That, or you're allowed a starter ship too, kind of depends on how you want to do it. I believe anything under 400m does not require a dev thread, though if you want a custom ship or something special, Dev thread or Marketplace as the previous posters have said.

You're allowed to freely own a canon ship and equipment which makes sense for your character.
For instance you could start with a fighter, freighter or other ship a single person can crew.
You can also go to the Marketplace and purchase a ship as well.

alternately, if it doesnt make sense to start with a ship. You could talk to one of the writers and work something out. Depends really on what you have in mind.

I think, generally, people only complain if what you will into existence is ridiculous and/or overpowered.
So, give your single, unaffiliated lad a personal freighter of some description and not arse pull a super star destroyer capable of vaporising a solar system.
Or, do the RP grind and raise imaginary space bux to buy an imaginary space boat from an imaginary space man in an imaginary space market.
Whatever floats your space boat, really.
Oh, and common sense. Cannot forget that.
