Hey there

Hi! I'm thinking of making a return to play by post roleplay. It's been a long time, but I started almost two decades ago with Harry Potter when I was a kid and still into that kind of thing. Besides PbP, the bulk of my roleplaying experience has come from MUDs, text-only MMOs that strictly enforce in character interactions at all times, but I've been away from this too for a long time. I still get a roleplaying itch that I haven't quite been able to scratch, and this looks like a good place to try to make a home. I've been reading through this board quite a bit and I have a few questions to get started.

Ultimately I'd like to make a force user, but I'd like to get my feet wet with a different character first. The character I had in mind was a protocol droid that is modified to be highly charismatic, and is used for diplomatic missions, politics, and perhaps some minor espionage. My first question is, does this character sound like it would make a good fit in this setting?

I had some ideas on how to implement this character. I was thinking of using the HK assassination droid as a base given its aptitude for working independently as a protocol droid. The designation I had in mind was HS, "Hunter Schmoozer" rather than HK for "Hunter Killer". I thought that would be kind of cute :) . My second question is, is this something I can play with without going through the Factory? I feel like there's a lot I could do if I went that route, but all I need to play with this character would be a specialized AI and maybe a coat of paint.

Looking forward to playing with you guys.

[member="Kanso"], First, Welcome to the site! Glad to have a new face around here.

Secondly, As long as the political character is not going to be used for fighting, I do not see a reason for you to be required. Its going to be story only purposes? No PVP combat? Nah. Not a necessity in my mind. Yes! Your character would actually be pretty well fit in. There are quite a few factions that would welcome having a political based character rather than "Snowflake Solider #907"

If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Hi [member="Garza"], thanks for the welcome. As for the character, if he gets into combat that means that something has gone horribly wrong. I was just going to outfit him with a blaster pistol in case negotiations become "aggressive negotiations."

Honestly, you could likely get away with just using one of the HK Models, where the droid brain has been corrupted to be unable to fight. And in doing so, is more along the lines of what you want.

Anyways, again, welcome to the site.

I am with [member="Garza"] shouldn't need to sub it as you aren't aiming to modify a standard HK unit.

However, sometimes subbing tech can be fun so you can create the exact look that you want. But welcome and have fun with it!

Thanks [member="Yuroic Xeraic"]. Yes, this is the conundrum. I have quite a few ideas, and I might be limited down the road if I decide to use a stock HK. I'll play with it some more.

I'd say, try your hand at playing your character out a bit. Find out what sort of things they get into in RP, then you'll be able to ask yourself what they are missing from their kit. Then, you'll have a clearer image of what you could want from a factory submission.

Thanks [member="Tathra Khaeus"].

I've drafted a bio if anyone is interested:

This droid was discovered aboard an ancient light freighter. The freighter itself was discovered in by chance, floating in a high orbit around Taris' star, and taken aboard a large salvage vessel. The freighter was in advanced state of disrepair, degraded over millennia by the presence of water and oxygen provided by the ship's life support, which had apparently continued to function for some time after the vessel's initial destruction. A single HK unit was the only salvageable technology recovered from the freighter.

Similarly to the vessel, this HK unit was ancient and derelict, and was initially to be scrapped for parts. An engineer serving aboard the salvage vessel claimed it out of curiosity, and attempted to restore it as a personal project. Unaware of its original function as an assassination droid, the engineer replaced the unit's dilapidated durasteel armor with a lighter carbo-plas construction, giving it a matte black and white finish. Finally, the engineer replaced the droid's damaged photoreceptors with an icy blue pair he pulled from a scrap bin.

After some time, the engineer was able to activate the refurbished droid. He named the unit HS-07, giving his best approximation of its original designation having only been able to decipher it partially. HS-07 would become affectionately known to the crew of the salvage ship as Hisham. Whether through damage, degradation or previous tampering, HS-07's assassination protocol and combat ability were lost. In their place, the droid had become remarkably personable and charismatic. He displayed great skill at mediation and negotiation, as well as an intelligent wit that few organics could match.

With no space for dead weight aboard a working vessel, HS-07 was put to work. He would often be sent out as an envoy for the salvage vessel, landing on planet after planet on the Outer Rim in order to negotiate prices and mediate disputes with junk merchants. HS-07 could communicate in a large number of alien dialects, albeit with a great deal of archaic language, making him invaluable to his new crew. The droid even settled conflict between crew members and became respected as an authority and in having the final word in arguments.

After some years of traveling with the salvage vessel, HS-07 was put up for sale. The company that owned the salvage vessel was being absorbed into a larger corporation, with many assets being sold off and personnel reassigned. HS-07 was marketed as a highly specialized droid, to be used as an aide to politicians and diplomats, noted for its ability to work independently.

Not a flight attendant... just a risk.
Welcome to CHAOS, [member="Kanso"]

I've interacted with a few similar concept AI type droids before and I don't believe there is any issues or restrictions as far as doing private stories. It's when you wish to play the map game and interact as an adversary to opposing factions in said map invasion or dom faction threads.

I believe you can create any type of droid you desire, and if it is WAY out there beyond the limits of what rules suggest, then just reserve him for private RPs that do not affect or have any direct affect on said map game. Just be sure to inform the other writer as to your droid's unique design and abilities.
Public threads of course will require your droid to keep it's abilities in lane (as per Ai droid rules I read somewhere some time ago) so as not to god mode....or create another approved droid (no limit to how many alts you create) to play in public/faction threads. :)

[member="Kanso"] - Welcome welcome! :D

And, I love the droid character idea. Very cool. Hope to see you around. Cheers!

Hey, thanks [member="Lynette Lykova"] [member="Kaden Farr"]

Spent most of the day making a siggy for my new character. I only have minor graphic design skills and zero artistic ability, so I thought I'd mess with 3D animation given that it was so come far and has such a low barrier to entry. It still turned out to be more work than I thought, given that I borrowed an existing HK-47 model. Here's what I have so far.

I ran it through an online converter just to show off quickly, so hopefully the final product will look a little better.

[member="Kyrel Ren"] One HK-47, and a handful of other HK models. But HS-07 is an entirely different beast ;)

Thanks for the welcome.
