Unit Description: While technically referred to as a platoon, about three quarters of the approximately fifty man unit are support personal. These include Ranger R&D Engineers who maintain and test new and experimental technology and civilian corporate contractors. The combat section of the platoon numbers only a dozen sentients. These soldiers have been recruited from other Ranger units, from civilian mercenary outfits and in a couple of notable cases even from the various penitentiaries within Silver Order space.
While the nature of Icarus' platoons black ops work keeps them from having any specific unit insignia, when operating in larger theatres alongside other Ranger and Silver Jedi personnel, they are outfitted as a recon platoon for the Ranger 3rd Infantry. The singular mindset that keeps such a divisive group of individuals together is the desire to push the envelope with every mission and to test the limits of every situation, which is evidenced by their mantra "Take the third path."
This mantra comes from an old Lorrdian proverb that states: "Whenever you come to a fork in the road, always take the third path." What that means is that even if you feel that there are no good options in a given situation, there's always something you haven't tried or some way to move beyond that you just haven't thought of yet.
COMBAT INFORMATION:
Unit Size: Medium 50 (12 combatants)
Unit Availability: Unique
Unit Experience: Elite
Combat Function: Reconnaissance, Search and Destroy, Capture and Hold
Strengths:
- Unorthodox: The unit's very nature leads it's operators to tackle combat problems with "out of the box" thinking. This allows it to react to a variety of differing combat situations in ways that its foes likely will not expect.
- Experimental Equipment: As part of it's R&D mandate to field test new and experimental equipment, Icarus platoon has access to all of the newest state-of-the-art technology as it is acquired by the Silver Jedi.
- Pushing The Limit: Icarus platoon, by it's very nature, is full of free-thinkers who buck authority almost instinctively. While recognized by the brass as a necessity in the growing war-like state of the galaxy, it is a far from a celebrated unit. At times it is difficult to keep unit discipline even in theater and arguments between operators have been known to occur at disastrous and even dangerous moments while on mission.
- Untested Equipment: The flip-side to having access to all the new state-of-the-art combat tech, is that it is up to Icarus platoon to test and troubleshoot these items in the field. This means that the weapons they use can, and sometimes do, blow up right in their faces while in the middle of an engagement.
Following his promotion to Lieutenant after the battle of Myrkr, Beltran Rarr wrote a classified memorandum detailing his belief that the Silver Jedi's lack of meaningful technological advancement was hampering it's ability to make war. He suggested creating a unit that melded both field testing and black operations, which would give the brass an opportunity to troubleshoot new equipment in some of the most extreme environments possible while limiting the possibility of injury or death to only a few operators. To his surprise, Beltran was given authorization and a small budget to proceed. First, he assembled a support staff from both R&D and civilian private sector contractors. Then he assembled a smaller group of operators, drawing from "problem-cases" within the Antarian Rangers, as well as recruiting a few civilian private contractors and even a couple of criminals. In each case, he was looking for beings who thought "outside of the box" and brought unique perspectives to combat. At the time of this writing, the unit has yet to be tested in any meaningful battle but Lieutenant Rarr suspects that will change soon.
