Ill Tidings

Elaina took in a deep breath as she walked down the aisle, towards the man with whom she would leave the regal church with as husband and wife - the king and queen of new kingdom born from their union. Although this marriage was political in nature, both parties, weary from the threat of war that constantly loomed over their heads like the Sword of Damocles, were willing participants. If their marriage was what was necessary to finally form a lasting peace between their respective lands, it would have been well worth it.

With her heart pounding and her stomach twisting into knots, Elaina took her position next to her soon to be husband. Though she was the one to propose the idea of this union to the man and elated when he agreed to it, she could mot help but feel a little scared. Whether this crazy idea of her's could help usher in a more peaceful era or whether it was doomed to fail from the start, she did not know - all she could do was hope for the best.

As the ceremony began, Elaina stared at the Priest as he spoke, his voice sounding a little ominous to her ear. "If anyone has reasons why these two should not be wedded, speak now or forever hold your peace," the Priest said, pausing for a moment then moved on to the vows.

"I, Elaina de la Fontaine, descended from the Goddess of Life, Vie, take you, Atticus Laevinus, descended from the God of War, Letum, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part," she repeated after the Priest, her eyes locked onto Atticus' as she spoke her vows.

Mirroring his bride's actions, the Soliri king spoke his vows to his bride before the pair turned back to the Priest who declared them husband and wife then directed them to the table where two forms were to be signed, their marriage license and the document officially uniting the two kingdoms as one. Both as nervous as the other, the pair made their way up to the table together and the signing commenced.

Bent over the table with a heavy ornate pen in hand, Elaina began to sign her name on the marriage license as a projectile hit the Soliri king in the chest. "Atticus!" she cried in shock and crouched down to cradle the injured man, staining her ivory wedding dress with his warm crimson blood.

Hands trembling, she removed the man's tie and tore his dress shirt open to assess his wound. In order to achieve the peace she had so greatly desired since childhood, she must succeed or she would surely be accused of being a participant in a ploy to assassinate the Soliri king. "No," Elaina whispered. The projectile was embedded too close to the heart - this was above her abilities.

Unable to do anything and fearing for her own life, the Celesti Queen took advantage of the confusion to take her leave and return to her kingdom under the protection of the Celesti Holy Knights. She had no doubt that the dreaded war that had been quietly brewing was about to rear its ugly head.
