[SIZE=10.5pt]In the wake of the attempt on her life which almost killed her, Tegaea Alcori came to realise that even a hold-out blaster wasn’t always at hand, and against certain enemies was less useful in any case. Thus, she came to the idea of a concealed single-shot boltgun. By necessity it would be extremely short ranged and hard to reload quickly, but in a crucial situation it could be a lifesaver.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=10.5pt]With this in mind, the end result was a small, slim silvery tube 6cm in length. The whole thing could be hung on a chain around the neck like a pendant, concealed in a bag or secret compartment or even made to look like something else entirely.[/SIZE]
[SIZE=10.5pt]Preventing the weapon going off prematurely was a key issue, and one resolved by implementing a coded arming procedure. In order to prime the weapon, one needs to perform a series of rotations like a safe. When done correctly a small firing stud will emerge, and pressing it will fire the weapon.[/SIZE]
[SIZE=10.5pt]Next, keeping the ammunition in the weapon long enough for it to be fired, but not enough to contain the energy was an issue. Finally a thin double layer was put as a cap over the weapon. The outer part was scratch resistant but soft plastic, whilst the inner part was thin but brittle metal designed to shatter and smash the outer shell to allow the round complete passage.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=10.5pt]Buckshot is perhaps the most versatile, spraying out forty shaped durasteel pellets like a shotgun round. At close range against an unarmoured enemy this is lethal, though not that good for the room décor![/SIZE]
[SIZE=10.5pt]Solid slugs fires a single bullet of shaped durasteel. This is more silent than the other two, and causes less collateral damage.[/SIZE]
[SIZE=10.5pt]Finally, the explosive bolt, which is a smaller version of the full boltgun’s round. As it has been slimmed down and is designed to be used at close range, the traditional shrapnel burst would not do. Instead, the bolt was engineered not unlike the weapon that fired it; to expend its explosive energy at its front into the target. Another innovation is that when the bolt is fired it pierces the shell, that impact arms the bolt so the next impact sets it off.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=10.5pt]As a weapon, the weaknesses are manifold. Firstly, the short barrel and lack of any sighting means the weapon is terribly inaccurate at anything more than a couple of metres. Added to this that the shots can cause injury at greater distances, but in random directions, and you have a weapon which can be quite dangerous to bystanders as well as the target.[/SIZE]
[SIZE=10.5pt]Second, reloading the weapon takes a minute or so, and so the user literally only has one shot. Even when reloaded, without the cap over the weapon’s end (which needs a replacement cap) it looks much more like a weapon.[/SIZE]
