Hotel Hell

Trandosha. Regardless of how [member="Ashla Marlar"] feels about the Trandoshans, Jessica knew that a dispute between the disgruntled workers of the 29-room Crown Nebula Hotel, most of whom were refugees from Thyferra and Utapau, and its management, was not going to end well. Understandably, with Hissket being busy dealing with the groundside industrial project that was the salvage plant, pushed by Jaster, the hotel staff, and ex-staff, couldn't just appeal to the municipal authorities. For some reason the Trandoshan managers let the situation fester to the point the Jedi pretty much had to intervene. I can't believe no one else even has any idea of what's going on. I guess even a boom of that nature can have its side effects, she thought. So she had a meeting done with the mostly non-Trandoshan employees of the boutique luxury hotel, but before it could even begin, she booked the conference room of the hotel and arranged for a meeting to be held at the behest of the Silver Jedi. Just before the meeting begins, she tells Ashla about the agenda of the day:

"Here's the agenda for today, Ashla. The items are, in order, mind trick, pyrokinesis and cryokinesis; if you still have any power left, electric judgment"

She thought the words were odd, and said "What do those things have to do with this Trandoshan hotel?" She was standing next to jessica in the conference room, which was currently empty aside from themselves. She was excited to learn, but why here?

"The first part is aimed at using the mind trick for interrogating people, while the second part of the lesson takes place in the hotel's kitchen. The mind trick is about using the Force to change the target's thought patterns. Be careful: sometimes you may accidentally ruin the target's life"

Yes, [member="Ashla Marlar"] was a little confused when Jessica brought her along in an attempt to resolve the dispute but Trandosha long had problems with low hotel availability at the luxury level. The Crown Nebula hotel was the only luxury hotel of its kind for a good chunk of the planet. By now the hotel's ex-employees, dominated by Vratix, Pau'ans and Utai, started to enter the conference room. Also, even though she had no experience whatsoever of the hotel industry, there was no other Jedi that could be remotely close to helping out in an industrial dispute in this specific industry. By the time all the invited staff and ex-staff checked in for this extraordinary meeting called by the Silver Jedi, Ashla was seated next to Jessica, while the attendees assumed that she was going to take the minutes of the meeting, as mandated in such meeting, while, in fact, it was the hotel's accountant that did the dirty (by Trandoshan standards) work. Jessica thus introduced herself at the very onset of the meeting, but doubted that a whole bunch of them would actually be talkative about what's wrong in this hotel. But sometimes, reasons not to voice a concern may hide more concerns or different ones.

"Welcome, employees and ex-employees of the Crown Nebula Hotel. I'm Jessica Med-Beq, from the Silver Jedi Order, which has expressed concern that the conflict in this hotel is going to disrupt an entire industry on Trandosha. Do you have any concerns to voice about how the hotel is run? Or alternatively, reasons not to voice those concerns?"

Ashla had her hood covering her head, and was scanning the faces of the room, thinking 'so, I'm a jedi, I should be able to sense emotions, right?' She experiments by looking at their faces and tries to feel any emotions that they are trying to hide. Not that she knows how to do this, but she does try. Her hood conceals where she is looking, so people won't react to her staring. She pays attention to how they react when Jessica asks the question she does. She really wanted to learn the jedi mind trick also, and she wondered to herself if that is why Jessica had brought her here

So some people categorized empathy as a separate power from Force-sense, but she does not. [member="Ashla Marlar"] would likely sense that some of the attendees are showing some fears. Look, Ashla, what you're about to do is to use the Force to get them to take out those fears, or take out any other mental inhibitions, and then get them to talk. It's usually when inhibitions due to dark-sided emotions are removed that the light side is most useful in performing the mind trick. It might look like hypnotism to some, however, she communicated to Ashla, using telepathy. It was quiet, too quiet perhaps, and no one seemed to voice any problems but, knowing that the Vratix may have had good reason not to trust Jedi as much as the Pau'ans or Utai, especially since there was only so much the Jedi on Thyferra could actually have done for saving the planet. Sure, the atmosphere was so tense at work, she could almost touch it. She could sense that there are lots of problems, but she couldn't tell with precision what it was other than it had to do with the management somehow.

"We can't help you if you're not cooperative with us. Now, I get that it is unusual to get such a thing to escalate to the point where Jedi intervention is required, but all I could even infer is that the management style is part of the problem" Jessica warned the employees in the conference room, signaling to Ashla that it is time to consider mind-tricking one of the employees to answer the questions.

She was slightly surprised to hear the voice, but quickly caught on, and discretely nodded at her. She then thought of how she was supposed to do the Jedi mind trick. She was worried doing it in front of everyone would cause others she was not doing it to to notice what she was doing. She turned to one that seemed particularly worried, and says to herself "here goes!" and speaks to the employee: "You will tell me what is wrong." She waves her hand under the table, trying to establish a connection.

"What did you ask for?" the neurotic Vratix cook asked Ashla, while rolling his eyes.

In fact, a poisonous work environment was pretty much a given, but just because a poisonous work environment can be inferred from Jessica's ability to read the emotions of the employees, doesn't mean one could actually know what's wrong without further digging; she knew better than to interfere in [member="Ashla Marlar"]'s attempt to mind-trick the most worried of the gang. Surface thoughts could only reveal so much - however, she could tell that they were mentally exhausted from working at that place. She realized everyone wanted a solution but nobody was willing to make the first step. As for what was happening in the mind of the neurotic Vratix, Ashla did some headway in lowering his resistance to the mind trick, but it wasn't quite enough for actually getting the answers they sought out of the fixes necessary for actually getting the mediation to be productive. But, perhaps if somebody could open up, maybe the others would do so afterward. Because, oftentimes, people feel isolated in their complaints, but when someone other than them have similar complaints to voice, they will voice it too.

She puffed a strand of hair off her face, and made a small pout that really wasn't noticeable. She looked at Jessica and made a look of "What am I supposed to do?!" She then faces towards the table and watches people. She really thinks attempting another mind trick might not go well.

"Perhaps attempting it on someone else could work better. It usually works best on weaker minds, and some races are immune to mind tricks, such as Epicanthix" Jessica whispered in [member="Ashla Marlar"]'s left ear.

Jessica did not sense that there was any Epicanthix or anyone, really, of any such race in the room. To be fair, the Vratix that was targeted by Ashla wasn't the weakest-brained of the gang. Perhaps the problem is that the owner or general manager may as well have brain-washed the staff; I definitely can't rule that out anymore, she thought, while realizing that maybe the strength of the first target's worries may as well be the sign that the target still had the courage and willpower to carry on at work until a solution could be found. That assumes, of course, that the Vratix was still an employee of the hotel. If, on the other hand, the Vratix no longer worked there, it might instead mean that the Vratix could be an agent of the Sith Empire. And she knew that espionage agents could be very imaginative as for what their cover could be. Proving, however, that an agent of the Sith Empire was indeed one was a much harder job than resolving the issue at the Crown Nebula hotel. Another possibility sprang up in her mind: it could also be that the target was actively clouding his mind while Ashla tried scanning him in the Force.
