World War 2 dogfights were amazing. Graceful and deadly. To call it an aerial ballet isn't a stretch honestly. Not to mention, as Valiens pointed out, they look great on film. I utilize them as the basis for my posts involving dogfighting, whether space or atmospheric. It is a bit strange to write out maneuvers that rely on conservation/management of energy as well as other variables to actually WORK in a setting where we are looking at thrust to weight ratios so far above what a modern fighter is capable of. Hundreds of times at the very least, likely even more than that. To me though, that is part of the fun of writing such things, you have more freedom and making it a good read is far easier using the film method rather than hard facts as the basis. While I personally utilize real world dogfighting as the basis, I have seen other writers who do not write out space combat equally well. There are times I enjoy reading their posts moreso than reading my own. Just depends on how much flair you can add while maintaining believability in the setting in the end.
