STRENGTHS
- Rapid Response Vessel (Advanced Saotome Drive). The Saotome Drive was rated as an extremely fast hyperdrive.
- Extra-dimensional Explorer (Advanced Saotome Drive). The Saotome Drive is a Paths capable engine that can attune to multiple dimensional frequencies, giving it the ability to access locations in Hyperspace, Otherspace, Waru's universe, Rozzum universe, dreamscape, Sub-hyperspace, Stranger realm, Netherworld of the Force, Netherworld of Unbeing, and Silver Dawn.
- Stellar Cartographer. The Intellec-class boasts exceptional sensor and sensor-processing capabilities.
- Force Sensitive pilot/navigator trained in Instinctive Astrogation with familiarity with Path Engines required to access the Paths capability of the Saotome Drive.
- Single Engine. Intellec-class had a single, large ion engine for main propulsion. Damage to this engine could render the ship incapable of sublight travel until repaired.
- Spin Up The Drive (Wait For It...). Because the Saotome Drive had substantial power requirements before it could engage, even when all pre-jump checks had been completed (navi-computer, frequency attunement, etc) there was a delay before the ship could jump while the drive built up the necessary energy reserves. A power failure during the "spin up" would require all pre-jump checks be re-run. In addition, the energy readings of the ship would spike, indicating to an enemy that the ship was preparing to jump away.
- Forced Shutdown. Because of the massive amounts of power that the Saotome Drive processed during a jump, it required a cooldown period between jumps for self-repair diagnostics. The time required for these cooldowns increased with time and distance. For this reason, the drive was incapable of hyperspace skipping.
- Pace Car. As a ship-of-the-line, the Intellec-class often served as an escort ship. This presented two challenges; the first being that the Intellec-class had to adjust and scale-back the speed of the hyperdrive to match that of the ship(s) they were escorting, and, the escort vessels then had to wait between jumps for the Intellec-class' Saotome Drive to cooldown/spin up before the group could jump again.
The Intellec-class was the ship-of-the-line for the free droid commune known as the Droid Cooperative. In keeping with the Cooperative's goal of furthering human-droid relations with respect to coexistance, the ships were designed to integrate both droid and organic crew members. This was also a necessity, as the Cooperative did not have a sufficient population of Type IV droids to provide tactical or security functions for the ships, being stretched thin by the needs of staffing the larger Unimatrix Zero. Because of this, the ship deviated from the design of the Binary-class or Unix-class ships by inclusion of traditional status monitors and computer terminals. Living quarters and a galley for food preparation were also included as part of anticipated diplomatic engagements and receptions.
Built around the powerful Saotome Drive developed by Krass Wyms , the primary mission of the Intellec-class was one of exploration. A mandate that expanded beyond a traditional understanding of the galaxy due to the drive's unique ability to access alternate planes of reality. The drive was also capable of accessing Paths, but only when under the control of a Force Sensitive with the proper training. However, because of this, the Cooperative reached out to Jedi enclaves when seeking to crew an exploratory mission. Twelve sensor arrays extended from the port side, both above and below the ship, performing both passive and active com-scan.
Like the Binary-class Star Fortress, the ships were controversial for possessing military-grade armaments on ships that were droid owned and operated. As with the prior criticisms, the droids expressed that such weapondry was in self-defense and necessary given the exploratory nature of the vessel's mission. Because of the lack of battle droids in the Cooperative, starfighters assigned to the Intellec-class tended to be a mix of Vultures and traditional, manned starfighters, though there was greater emphasis on support craft as the Intellec-class was not intended to fill a carrier role.
Three Intellec-class ships were funded for construction as of 900 ABY. DCS Intellec, DCS Solaris, and one yet-unnamed hull under construction.
