I Am (Not Quite) The Senate | The Sovereignty

politics is not a game; it is an earnest business...
Eadu, Senatory Hall, 8:00 am

Starting at 8 am was far too early for Nilia.

She had risen two whole hours earlier (So, in reality, 6 am was 'too early' for her) to bathe, eat, and prepare for their early assembly. Laborious, really... Starting at noon would be perfectly fine for everyone involved. But it seemed that the Archon didn't agree, and so it was an early start for them all.

Though, everything was moving very swiftly for her tastes anyhow. Crownings, speeches, and now Senate meetings to start moving on major decisions. Could they not slow down and take their time? And perhaps wiggle in a few more hours of rest while they were at it?

Unfortunately for her, Eyris, Nilia's overly-confident secretary, seemed delightfully awake and not in need of the precious sleep that she craved. The young Togruta fled Imperial space with the rest of the Sovereignty when they had first splintered, and now looked to do her civil service -- She had settled nicely into the role of Nilia's assistant, knowing when to speak and when she was better off listening. Much like an unexercised pet, however, Eyris was full of energy at all times and had been practically dancing around the Senator's apartment all morning. Relaying information about the day's topics and certain events Nilia had requested to be informed of, but at a volume that Nilia's morning headache violently disagreed with.

And now standing in the grand Sovereign Senate hall, glancing around at her fellows, it was clear the majority of them felt the same as Nilia. A few appeared bleary-eyed, huddled around in little packs as they drank essential caffeine and awaited the session to begin. Above them, an early-morning storm brewed with lightning arcing across occasionally sun-kissed clouds, the rain not yet falling, but knowing Eadu it was only a matter of time.

"Ma'am? I've got your docket. I think they'll start soon." Eyris' only flaw was that she was painfully short. Nilia was at an average height and being female she did tend to lean away from being tall, but her assistant was downright tiny. Her head only came up to Nilia's shoulders, her montrals and heeled boots adding a bit of height but not much. Which meant the Senator had to look down at her helper whenever they spoke, "Good. Thanks. You can join the other assistants now if you'd like."

Now it was only a matter of waiting for a certain Archon to grace the hall, and they could begin.

Lavidean had watched from a distance as all the senators and staff filed into the senate hall from far below. It was his sanctum, his safe haven, his observatory. From there, Lavidean could watch almost all things occurring on Eadu and in the immediate system, whether it was through sight, technology or the force, there was nothing that escaped Lavidean's watchful eye. From the smallest drop of rain, to a murder in a back alley, right down to the conversation between the good senator and her Togruta assistant, it was all knowledge that Lavidean could possess. He had called them all to the senate hall this early, but he would make them wait. A pointless test really in the eyes of many, but to Lavidean, a necessary one. He would watch them all, some held frustrations, irritation and even loathing for the Archon for such a call, others were eager to appear ready, bootlickers all the same. And those like Nilia were in between, they were the real leaders of Eadu, the ones he would use to mould the Sovereignty.

An hour passed of the senators sitting idle or irritated in their seats, waiting for things to begin. It was only after frustration was considerable that Lavidean took a step away from his position, towards the turbolift. The observatory itself sat deep beneath the senate hall, a place untouched by most other than in Lavidean's direct employ, few would ever know it existed, for even this turbolift was one of many secrets Lavidean had implemented. Stepping out of the turbolift into his office, he allowed it to close and walked calmly and contentedly through the halls towards the main hall. Staffers saw his lackadaisical stride but none would have dared to urge quickness in his movements.

He strode out into the main hall then, looking out over the crowds, frustration was replaced with relief, anticipation even, and in moments, his voice began to fill the halls. "You are here to discuss the future of the Sovereignty. Threats surround us and fill our ranks, and within is where we shall begin. Today, this senate will vote on allowing the Office of Naval Intelligence full access to public records for methods of national security."

A full hour?

Nilia exhaled a breath she had been holding for too long when she spotted the Archon's arrival, turning her head upwards to listen with an eagerness that betrayed how impatient she had truly become in those final few moments of waiting. She was normally quite the patient soul, but being forced to do nothing for too long had made her awfully restless.

As the Archon spoke the small packs of senators began to move, congealing around him to listen. Nilia stayed near the middle of the herd, barely able to see over a tall gentleman's shoulder, but it couldn't be helped. Perhaps I'll wear heels next time.

Her eyebrows rose at the proposition. Immediately, quiet discussion began to tear through the senators, a few appearing amenable while others looked on with distaste. Finally, a voice from the back of the crowd spoke up, an almost too-eager dissenter in the form of a younger male senator, "I'm sure ONI could perform their duties adequately without needing to jeopardize the liberties of our citizens, no?"

A few in the crowd nodded their agreement, the soft whispering beginning again. Nilia looked blasé on the issue though, simply leveling her gaze with the Archon. She briefly meet his eyes before averting to look at a tree, but it was clear she could suspect what was about to happen -- An entirely one-sided debate.

That poor senator.
