Hello and Inquiries

Hello all. I tried playing on this board a few years ago but found the story already well-established and I had no idea what was happening. I also found it rather hard to find people who wanted to roleplay with me. I did join a public game but I was a lone post in a sea of 30 other participating members and never felt engaged by other players or seemed to affect the overall story.

I guess my question is, would I pretty much experience the same obstacles if I attempted to join up again? I like to feel confident in knowing what the story is and the history of things as well as having a group of regular people who want to play that I feel engaged with. If not does anyone recommend a way of finding other Star Wars RPG boards that are a little less crowded?

Thanks so much!

there is not a single story, there are hundreds of stories on chaos. every character has one and others only really affect it as much as the writer wants them to. So I would say if you are going in with the attitude to be the main character and alter the galaxy... likely won't happen. If you want to come in and have fun, enjoy it and find people you can tell a story with then yes. Public threads with lots of people usually only progress with a small core group rather then a massive amount so just try joining first reply threads or smaller scales ones where you can work with another person or two to craft the story that the ones in the thread will mostly care about.

That was never what I was insinuating. I think everyone comes intending to have fun. My point was that I found it very hard to feel a part of anything and struggled to find people who wanted to roleplay. I think you answered my question though. Is there a way to find other text-based RPGs out there?

Join a major faction. Galactic Alliance, Sith Order, Mandos etc until you can get your feet wet and meet people through these groups. Majors normally have 'faction' threads and stories that generate activity on a good scale for you to find other people.

Joining a faction can help and from there the various discord servers associated with them can further help bring you closer to your fellow writers.

There’s also “First Reply” threads which are just that: the first writer to respond to the OP is the sole writer they’ll be with for the thread.

Honestly the community here is amazing and there’s plenty (myself included!) who are willing to help or write with you :)

Welcome! I'd say the 'stories' plural are well established simply in the sense that a lot of has happened via IC threads which you can expect on a number of rp sites. There are a few features here like the Timeline in Tutorial to give some summary of events but honestly there's probably too much to cover in any given snippet, a lot still happening as I type, and so much happens organically that sometimes it's better to just ask questions of what you are wanting to know regarding current events etc.

I guess you can expect this on any developed roleplay site (I do in my experience) but the obstacles are in part what you make of them. Again, in my experience, getting people to thread with you can be hit or miss and can take a bit of fishing here or there or be super quick but, since we're talking just on Chaos, this site has useful dual OOC features: LFG threads on site and making requests on its Discord server.

As was mentioned above, you can also hop onto the IC board and toggle First Reply and Open threads to hop in at your leisure without going through OOC channels. I mix up the whole variety and eventually end up with too many threads on my plate LOL. Sooner or later you're going to get somebody who bites if you don't bite first and you'll be writing away.

I did join a major faction but I kind of felt like players who had been playing together for a while had close relationships and it was hard to break in. I'm willing to give it another try though, thank you!

Welcome to Chaos! :) What kind of character are you interested in writing? Might help us nudge you in a direction to get some help getting started.

Thanks for your kindness :) I wanted to play a sort of force-sensitive teen looking for help due to some kind of force plague/illness that caused her to have no control over her powers and pose a danger to herself and others because of that. I don't know if it would be allowed but I would want to play a diathim or half-diathim species.

My other concern was how do I learn the overall story of the setting. What year are we in what factions are in power, are there any war going on etc.

Aether Princess Aether Princess do you have a Discord account? I would love to try to chat with you.

Let me see if I can help here though:

To see our what time we are in and our main events you should look at the timeline.

We are currently set 900 years After the Battle of Yavin from the Star Wars films.

To see what factions are in power you should view the map:

As you can see we have 6 major factions that are "in power" in the sense that they control the map and influence galactic wide stories.

Currently I believe the Dark Empire and the Sith Order is at war with The Galactic Alliance. I am not sure if the other factions are at war but I am going to ask and get back to you.

Edit: The Empire of the Lost is also at war with the Tingle Arm Coalition

A character like that is definitely possible :) We don't have many rules restricting character creation and don't approve character bios either. It's very free form, so if you got an idea that you like and want to try, chances are that it's possible.

As for learning the overall story, the timeline that kitter bitters linked can help, but the easiest way is to learn as you go. This site has been around for a long time and there are constantly new stories popping up. The map gives you an idea of which galactic superpowers we have (Major Factions), and following or participating in their stories can help.

I'm the faction owner for the Galactic Alliance, so I can always answer questions or help out on that front, too :)

Hello! I just joined as well, but I’m getting pretty familiar with how sites like these work. You’re welcome to join the faction I just created it’s a very VERY minor faction lol and I’d love to write with you! Just let me know!

The best advice I can give you is just jump right in. As a writer I have been around forever from well before chaos. Over the years I found few ways just take a leap.

1. Don't overly concern yourself with the over arching story of any place you start at. Start simple who your character is and what there goal or goals are. Overtime your character will meld into the larger galactic story.

2. I found just making a public thread or first reply thread and then going to lfg to promote it gets a lot of people interested new and old. I don't suggest jumping straight into faction threads even though it's something I often do myself but I sort of have a whatever happens happens attitude towards rp in general. (which does get me in trouble sometimes with factions which is why I don't suggest it but I come from a different time in rp where it was always about the surprise and dealing with it.)

3. Basically start small and build up establish who you are and people will take notice. Don't give up if it interests you, if it doesn't find something new that does (I am speaking character or story wise).

4. You will always have those that will never want to interact with you or acknowledge you don't worry about those people move past them. You will find people trust me I have started over many times on boards where people didn't know me or remember or choose to forget me I always find people.

5. You will have disagreements and arguments with others most will be stupid over nothing just acknowledge them and move forward don't let them discourage you. If it is over something worse or something that makes you feel slighted or dejected remember breaks are always good for the mental health. But don't let them break you always come back and try more never give up if it's something you want it's worth pursuing and there is always people out there who will be interested in what you are doing even if they don't see it on your first try.

Also welcome and I hope to see you around.
