SPECIAL FEATURES
STRENGTHS
  • Shielding to the Max: Utilizing components of a Lightshield, as well as a Xythan Force shield, the underbarrel attachment is able to very easily withstand a wide range of conventional weaponry, up to and including, Kinetic rounds, Blasters, Lightsabers, Hand Held Ionized weapons, and Elemental weapons such as flamethrowers, Cryoban throwers. Mostly due to the construction of a Lightshield which will acts akin to a lightsaber. With their ability deflect, and redirect energy based weaponry with ease. While typical of solid slugs causing molten metal to be flung at the user, this is also protected against with a secondary layer of Particle Shielding to prevent the wielder from being struck with the after effect of the slug being reduced to molten slag still moving at super, or even hypersonic speeds. Secondly, Xythan Force Shields, a special case of Molecular Shielding, can absorb energy based weaponry fire to provide more power to the shield, or can be routed to Blaster weapons to give them a bump in power. An equivalent of a standard blaster bolt to be up to twice as powerful. However, Slugthrower rifles can have their other electrical components boosted, or the shield have more power to defend against more.
  • Charge Barrel First: Using the shield can provide ample protection to the user. Due to the near weightlessness of the Light-Shield, its area that can protect the user can be extended up to 2 meters in Diameter. Allowing more protection to the user, as well as potentially those behind the user with relative ease. Due to the construction of the underbarrel attachment, A ring is mounted around the forward stock of the weapon. Acting as the emitter so that the barrel can be out from behind the shield and fire upon foes while the shield is activated. Without creating a "Double blind" Effect.
WEAKNESSES
  • You Get One: One cannot equip this with a Shotgun, grenade launcher, or other underbarrel attachment to the weapon. It acts as an underbarrel, thus takes up a spot on some modular weapons that could otherwise be used with more destructive force, in place of a shield. Due to the weight of the attachment as well, Its extremely recommended that the weapon be heavy and bulky enough to have it attached, as well as provide a secure connection to the weapon. Would really suck if it fell off when its activated.
  • Peeking a Little Too Much: During the construction of the underbarrel attachment, A floating ring was made to be fitted around a barrel, or the barrel housing so that the weapon's muzzle can be past the shielding unit in order to fire without creating a double blind effect. Due to this, the barrel can stick out a couple cms, to a full meter depending upon where it is placed on the weapon, as well as how long the weapon is. Larger weapons will typically have more of their barrel sticking out than those of a Shorter barrel more similar to a Short Barreled Rifle, or a Carbine.
  • Mind the Edge: Using a Light-shield, means it is functionally a Lightsaber. Having the same weaknesses of such. Rounds made of Phrik, Beskar, or are much more difficult to cut through will find and easier time passing through the shield, Or heaven forbid, someone makes a pure Cortosis Round that can short out the shield. Secondly, the shield can be shorted out when submerged in water. Rain is not a problem. However, dunking the rifle into your local pool, is not. Finally, as a version of a lightsaber, it can damage the user should they not be paying attention to where their rifle is at. Thus will take training to use effectively, and is limited to Elite Units
  • Grenada!: With the usage of a shield, it can easily defend against most weaponry. However, munitions meant to explode via hand held grenade, even something such as a EMP grenade, can be thrown behind the user, or be slid under the user in which case, the shield will not protect against. IF the grenade falls in front of the user, then they can still be protected due to the direction they are facing the shield. However, get it around the shield, and its worthless.
  • There is Always a Bigger Gun: Even if a Lightshield and the various weaponry it can defend against, it can't do it against weapons that are clearly much larger and meant to take out an area. Mortars, Bombs, Turbolasers, or even an Area of Effect EMP blast can all damage, or render the shield useless or not worth having.
DESCRIPTION
Of of the fabrication of a Underbarrel shielding unit which is provided to larger companies, or the wider range of infantry units, Locke & Key came to create something that was designed for a much stronger approach. Providing a better shielding unit, with a wider area, as well as providing the capability to absorb or redirect energy weapons, conventional to those of the battlefield. Even Needles, Slugs, or Ion weapons can be defended against with the introduction of Particle shielding set up as a secondary component. Providing ample protection against physical projectiles where a Light-Shield would typically fail.

During the creation process, one of the most notable downsides to using a Lightshield, was the "Double Blind" effect. Where upon activation, the user, nor the attacker could fire their weapon without hitting the shield. A few different variations of emitters were tried. One notable one left the top of the rifle open where it was "Dead space." However, from a much longer range, or a lucky shot could still pass through, and injure or kill the user. As such, a Ring mount was fabricated. One that would wrap around the barrel, or the housing of the barrel should the weapon have a floating barrel. One that would permit the weapons muzzle, or a larger portion of the barrel to stick out from the shield. All the while, creating a circular shield in front of the user that nearly completely protected them from oncoming fire.

This Ring was implemented with the idea that a rare and lucky shot would have to strike the barrel in order to damage anything remotely of the wearer when the shield is active. However, even if the weapon was damaged, the person would still be safe, and the shield can still be active. Thus providing the wielder time to get back to a fortified position, and potentially replace the barrel, or fix the weapon.

One of the major downsides to having a Light-shield, is that it acts akin to a lightsaber. Permitting a "cutting" due to the plasma-based superheating once an object has breached the electromagnetic field. Meaning, if the wielder was not paying attention, being mindful of where their arms were, as well as their legs, or allies, they could accidentally injure themselves, others, or damage property around them. Requiring those who were given the shield, to receive special training, and thus the project was limited to elite units, or specific individuals who were able to use it.
