“Lorinia,” Zaiya hummed to herself, sitting crossed legged in the observatory deck of the Jedi refugee ship inbound to the Inner Rim. The Lovalla teen was assisting with the refugee crisis by helping in providing helping hands wherever she could. She just started some training under Shan Pavond Shan Pavond for healing, but with the Core Worlds starting to feel the tension, it was decided that younglings will either go to the mobile temples or assist in safe, but necessary rehoming refugee work outside of the Core.

In this instance, the opportunity came up to work with a few refugees from Coruscant that would be settling on one of the unsettled areas of Lorinia. Zaiya never heard of it before, so the girl was reading up on it on her data pad. She sat cross legged, the vast glasteel screen reflecting the mottled cerulean tunnel of hyperspace.

While she was cast in the soft blue glow of hyperspace, there was no avoiding the way the Lovalla’s skin would shimmer and dance with a radiant pearly luminance. Everytime she learned something interesting as she read, the mottled spots and stripes over her exposed skin would ripple and pulse in a medley of citrine, rich amber, and bright glowing golden bioluminescence. She was a mesmerizing sight, catching more than a few double takes and stares that the Lovalla teen was more than used to by now.

Through the Force she could sense intrigue, apprehension, and delight. Some were curious; others wary. At least she didn’t sense anyone so far that seemed to be hostile.

“Lorinia is surrounded by a small planetary ring made up of asteroids and a few scattered moonlets; it has no tides to speak of…” Zaiya repeated, grabbing a dehydrated banana chip from her snack bag of dried fruit. Munching on it without much thought, she enjoyed reading along. If anyone wanted to approach and talk, Zaiya would welcome it.

For now, she wanted to learn more about Lorinia and --Whoa! There’s Dragon Turtles!!?!”

Jacob did not travel often, or at least he hadn't when he was with his grandfather and the Antarian Rangers. If it wasn't a dangerous mission maybe the young Solay would be allowed to go. Most of the time, however, the Rangers were out on missions Jacob could not go on. With the Jedi, they encouraged travel and arranged for work they young padawans could do. Helping some refugees resettle was something they could do, but it would also present a challenge enough to help them grow.

Lorinia was a world which had many wonders and promised to be a great location for those seeking sanctuary before the inevitable happened. The Dark Empire was going to attack, it was only a matter of time. For now, Jacob made sure he knew the mission brief inside and out. He usually studied alone, but the young teen needed a break. The one thing no one told him about space travel was how boring it could be.

He made his way to the observation deck to see the one thing that never ceased to amaze him, the stars. The way they streaked through traveling hyperspace was mesmerizing. It had a hypnotic quality to it, and Jacob found that what seems like a few minutes of looking at space could take up a couple hours of travel. There was only one thing that managed to distract him from what he had gone to the deck for.

The Lovalla.

She was reading something, and she did the markings on her skin changed color. He did not mean to stare, and hoped no one saw him, but the changing hues were not something he was used to. Jacob observed for what seemed like hours but was like just a few seconds. Where he would normally have hung back and remained a wallflower, Jacob knew the girl. They had met previously.

What was her name again? Ziva? Zava? Zaiya! It was Zaiya.

Okay, now he needed something clever to say. There were only a few seconds to think it up as he walked over. What was there he could say without sounding weird, but cooler than hi? Being a teenager was not easy.

"I still can't believe you change color like that. It's totally cool!"

Oh, being a teenager was also awkward. Jacob was not good at making friends.

Zaiya felt Jacob Solay Jacob Solay ‘s presence more than heard, the Lovalla teen now being able to discern the subtle nuances through the Force that allowed her to pick up on when a Force sensitive neared her. Had Jacob leaned to a greater extent to the light or dark side of the Force in his use, Zaiya would have been able to pick up on it, her color shifting reacting to the emotions given off through the Force.

As it was, all she picked up from Jacob didn’t need her particular ability to sense things; nope, his awkward stance and the way he shifted his weight before he spoke did plenty of that. Then came the rest. It was amusing.

"I still can't believe you change color like that. It's totally cool!"

The patterns over Zaiya’s skin would ripple with mild amusement in a kaleidoscopic display of mischievous mirth filled turquoises and contemplative curious ombres of rich amber to vibrant citrine hues. He did mean what he said, if an awkward first way of greeting her again, but that was okay. He meant it to be friendly and a compliment. Zaiya was getting better at getting a read of people through the Force. A passive method of sensing others intent that could eventually be used to discern truth from lies with practice.

“Hi Jacob,” Zaiya greeted him with a friendly expression, if albeit a slight coral tint to the mottled spots over her face in abashed delight at the compliment, setting down her datapad on top of her thigh.

“Haha… and yeah… my kind can’t help it. The color shifting a way for us to communicate with each other. Consider me a walking glowrod of emotions,” She explained, giving a self effacing joke before patting the floor beside her.

“Feel free to sit down! Just reading up on Lorinia. Whatcha up to?”

Zaiya seemed friendly, and maybe talkative enough to pull the more introverted teenager out of his shell. He could not imagine being designed biologically in such a way that his emotions would show in different hues and colors though. Granted if he was like that most of the time he would likely show one color, or maybe he wouldn’t. Just because he was stoic and seemed almost constantly calm on the outside did not mean he was that way on the inside. If anything, whatever colors gave away how nervous he was for saying something kinda dumb would be showing.

Thank the force he did not broadcast what he was feeling like that. It would make being a teenager even more challenging.

“A glowrod of emotions… got it.”

He joined his fellow padawan at her invitation. His back hit the wall first, and then he slid down until he sat with her on the floor with his legs out straight with one ankle crossed over the other. A small shrug was the first reply to her question. He was actually not up to much of anything anymore. Though, a shrug did not communicate much. Maybe color changing skin would be better. He could talk without having to talk. Jacob was not that much of a talker.

“I thought I would come watch the stars after memorizing the mission brief.”

Jacob did not mean to brag, and he did not really think he was. His grandfather had always placed high expectations on his soldiers and that meant memorizing mission briefs. He thought everyone did it that way. Maybe the Jedi did not want him to, but the young redhead committed it to his memory anyway. They did not tell him to, but they also did not tell him not to. It was certainly going to be a huge learning curve from the more militaristic upbringing he had to whatever it was the Jedi would offer.

He looked over to his partner for the mission.

“So… this planet has dragon turtles… think we will get to see any?”

Okay, he was trying to make conversation. Step one in making new friends.

Zaiya was impressed at Jacob Solay Jacob Solay . Her opal blue eyes would widen slightly and she’d give a crooked grin, “Whoa! You read the entire mission brief?”

He must be the studious type too, Zaiya mused only to then Blanche slightly in color, her rosy golden skin fading into a silver hue,” Wait am I supposed to also memorize it?”

She would have started talking about the Dragon turtles, but now she was worried she messed up on her first real mission and didn’t read up on it.

“Do I have to know all of it?”

"Oh, no, not at all," Jacob answered as his cheeks turned almost the same hue as his hair. "I just did because it's what my grandfather taught me to do."

Ugh, it seemed like what he considered a discipline now made him look like an overachiever. The last thing Jacob wanted to come across as was some brown nosing goody two shoes that was a shoe in for teacher's pet. He really hoped that is not what was happening here, and he desperately did not want Zaiya to think she had to memorize anything.

He put a reassuring hand on top of her as he looked her in the eye.

"I promise that wasn't the assignment," he said then took his hand away. "My mom's dad runs the Antarian Rangers. He's very strict, and requires all his soldiers to memorize the brief."

"You never know when technology will fail you," he did his best impression of his grandfather's brash and gravelly voice.

Jacob chuckled.

"The mission brief didn't say anything about the Dragon Turtles though, so it seems you know something about the planet that I don't."

This was why Jedi were often paired into teams. Each had their own strengths.

BP9MQYZ.png

Notable relief would wash over Zaiya’s expression as well as in the ripple of colors tones in a turquoise ombré over the delicate stripes and mottled spots over her face.

“Oh, good. For a second there I thought I had to do the same.” She explained with a broad grin, “I’m still very new to the Order so I don’t know much of what I’m supposed to do. Not have I taken any of the preliminary classes. All I’ve done is a bunch of reading and hanging out with my friends to find out.”

Zaiya brought her knees up, setting her data pad to the side. Bracing her elbows on her knees, she rested her chin on her cupped hands, curiousity painting her rosy golden skin into pattens of burnished amber and bright orange.

A giggle slipped past her lips at Jacob’s mimic. He was good.

“Antarian Rangers? What is that? Are they another division within the order?” Zaiya was happy to talk about Dragon Turtles, but she was always more interested to find out more about other people and their families. There were so many curious people and the Lovalla teen was very interested in Jacob Solay Jacob Solay .

Okay, so they weren’t going to talk about Dragon Turtles. Jacob shrugged. Zaiya seemed to be as interested in his history as he had been about her species. They were both new at least, which made this a much easier interaction than the spar where he had met her, Mahsa Mahsa , and Vera Noble Vera Noble . Jacob still had a small welt on his back from the burn he got from underestimating his opponent. He should have accounted for other forms, but he had not. That was his failure.

“The Antarian Rangers used to be a non-force user support military for the Silver Jedi. From what my mom tells me, that’s how she met my dad. My grandfather is their general, and he’s strict. He raised me to be a soldier.”

Jacob shrugged again. He paused long enough to reflect on the idea that what he said might sound completely foreign to most kids his age. How many did he know that were actually raised by a general in the hopes they would become a great soldier, or even their replacement someday. What Jacob did not say, nor would he ever, was how seared into his memory the look of disappointment was when Jacob turned out to be force sensitive.

The Antarian Rangers had a strict code.

“They don’t train force sensitives though. On the bright side though, I got to meet my dad when my grandpa figured it out.”

That was the subtle admission that his father had not raised him, nor that he ever really knew his father. Judah Lesan Jr. seemed like a nice enough person. There had to have been a lot of good qualities in the man for Jacob’s mother to like him. It had not mattered, however. Kait was never supposed to have fallen in love with him, and Jacob should have never been born. His mother broke their code by fraternizing with Judah. The general had done everything to keep them away from each other because of it, and when it turned out that Kaitlyn was pregnant, it was too late.

“So yeah… all that to say… I memorized the brief because it’s all I know to do. Which means we will make a great team, yeah? I mean you know about the planet, and I got the details of the brief in my head… we’ll be unstoppable!”

Teenage thinking!

BP9MQYZ.png
wHxnyHV.png

There was so much to unpack from what Jacob Solay Jacob Solay told her. Silver Jedi? Non force using rangers? His grandfather was a general?

Zaiya came from a background where all of this was new to her. None the less she was fascinated, the teen rotating her crossed legged position to face Jacob. While she didn’t need direct contact to pick up a bit of tension in regard to his grandfather, Zaiya wasn’t old enough or experienced enough to know what that meant.

She just heard that he at least got to meet his dad. Not that his force sensitivity now meant he couldn’t be with them.

The Lovalla teen giggled at the unstoppable comment, a flurry of joyful amused teal tones dancing over her rosy golden skin, adding,” oh I don’t know…I meant I guess I can identify things we find there. But it seems you are better trained then if these rangers are like military. What did they train you in?”

A pause.

“Also what are silver Jedi?” Would it be silly to ask if that meant they were silver?

Zaiya got excited again, and once again she changed color. Due to his limited social interactions with those his own age, the teenager found himself just blurting out what was on his mind.

“I love it when you do that.”

His cheeks suddenly turned the same color as his hair when he realized that might not have been the most appropriate thing to say. In part he could not help himself because her species was so new to him. Yes, she had already explained what it was, but that did not mean Jacob was suddenly used to it, or that it was not a mesmerizing trait.

“I’m sorry,” he quickly stated. “Not professional.”

That was his grandfather talking.

Silver Jedi. That was the subject change Jacob needed quickly, so he jumped to it before Zaiya could really answer.

“Before the Galactic Alliance there was the Silver Jedi Order. My other grandfather was a founding member when he was a knight. They were born during a time of relative peace and were determined to see many ancient Jedi sites restored. As war came they ventured into a lot of humanitarian efforts. That was why the Antarian Rangers were formed. They protected the Jedi, or aided them in what needed to be done.”

Jacob smiled.

“My mom was a Ranger. My dad was a Jedi. They were not supposed to fall in love, but they did. So here I am, even though… well… nevermind.”

He still did not know her well enough to finish that thought, and why dampen the spirit of a newly forming friendship with his baggage…

“What about you? Tell me about how you got here?

BP9MQYZ.png
wHxnyHV.png

“I love it when you do that.”

It didn’t take long for Zaiya to figure out by what Jacob Solay Jacob Solay meant by it. It was just as quick as her abashed reaction to it, heat flooding her face in a similiar manner to the boy only that instead, the mottled spots and stripes over her face turned a vibrant coral tone, with just a glint of teal and light blue in pleasure and amusement at how red Jacob became.

“I’m sorry,” he quickly stated. “Not professional.”

With an abashed but amused chuckle Zaiya shook her head, waving it off. “It’s okay. Thank you for the compliment. I know I stand out. It gets pretty bad once my bioluminescence kicks in when I’m feeling rather passionate about something, and even then the glow can be distracting, I know. I’m glad you like it, because I’m not able to be as vibrant or as pretty as other Lovalla. They can be very extraordinary with their color shifting.” That was just because she lost her social emotive bonds with her parents passing so young, dulling and muting her colors. She hoped that in time though, through the Force, perhaps she could eventually bond with others and become just as bright again.

It was so interesting to hear about a part of history that wasn't with the Alliance. For Zaiya, it was surreal. A lot of this seemed to have occurred well before her time, so it was interesting to hear aspects of it from others, but also how it affected them. Plus, it was super interesting to hear about these Antarian Rangers.

Well, until the color blended into an ombre of perplexed dove greys at what Jacob relayed next. He'd briefly mentioned it before, but now he emphasized it. That his parents were not supposed to be together.

“My mom was a Ranger. My dad was a Jedi. They were not supposed to fall in love, but they did. So here I am, even though… well… nevermind.”

Canting her head to the right, Zaiya drew her brows together, musing, "But why? Why were they not supposed to fall in love?" that seemed odd. Was it a rule?

“What about you? Tell me about how you got here?

"Oh, I met my best friend Aris Noble Aris Noble at the Bazarr on Liliac's drifter colony trade hub and that's when I found out that there was the Force. He managed to help me figure out that I could use it. It was super weird though, I'm still a bit confused by it all. But i found out that the Force can mimic my kind's bonds, so i wanted to learn more about them. Aris said i should research organizations and places to see where i want to learn more about the Force, so I ended up hanging out with him and meeting new friends. After a while -- and lots of questions later -- I decided to join!"

Well it seemed like talking about how she changed color was not a sore spot, or even the way he had given the compliment. It did bring about a different set of colors altogether, and part of the young Jedi wanted to keep seeing how many different shades he could elicit from just one conversation. That was the Lesan curiosity in him. His mother had always said his father’s side of the family would be the death of him, if her side did not do him in first.

It was ironic. Jacob’s parents had both led lives that could see him getting killed if he followed in their footsteps. Which he was.

Jacob’s jaw almost hit the floor when Zaiya said the rest of her species had more vibrant colors. He would have never guessed that what he saw was muted. Though he would have been rather morose if he knew why that was the case. Losing parents at any age was difficult, but at a young age, it was devastating.

Why?

Jacob almost laughed out loud had he not known the question was genuine. Honestly, other than it being some rule, Jacob never understood it either. His response was not going to be completely helpful, but he knew what his grandfather would say. He had heard the grizzled man say it too many times.

“A ranger is supposed to protect their Jedi and complete their mission. Falling in love for the one you are supposed to protect can cause a conflict of interest. What if you have to choose between the mission and saving the person you love? What if you really cannot do both? Eliminating personal entanglements eliminates the conflict.”

Jacob shrugged. It did not do that in the case of his parents. They just hid it for as long as they could once they decided to cross the line.

“So the choice was yours then, that’s great. I did not get one. It was to be a ranger or be a Jedi, and since the Rangers won’t train force sensitives… it was the Jedi. This is where my dad and my other grandfather are, so this is where I am.”

Duty. It was all the young boy knew.

BP9MQYZ.png
wHxnyHV.png
Loving someone would cause a conflict of interest? Eliminating personal entanglements eliminates the conflict? Ziaus dark brows drew together in contemplation as dark Amber rippled over the mottled spots over her face as she mused.

“That sounds so weird.” She didn’t mean it to be rude, just that it did sound weird, “being in that close company with someone, especially in such a position of trust to keep the other safe, is going to cause a bond to form regardless. It’s just a matter of time.”

That’s how social bonds worked. Being directly purposeful in spending time together, especially if assigned to such a pairing, was going to spark a connection.

“Why is falling in love forbidden? Sure one might do their best to keep their mate safe, but wouldn’t a friend do the same? At that point you could be great friends and still placed in the same predicament. Does that mean a new rule that you can’t be friends comes into place? At that point that’s ridiculous, because bonding and learning to trust someone requires empathic connection. It requires one to care. Otherwise, sure you might get missions completed, but at what cost? No one would trust the other to have their back and support… which in turn could very well put any mission at risk.”

Then Zaiya’s confusion grew even more when Jacob Solay Jacob Solay explained how he joined the Order and that he had no choice, compassion dawning over her expression as much as perplextion, “So just because you can use the Force you can’t become a ranger? Why? What makes such a big difference? Wouldn’t that mean it could help you become a better ranger by using your abilities?” These black and white absolutes sounded so strange to Zaiya.

Was the Jedi Order the same? No, Aris said his parents are married and both in the Jedi Order.

Jacob nodded. Zaiya said everything his mother had to him. They had been in close proximity and feelings developed. Often they were together on the ship, living on it as they went from mission to mission. Perhaps they would have never done anything about their love for each other had Kaitlyn not been attacked. Judah had stepped in to save her. He killed a Sith, his first kill, to protect her.

Love had been the reason Kaitlyn was still alive.

“It is weird, but it was the rule. Had it been allowed maybe I would have known my dad before I was ten.”

That slipped.

“Sorry… A Jedi should not be bitter.”

It was what Jacob told himself anyway. He let Zaiya ask her questions. Jacob really did not have a good answer so he just shrugged as he listened to her. She made valid points. It was a good thing the New Jedi Order did not forbid love or marriage, but Jacob wasn’t even sure he wanted that. Duty had been drilled into him from a young age.

Duty above all else.

The last question he did have answer for. Why couldn’t a force sensitive person be a ranger?

“Tradition, but beyond that, practice. The function is different. Any Ranger discovered to be force sensitive will be given to the Jedi for training because the galaxy would be a better place if the Force User knows how to use it.”

It was simple and practical.

“I’ve seen what happens when a powerful, raw, user cannot control their gift. That would not be a good thing among the Rangers. What if someone got killed by accident because of it… because it has happened.”

Jacob smiled softly.

“So, we send force sensitives to be Jedi. Rangers cannot teach others to use the force.”

BP9MQYZ.png
wHxnyHV.png

It dawned on Zaiya just how long Jacob Solay Jacob Solay had to wait then until he finally met his dad; he didn't meet him until he was ten?! That concept, for a Lovalla, was just mindblowing. Lovalla were such a tight knit family unit. Kyck, or children, were such a rare and lucky blessing, that most Lovalla couples had to struggle for years before they could even conceive one, much less, bring it to term, as their gestation times spanned three years. After that, the Lovalla offspring and its parents lived with each other, establishing deep emotional social bonds for decades, until the young Lovalla would be lucky enough to find a partner that would become their bonded mate.

To think that Jacob had been separated and did not get to know or learn or bond with his father for the first ten years of his life left a deep, resonating empathy for Zaiya, compassion and empathy radiating in the colorful burnished bronze color tones forming over her rosy golden skin.

“Sorry… A Jedi should not be bitter.”

Hearing him say that a Jedi should not be bitter only confused her more, the girl shaking her colorful head then reaching out to rest her hand over his. The touch would resonate with her compassion and empathy, the Lovalla teen adding,"Jacob... there is nothing wrong with feeling bitter. That's normal. You were not granted the opportunity and right to be able to be raised in your father's love and presence. That would make anyone feel sad, or bitter, or depressed. Wouldn't holding that emotion back and not processing it make it only worse?"

Zaiya had yet to get the class on that negative emotions could potentially fuel the Darkside, but for Zaiya as a Lovalla, emotions were something that they could not put aside; it was literally part of the way that they would communicate with each other. How a mate would be able to bond and build a symbiotic relationship where they'd be able to feel each others emotions, presence, and start to resonate and color shift the same colors over their skin at the same time, always in tune with the other.

She was knew, and had likely not heard the things Jacob had growing up. An Antarian Ranger was supposed to help ensure their Jedi would not succumb to the dark side of the force. That meant avoiding negative emotion, which could be triggered by losing a loved one. It was one reason of many that Jacob could give to avoid being bitter.

He shrugged, because she meant well.

“You’re right I suppose. Clearly my life so far has been an interesting one, but yours has too. I mean we both found our way to the Jedi for whatever reason.”

He grinned.

“I kinda suck at making friends, but we could be if you want?”

That was how kids did it, right? They just decided. Jacob had never really asked anyone to be friends. In a way Zaiya, Vera, and Mahsa, had already decided they would all be friends. At the least, the red haired teen was going to be included in their little group.

“So… this mission. Do you think the people will like their new home?”

BP9MQYZ.png
wHxnyHV.png
It was true they did have interesting backgrounds, but hearing Jacob Solay Jacob Solay say he wasn’t great at making friends brought a perplexed expression on Zaiya’s face, dice grey hues dying her mottled spots.

“You don’t suck at making friends, silly! All it takes is just being open to start conversations and learn about one another. Oh and eat together. Eating together is big,” Zaiya said empathically. It was very important for Lovalla.

“just keep doing what you are doing,” she told him with a dazzling smile, joyful teal tones rippling over her face in pretty luminescence.

Contemplative dark amber colors would replace them shortly at his question,” I don’t know. Going to a new place and leaving everything behind can be scary. Unknown. I can only hope we can help the transition well.”

“So, what’s our first mission once we land?”

Eating together. That thought made his stomach growl, loudly. It was the one downside of being a thirteen year old human. He was constantly hungry it seemed. His body was growing and changing, and that required a lot of calories. He wished he could be that pragmatic about it, but his stomach making such a loud noise in front of a pretty girl made his cheeks go bright red.

“Wow, that was embarrassing.”

There was no reason not to acknowledge it. It did provide the perfect opportunity to get their subject back on the mission at hand however. Zaiya wanted to know what the first part of their assignment was.

He smiled.

“When we land, the soldiers that are accompanying us will make sure the landing zone is safe. Most reports indicated there is no reason to be concerned about hostile inhabitants, but the wildlife here can be unpredictable.”

He motioned to the data pad Zaiya had been looking at.

“Like dragon turtles.”

They were not a concern per se. The turtles just served as an example that the world had exotic new life those dwelling on Coruscant might not be prepared for. Jacob and Zaiya were not likely ready for it, but at least the mission was supposed to be a rather safe one.

“Once we get the all clear, we are going to escort the refugees to the base camp.”

It sounded simple. Because Jacob was a soldier though, his mind had already tried to account for all the ways the mission could go wrong. He just was not going to tell Zaiya that just because something was supposed to be easy did not always mean it was.

“We should be done and back to the ship headed back to Coruscant before sunset.”

BP9MQYZ.png

Zaiya giggled at how Jacob Solay Jacob Solay 's stomach gave a growl, amusement dancing in light blue colors over her face. "It's okay. I have some dried fruit snacks if you like," She offered, twisting to grab the half eaten bag. "Or we can go to the mess hall and get something to eat?"

The Lovalla teen was happy either way.

As he detailed their first mission objective, he mentioned dragon turtles, which made her iridescent blue eyes shimmer with excitement. "I wonder if we will see one. From the details on my datapad, they are HUGE!"

"But it sounds simple. Survey the landing area to make sure it is safe from wild animals and dangers and get the refugees situated."
Not too shabby.

“Haha the mess hall, because I could go for a full on meal, and then maybe get some seconds.”

Jacob was eating a lot these days.

He was just as excited with the idea of seeing the Dragon Turtles as Zaiya was. Jacob couldn’t change color to express it, but he could smile big and let his eyes grow wide. There was an extra bounce to his step with the question as well. It had been what the whole conversation had started with.

“I hope so,” he said. “Something like that just seems cool, and I love seeing new things.”

Obviously because he was still in awe of the way her spots changed.

“Well that is why they let us come. The idea is to start us on something easy to get an idea of what it is like on the field… and I don’t know about you, but I don’t have a master yet… so it’s the easy stuff.”
