SPECIAL FEATURES
- The Helios has a range of settings from which it's beam's intensity can be increased and decreased. It goes from Safe, to Warning, to Extreme, and then to Extremely Hazardous. All of these settings work in conjunction with the power of the beam. As the power and heat of the beam increases with the setting level, the higher the percent increase that the weapon will malfunction and explode out of nowhere, leading to a massive explosion of unreleased solar energy and unrefined tibanna gas cartridges.
Safe Setting - The Safe setting makes the beam give off a low-power use yet relatively strong beam that can melt through durasteel within a minute. This setting is the least dangerous one and uses up the least amount of power. This setting causes the beam to give people second-degree burns if the beam gets in contact with organic species. At this setting, the gun has a likelihood to explode at about ten percent. Although not easy to happen, it is possible for the weapon to explode at this stage. Especially if the automatic cooling system is bypassed which will overheat the batteries, and then cause them to explode of course. - Warning - The Warning setting is the second most common setting, besides the safe setting that is. At this setting, the gun can melt through durasteel within a half minute, twice as fast as the safe setting. When the warning setting is active, people are given a mix between second-degree and third-degree burns. At this setting range, the gun has a likelihood to explode at about twenty-eight percent, a much higher percentage than the safe setting at an eighteen percent increase.
- Extreme - The Extreme setting is the third most common setting, at this setting the gun can easily melt through durasteel in fifteen seconds, twice as fast as the warning setting. When the extreme setting is active, people are given third-degree burns quickly if the beam passes over them for a few seconds, specifically somewhere between five to eight seconds. If the beam passes over them for just a few seconds, they will receive a combination of second degree and third degree burns. This also applies to each setting, however the severity depends entirely on the setting level alone. At this setting range, the gun has a likelihood to explode at about forty-two percent.
- Extremely Hazardous - The EH setting is the most dangerous setting, being able to melt through durasteel with relative ease in in a very short time-frame. People are given severe third-degree burns with this setting being active, and some times people are even incinerated or their clothes can be caught on fire due to the sheer amount of hear alone. At this setting range, the gun has a likelihood to explode at about sixty-eight percent.
[*]The Helios can, effectively, incinerate infantry. Now, this doesn't happen often however. Only in very rare cases when the weapon's full power is directed onto a single individual can the beam incinerate a person, though in most cases, the person it just left with very serious and life-threatening burns. Incineration's rarely, if ever happen on the battlefield. Mostly because infantry are not a target of the Helios. Vehicles and buildings are the main target, for the most part that is.
[*]Can bypass regular deflector shields with ease, anything stronger will take more time for the beam to bypass.
[*]Can melt standard armor plating such as durasteel, anything stronger will take more time for the beam to bypass and melt through.
[*]One-eighty Degree Turn Radius
Strengths:
- [+]Bypass Shielding - The Helios can give off a scalding amount of heat within seconds of the beam initially being turned on and fired. This severe amount of heat given off, along with the beam continuously firing, can easily bypass standard deflector shields. Anything stronger than a regular deflector shield, such as a shield that has multiple layers, will take at least a minute for the beam to bypass...though depending on the strength of the shield, it can take much, much longer.
- [+]Can Melt Durasteel - The intense amount of heat the Helios can give off from it's beam can easily melt through durasteel armor and metal. However, anything stronger will take longer for the gun to melt through.
- [+]Prolonged Damage - The Helios is a proton beam gun, making it deal prolonged and consistent damage to anything it comes in contact with. This makes it's damage output relatively consistent all across the board.
- [-]Overheating - The Helios can easily overheat it's internal systems from continual firing of it's beam weapon. The gun can fire for about five minutes uninterrupted before shutting down as the automatic cooling system is activated. To try and counteract this, the engineers implemented a self-cooling system where the gun system would temporarily stop firing as cold gas flowed through it's systems to cool down the circuitry systems and electrical systems to help bring it down to an optimal temperature for firing. Once this temperature is sufficiently reached and sufficient time is taken for the system to cool, the firing process starts up once more. This whole process can take a minute and a half to a full two minutes, leaving the gun completely nonoperational.
- [-]Reload Time - Once the amount of batteries slotted into the Helios are used up, the gun needs to reload and charge up the weapon once more. At a time, four solar batteries can be loaded into the Helios gun and these batteries can last for at least five minutes, though that entirely depends upon the setting the gun is set to. If the gun is on 'safe,' these batteries can last for ten minutes. For each setting level, the amount of time the batteries last decreased by one. To reload the gun, the batteries are automatically taken out by an internal system and then replaced by fresh batteries. Then, of course, the gun has to charge up for at least one minute.
- [-]Limited Power/Ammunition - The Helios, despite effectively having unlimited ammo...has limited power reserves and ammo. While appearing to have unlimited ammo as it rarely needs to reload, it does have ammo in some sense. The Helios draws power from the solar reactor and solar batteries it is hooked up to. If it uses all of the power in the solar batteries, the gun will automatically shut down and stop working. If it draws from a solar generator, the gun can, theoretically, fire forever. However, in most cases the solar reactor will be powering different parts of the vehicle and never exclusively the gun due to the amount of resources that requires.
- [-]Lightly Armored - The Helios is not at all made to be armored. Without any armor, the gun is already extremely heavy, weighting about one-hundred tons alone due to both it's size and all of the heavy internal circuitry and solar batteries. This causes the Helios to be easily susceptible to enemy weapon and fire and easily destroyed by this.
- [-]Explosive - The Helios, has a chance to explode if the automatic cooling system if overridden, the weapon overheats, or enough firepower pierces through the metal of the Helios. If this firepower reaches one of the active solar batteries, a chain-reaction can happen which results in the Helios exploding in a large exploding...in all cases destroying the gun, mostly destroying whatever it is attached to, and blanketing the area around it in fire and excess solar radiation.
- [-]Sun - The weapon is most effective under strictly a yellow sun due to the amount of solar radiation given off to help charge the batteries. Any different sun will make the weapon less effective. The gun operates at peak performance under the gaze of a yellow sun, anything else makes it under-perform and can even cause depleted battery levels.
- [-]Extremely Expensive to Manufacture
- [-]Very Heavy
- [-]One-eighty degree Turn Radius
- Ruslan paced around the front of the room as the presentation continued as his colleague, head engineer Khariboss lectured the investors down below about upcoming economic developments for the G.W.S. and new weapon projects in the experimental process for the moment. Today, is the today, Ruslan thought. Today, the G.W.S. would reveal it's new weapon to it's investors. They needed the money, after all to keep this project, nicknamed 'REX' continually funded. Ruslan watched Khariboss continue his lecture, before he gestured to Ruslan himself. He smiled a devilish, white-toothed smile down towards the investors below as he began his pitch to them. "It's a heat ray, a proton beam, a solar beam. Whatever definition you use to describe it, that is what it is without a doubt. The Helios will be the most powerful weapon that we have created at the G.W.S. it will be out most prized and expensive product on the market. Being extremely expensive to create, the secret weapons division at the G.W.S. have only been able to create thirty of these 'Helios' weapons as we call them. The weapon can bypass basic deflector shields with ease, melt durasteel with ease and can incinerate people easily." True, incineration's weren't very common. Though, one would have to keep the drama up for these investors, after all...they were eating it up like rabbits. "These weapons are a massive economic undertaking, and will cost at the very least three billion once on the market. However...we are only selling one to the public. The reason for this, will be our ongoing venture, the REX initiative. The experimental weapons division had been developing this weapon for a few years now, and...they have been drawing up blueprints for the next thing after that. Introducing...the Kharbydiss!"
- The scale of war is ever-changing in the Galaxy, with new improvements every day in the world of military technology and weapons. One day, a large laser emplacement could be the best weapon, capable of mowing down dozens in seconds...the next? A simple slug pea-shooter that shot radioactive slugs could be the best. The face of war is and will always be ever-changing. The only constant is that people need weapons, they need these instruments of war to wage mighty battle on those that oppose their ideologies and those that they find to be insufferable tyrants who want to rule all out of fear. Hundreds of weapons companies wages economic wars on each other, always striving to get ahead of one another. The G.W.S. was one of these hundreds of companies. They were on of dozens who were lacking behind, with faltering economic growth and sales.
- With faltering growth and falling stock prices, the CEO of the G.W.S. looked for a new avenue to exploit. He called up the head engineer and told him his troubles. "I want something that make investors pour money into us," were the exact words the CEO used, "I want you to create a weapon that can dominate on the ground, and don't stop until you have created this weapon." Then, the head engineer got to work. The engineer knew his future in the G.W.S. depended on this new avenue for him, if he failed he would surely be out of the job. And if he failed, he could suffer a 'mysterious' death the next day, the CEO, Ruslan, didn't like stray ends who could leak secrets to their heart's content.
- Head Engineer and Director of Experimental Weapons, Khariboss Avinela got to work immediately. He had heard rumor of weapons which harnessed the power of the sun, weapons which could decimate entire armies at ease. Looking into these rumors, he found evidence that the Golden Company made similar weapons to those he had heard rumors about. Many other organizations made these weapons as well, however the Golden Company was the most well known. Although Khariboss couldn't get his hands on one of the Golden Companies weapons, he made do with what information he had and got to work. The first part was the hardest, designing a way for solar energy in a solar reactor to be transmitted to batteries...and then a weapon. Many insulators were used, and many failed. Eventually, an alloy did succeed in helping to keep all of the energy insulated as it was transported to the batteries...after a year of development that is.
- Progress began to go quickly after this remarkable success. Within a two year time-frame, the G.W.S. had begun to initiate field tests with these weapons. Their were many issues with overheating and occasional explosions in the gun devices...though the G.W.S. couldn't do much about that. The Helios Guns were far too expensive to manufacture to waste time with needless improvements. They made improvements where it was upmost necessary, though they couldn't afford to iron out all issues. Thus was the reason the guns can still overheat even with the cooling system and thus was the reason the guns could explode.
- The Helios proved to be an incredibly powerful ground-based weapon, being able to melt through vehicles created of durasteel with relative ease. They were able to absolutely demolish infantry units who were unprotected from the weapon's intense heat. And...the beam could bypass shielding, somehow. However and whatever the G.W.S. had done, was unknown. They kept these secrets close to heart, not allowing any other companies to intercept their blueprints.
