- Can display holograms that project above a tattoo.
- Gives the impression of clothing or a mask with dynamic aspects.
- Wearer has full control of the tattoo's controls, including turning it on or off.
- Neon punk aesthetic makes the wearer truly unique.
- Hologram can be customized to a near-limitless extent, based only on the size and placement of the tattoo beneath.
- Could serve as a limited disguise.
- It serves almost no purpose besides aesthetics, anything it could display would also work with a normal holo-projector.
- May cause the wearer to stand out in an undesirable fashion, looking tacky at the best or downright dangerous at worst.
"Beauty is only skin-deep."
—a naïve proverb
If electro tattoos were the origins, and Digi-Ink was the evolution, then Holo-Ink marks the pinnacle of skin-deep body modifications. It fits the bright and colorful neon punk aesthetic that Darkwire is known throughout Denon —and perhaps the galaxy— for, making their Shadowrunners a cult envy of the planet's population.
Holo-Ink builds on Digi-Ink, embedding holoplastic onto the top layer of the tattoo to turn a being's body into a literal holoprojector. The actual projection may depend on the power level allowed, most bio-electric power cells can power holograms that hover a few millimeters above the skin, with the appearance of a sleeve or mask. Additional power cells or tapping directly into a cybernetic implant can grant the Holo-Ink the ability to project up to a meter beyond the tattoo.
Holo-Ink tattoos can project nearly anything a typical holoprojector can. Typically, wearers customize the output to their body and tastes, the resulting projection becomes an advanced form of body art. It's not uncommon for the Holo-Ink to be connected to a cybernetic implant or a wearable device to allow the user to control the projection on the go, some of the more popular Shadowrunners in club and rave scenes have Holo-Ink which responds to the music being played to turn the wearer into a one-being light show. Other Shadowrunners have experimented with holo projections for disguises or even an interface to control implants, armor or other worn devices without the aid of a screen.
The best technical minds of Darkwire safeguard the secrets of the Holo-Ink, but for those part of their shadowrunner ranks, or who happen to contract, or just have good contacts, Holo-Ink is the pinnacle of the neon culture vibe to get.
