for endurance and despite his best days being behind him, he can still physically hang with the young guns.
[+/-] Technicolour Dream Eyes - Hal's original eyes have been replaced by mqaaq'it implants. These Yuuzhan Vong creatures, while painful to behold are useful in some senses, allowing him to see beyond the visual light spectrum and even zoom in on microscopic objects. On the other hand, the creatures also change colour depending upon Terrano's emotional state, meaning that he cannot mask his emotions when the situation calls for it.
[-] Allergic to Bacta - A very severe allergy to the medical substance means that Hal must rely upon hard to find kolto, force healing or resort to cybernetics. Application of a small quantity of bacta or a patch to Hal's skin results in a blistering rash, consumption of bacta causes severe respiratory issues, immersion in a bacta tank causes death.
[-] Lost a Step - Having formerly retired from his life as a Jedi Hal is not quite up-to-scratch in terms of skills and abilities that an active Jedi would possess. He is still in tune with the Force and still keeps physically fit, but in terms of battle he would be ill-prepared.
APPEARANCE
Having religiously trained his body for the entirety of his life, Hal's body is a well-oiled machine, blending important aspects of both strength and dexterity into his flesh. While not chiselled or overly buff, it is more than evident that Terrano has a fit and healthy body.
His hair is platinum, and greying somewhat around the borders as one would expect at his age and his hairline is constantly creeping backwards. It is kept short and generally neat, although there is a distinct lack of personal style there.
A notable feature, of course, is his implanted eyes. When feeling fairly level, he wears his natural gaze, an icy blue stare that is rather disconcerting to look at, however, the mqaaq'it's that live within those sockets change colour depending upon his current emotion.
Most interestingly, the Sith sports the scar of his removed Dark Mark in the centre of his back, it a patch of mottled flesh that has obviously been butchered at by a blade (from when he opted to try and cut it out himself). Terrano also bears several other scars, one upon his left hip from a wound received while defending Coruscant from the Omega Protectorate and Mandalorian joint effort, another from where his right knee was decimated by Vrag's slugthrower and a burn across his chest from Lira Dajenn's lightwhip. His nose having been broken before sits rather noticeably to the right.
PERSONALITY
After experiencing the tumultuous life of a Jedi Hal has come out the other end surprisingly more balanced than ever.
Formerly an awkward, rude and uncompromising stoic, Hal is now more in touch with his emotional side, although by his own standards he still remains perfectly awkward and rather unflappable. He still, however, struggles with understanding a lot of the galaxy's humour but at the very least, now he is willing to crack his own (terrible) jokes.
In having a greater understanding of his own humanity, Hal is more susceptible to negative emotions and the heat of the moment and while it would still be terribly uncharacteristic for the Jedi to fly off the handle, or be brought to anger, the possibility remains.
The foundation of his being, despite having been cracked still stands. Above all else, he feels a duty to protect those who need it and to stay his lightsaber unless absolutely necessary. Terrano will likely never rid himself of this desire to defend the weak and to alleviate the suffering of others both to the best of his abilities and in a pacifistic manner.
BIOGRAPHY
Hal, for a Jedi, has an incredibly unremarkable story. Born on Corellia, his gift of the Force was discovered at a very young age and as such he was sent away to the Jedi Order before any true attachment or bond could be made with his birth parents. Like many of those before him, he was taken to Tython to begin his training.
Growing up within the order it was discovered that Hal was more of an all-rounder, neither leaning towards the school of lightsaber combat nor Force powers. While often praised for his balance in training this meant that he never truly excelled, never noted for being the best in any of his lessons.
He did not make a large number of friends during his time upon Tython, being noted as quite a severe child while growing up. Teachers were often conflicted by the boy, the disciplinarians among the Order often left impressed while the more emotional Jedi were concerned. It was noted that between the age of fourteen and fifteen that Hal, to test the limits of his own restraint and will held a vow of silence for an entire year. It was this kind of conduct that resulted in him not having the aforementioned large number of friends and being more of a solitary character.
Although still in development Hal finally requested at the age of twenty-two that he be put to Ossus to aid the Jedi war effort and doing so had taken his first steps into the galaxy.
---
Hal and a group of equally frustrated Jedi set off upon a non-approved mission to capture and arrest Nemene Talith, a woman notorious for partaking in slavery, torture and slaughter. The group of Knights and Padawans united in their strong sense of justice had not anticipated just how capable Talith and her personal entourage of guards were and most were slaughtered in the ensuing fight with the exception of Hal and another Jedi, Leane.
In what would become a point of guilt for Hal, Nemene chose to work her way through Leane first, taking immense pleasure in the destruction of Hal's fellow Padawan. Slowly, and methodically the woman was tortured, broken and only when reduced to a blubbering mess killed.
However, Talith never returned to Hal's cell and the monstrous machinations that the Sith had for him were left unknown. Unbeknownst to Hal, the woman had perished in a slave uprising that took place not long after Leane's demise.
Left to rot in his cell surely one would think that the story of Hal Terrano ended there but that was not meant to be.
Discovered starving and on the brink of death by Darth Mierin, the Sith Pureblood rescued the man and brought him aboard her Star Destroyer. It was here he was offered a choice, join the ranks of the One Sith and receive the Dark Mark or die. Logically, there was only one choice albeit a choice of great shame and so for a brief period of time, Hal Terrano served as Darth Mierin's Apprentice, biding his time until there was an opportunity to escape.
---
In her hubris, Darth Mierin decided to introduce Hal Terrano to a prisoner of war, a Jedi captured in the battle of Empress Teta. This Jedi was Avalore Eden, a Jedi that Hal, in fact, knew.
Long before his move to the Ossus Temple, a young Hal had been on a Jedi excursion with the Padawan healer. Their duty was to oversee a small music festival, which was a very light-hearted duty for a man so serious. At first, he vastly disapproved of Avalore, finding her frankly unsuitable for the Jedi Order and far too silly and emotional but by the end of their task he found himself holding a tiny inch of fondness for her.
If not still thinking her as wildly unsuitable for the life of a Jedi.
Having still not broken free from the clutches of the One Sith and with a peer having now seen him cooperating with the enemy, Hal felt a sense of shame and disgrace that was an entirely new concept to him. It left the man feeling like a complete and utter failure, vulnerable and alone.
It one night upon Coruscant when at his lowest he chose to visit Avalore Eden in her cell down below in the Imperial Citadel. Hal did not know why he went there, or what it was that he expected to find or do but he soon found himself quickly breaking down in front of the healer, who in one of her own darkest moments came to serve as the light he so sorely needed at that time.
It was there she kissed him, and together with fellow Padawan, Johnny Diamonds the trio finally escaped the clutches of the One Sith.
---
Soon after their escape Hal gradually reintroduced himself to the Jedi Order, still very much marked by the feeling of guilt and isolation.
He was invited to live at the temple on Cato Neimoidia by Avalore, who had inherited the building from Diana Moridena, a Jedi Master who had ended her own life in the face of the rapidly conquering One Sith.
It was here that his fondness for Avalore began to truly grow and flourish as she attempted to help the man unwind and he, in turn, encouraged her to eat more porridge. After living through such a prolonged period of exposure to the Sith way of life, he found himself emotionally clinging to the healer, the woman being one of the only positive elements in his life beyond the Jedi Code.
To the man, it was almost alien to have a friend, and when he attempted to cut the Dark Mark he had been given in his time with the One Sith out of his back Avalore was there to help (and scold) him. After traditional methods of healing didn't work, the woman opted to use Force Light upon the wound. This, however, backfired and gave the healer a strange black affliction upon their hands.
Not knowing what to do, they travelled across the stars, seeking out another more experienced healer within the Levatine Sanctum, Ilyas Nyatru, who indeed managed to rid both Hal and Avalore of their afflictions although the scars were still there to tell the tale.
---
Along the way, Hal reached the rank of Jedi Knight and picked up his first Padawan. Lira Dajenn. The Force Ghost of Diana had come to both Avalore and Hal, urging them to travel to the One Sith world of Prakith to rescue the young woman of potential.
The bold and fearless Dajenn had gained both the One Sith's ire and interest after protesting against their rule upon Prakith and when the Sith cracked down upon the rebellion, Lira fought back. In the skirmish the young woman accidentally made usage of the Force, attracting the Sith to her and giving cause for them to hunt her down.
Fortunately, Hal and Avalore arrived just in time to fend off the pursuing Sith Forces and with a joint effort convinced Lira to join them upon Cato Neimoidia.
---
All the while the time Hal and Avalore had spent together had turned his feelings of fondness into something much stronger than that, or so he thought.
This culminated during the One Sith invasion of Manaan, in which Terrano opted to save the Ahto City's great library while Avalore urged him to come and help her save the civilians. This eventually turned into a ferocious argument, with both sides flinging both silly and highly personal insults, and that lead to Hal Terrano revealing to the healer that he loved her.
Avalore, shocked by his admission opted to turn and walk away, striving to help the people of Manaan and leaving Hal to crumble behind in the library.
With low morale and hurt feelings following the Republic's loss still on his back, Lira Dajenn came to him after being partly responsible for the death of 50,000 crew members aboard a Sith Flagship. Hal almost snapped, furious that his Padawan took part in such a horrific waste of life, however, he managed to reign himself in, being there for Lira in a time where she needed guidance
---
Once more Hal began to shy away from social activities, opting to dive further into the path of the Jedi Archivist.
Instead of going upon standard missions, he turned to that of exploration, excavation and knowledge. Travelling across the galaxy to study the history of the Order, he hunted old ruins and stories of rumour and legend. Sometimes the hunt was fruitless but in time the archive upon Cato Neimoidia grew and flourished with his gathered information.
It was in this period of time that the slightly despondent Hal along with Lira came across Rain, a new (but peculiar) recruit for the Jedi Order. The man seemingly lived amongst witches in a matriarchal society and came across to the pair as strange and foreign, speaking in riddles, which of course the straightforward Terrano couldn't ever hope to understand.
Avalore, now Chief Healer of the Jedi Order at this time decided that they would expand the temple, making it a hub for both healing and archiving, both more unorthodox schools of Jedi.
With his feelings for Eden still not resolved the Jedi Knight's next hunt in the realm of knowledge only took him to the next planet over, New Plympto.
He would not return.
---
It was in the swamps of New Plympto that Hal Terrano was ambushed by a very formidable member of the One Sith, Vrag.
Using a slugthrower the woman quite comfortably incapacitated the man by blowing out his knee while his boots were hampered by sodden swampland around them. Wasting absolutely no time the Sith Knight claimed her prey and whisked him off to Prakith where a horrific brand of torture awaited him.
It began slowly, methodically with physical pain being the main course which Terrano could withstand quite admirably, it was only when it came down to questions of a personal nature did his mask begin to crack, with Vrag touching upon extremely sensitive subjects that unravelled him more than the pliers ever could.
In an attempt to have him see through the 'lens of emotion' (or more likely for sadistic kicks) the woman removed the Jedi's eyes and had them replaced by Yuuzhan Vong implants, creatures known as Mqaaq'its.
That was by far not the worst torment that the man suffered there in that cell down in the bowels of Prakith's citadel. Through her absolute dissection of Hal Terrano's personality and discovering what made the man tick, Vrag continued to torment and torture the Jedi until he was nothing more than a blubbering mass of bruised and bloodied flesh.
---
A once proud Jedi now reduced to rubble, Vrag began the slow and frankly frustrating task of rebuilding the shell of a man into a tool that she could use. This, naturally, was not a simple task given his state of complete hopelessness and despair.
Initially, he did not respond well to her prompts, refusing to fight Acolytes, remaining despondent and never being spurred into any kind of action.
Intending to garner any kind of emotional response beyond shame and misery, Vrag returned with Hal to the last point where he stood a man. The ruined temple at New Plympto. It seemed at first that Hal could simply not pull himself from the lowest pits of hopelessness but then by chance, or rather through the guidance of the Force Lira Dajenn appeared to save him.
Wishing to rescue her former Master, Knight Dajenn engaged Vrag in combat right there with Terrano prone upon the ground unable to bring himself to aid the woman whom he had once saved before.
Eventually, he stirred, managing to get to his feet and throw himself into the fight not once, not twice but thrice. Sadly his efforts were wasted, getting pushed aside each time he tried to intervene and all efforts became futile as Vrag dispatched Hal's former Padawan by snapping the woman's next.
Finally, Terrano reacted.
Like a wounded beast, the formerly pacifistic man flew into an animalistic rage, attacking Vrag with his fists and feet until they were raw and bloody. It couldn't have been more perfect for the monstrous Sith, who could now truly begin the process of moulding Hal Terrano into a true Sith.
---
As the One Sith's war marched on against the Galactic Alliance, Vrag's crucial position within the Sith resulted in the woman having less time to commit to her pet project and in contemplation of his entire life and the thought of Avalore Eden Hal mustered up the courage to once more escape the clutches of the One Sith.
He had been gone for years, however, and upon finally returning to the temple of Cato Neimoidia Terrano found that Avalore had accepted his death and had moved on.
Initially, Hal struggled with this concept, a lifetime of bottling his feelings for the Jedi Healer now coming to the surface. He had chosen to uphold his own interpretation of the Jedi Code and in the end, it had cost him a chance at love, and perhaps a better life. He mulled upon this and attempted to pour his scattered energies back into the Jedi Order, eventually reaching the rank of Master.
The man had changed, however, and found himself at odds with the way that the Jedi were conducting themselves around the galaxy. Not only that, but Hal had discovered that his own former methodology for being a Jedi was also flawed and had ultimate made him a deeply defective person. Upon reflection, it was the damage done to his mind by Vrag that had brought Hal face-to-face with his own humanity.
He almost appreciated it.
Deeming himself no longer fit to serve and no longer willing to contribute to the methods of a new wave of Jedi, Hal stepped down from his active duties. Instead, the man opted to travel the galaxy, seeking lost knowledge and helping those who needed it along the way.
