SETTING INFORMATION

[*]Accessibility: Security is predictably tight. No one without proper clearance is permitted entrance. That said, loitering outside or finding these buildings is not very difficult. They’re typically found in cities, usually in the industrial district.
SECURITY

Each cannery is surrounded by an electric security fence. There are four entrances, all of which sport a manned checkpoint. Droid patrols circle the building frequently. Once inside, security is more lax. Employee keycards give broad access to the entire facility. Security cameras are present throughout the facility. Security on the inside is handled by a combination of Enforcers and battle droids, though patrols are infrequent.

Unlike other Helix Syndicate facilities, auto-turrets and retinal scanners are only present in the basement level and control room. The auto-turrets only activate when intruders are detected and will open fire on anyone not logged into the facial recognition system or carrying a valid keycard.

DESCRIPTION

Like most canned goods factories, the Helix Syndicate canneries are fundamentally boring. What’s so interesting about putting food in a can? Or nutrient paste, as it currently stands. Even the Helix Syndicate is not particularly protective of them, as they have some of the most relaxed security in their holdings. While they’ve proved profitable in their sales to governments and aid groups so far, most of the value comes from their use as listening posts.

The process begins with shipment: a variety of genetically modified vegetables and meats are imported into the factory as per deals negotiated with local farming magnates. Using a variety of patented processes that are too dull and detailed to properly describe, these products are processed into a thick paste, similar in texture to peanut butter. This paste is further supplemented with additional vitamins, minerals, and then a special form of spice. The paste is then canned, labeled, packed, and eventually shipped. A smaller section of the production floor is dedicated to the manufacturing of flavoring in an effort to make these meals slightly more palatable.

This product, known as ANSR, is described in more detail here.

The most common customers for these canneries are as follows: impoverished planetary governments looking to feed their soldiers or citizens, charity organizations, private military companies, the poor and downtrodden, health fanatics, or people preparing for an impending apocalypse/military invasion.

Like other Helix Syndicate facilities, canneries serve a dual purpose as a planetary listening posts. A hidden section of the cannery is dedicated to intercepting and decrypting planetary communications. The team of communications technicians hired to carry out this daunting task do so with the help of the Aurelius-Class Decryption Engine.

POINTS OF INTEREST
  • Section Aa: Shipping and receiving, ground level. This section is a large garage and partial storage unit. Cargo speeders come through here frequently, importing needed materials and exporting product. Security oversight in this section is high.
  • Section Ab: Warehouse, ground level. Anything not yet scheduled to be shipped or canned is stored in this section. It is a large and spacious room, only dimly lit since the most frequent visitors to this section are droids who have low-light vision anyway. Everything is stored in giant pallets on large racks, or inside of large freezers. Security oversight in this section is low.
  • Section B: Production floor, ground level. This section is crowded with vats, machinery, and automatic canning machines, all chugging away in industrial harmony. Unfortunately, it smells bad, and most of the work being done here is being done by droid. This is the largest section of the facility. Security oversight in this section is low.
  • Section Ca: Administration, second floor. The production floor is remotely monitored from here. Data is also collected on production and adjustments to production speed are issued from here. If something on the production floor is in danger of breaking, it’s usually the people in this section who are the first to know. There is also an employee lounge on this level. Security oversight is moderate.
  • Section Cb: Control room, second floor. While administration handles the production floor, the control room oversees the entire facility. It is run by a smaller team of technicians, working in tandem with a H01 Artificial Intelligence. Security oversight is high.
  • Section Da: Armory, basement level. This section serves as an employee lounge for the Enforcers as well as an equipment room. It requires a retinal scan to gain entrance and is monitored by auto-turrets in addition to the usual security cameras. This is the smallest section in the facility.
  • Section Db: Droid station, basement level. When necessary, security and worker droids go down to this level for repair, recharging, general maintenance, and memory wipes. Security oversight in this section is low.
  • Section E: Officially, this section does not exist and can only be accessed via a hidden access hatch in Section Da. This section houses the listening post present in almost every Helix Syndicate facility. Planetary communications are monitored here and decrypted before being sent via HSNET to headquarters.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Surprisingly enough, the Pentastar Alignment is home to several agriworlds. Unsurprisingly, the Helix Syndicate decided to exploit these planets for their own aims and relentless profiteering. The research centers of Fort Aetherius had churned out plans for a cheap, nutritious, and slightly addictive variant of nutrient paste. After testing, prototyping, and a flagship cannery on Garqi, several more facilities were opened on other worlds to meet demands for the product.
