Hey guys, I have been bouncing this idea around in my head for awhile. I've looked at an old PbP system I dredged up recently because of another thread, and I've been slowly working on a Universal 6 system-and decided to blend some parts together and update the older system I worked on.
What I was thinking-is a sort of scoundrel/bounty hunter/criminal focused RP PbP with said system, set on Nar Shadda.
Mostly people would be hired on by a smaller Ganglord to hunt down, pirate, destroy and pillage one of his closest rivals by way of force, guile or espionage. This could also take us to other planets or even with how events go with players, could change the direction of the story intensely.
I'm not one for railroading, if I see a story branching off into a new one-I will let it go that way and not stop it. Creativity has always been the key to a long campaign in my years as a DM.
I'm a sucker for DM'd games. This sounds a lot like a watered-down version of the FATE system (which wasn't exactly something I was too thrilled about, but it's simple enough for freeform RP, I guess), so that's cool. I'mma try making a character and see how close I can get before I decide whether or not to, like, actually throw my chips into this pot.
Razelle Breuner - Ex-Commando Mercenary HP: 5
Traits Jill of All Trades: With a long and sordid military career behind her, Razelle has a ton of skills relevant to many areas. From security slicing and jury-rigging to sneaking up on people and running a con game, chances are there's something she can contribute to any given situation. Her extraordinary versatility and breadth of experience gives Razelle a +1 on ALL rolls.
Ambush Specialist: To be frank, Raz is trained to fight as dirty as possible. Her main martial art, K'tara, is specialized for disabling unaware targets, and she's a medaled sharpshooter with most weapons. When hitting an unaware target, Raz deals +1 damage.
Sherlock Scan: Raz's chronic hyperawareness makes it very easy for her to notice small details, take in a scene in a hurry, and spot ambushes. In fact, she has a hard time not doing that. She gains a +1 on all rolls to notice things. All the things.
Baby Hydra: We are not dealing with a human here. Razelle's gene therapy gives her superhuman healing capabilities. This doesn't exactly help her in combat, but with help or time, she can recover from some impressive wounds. +1 on all healing rolls against Razelle, and double all incoming healing.
Flaws Master of None: A breadth of training is extremely useful for someone who's used to going alone. However, Razelle is a specialized non-specialist. She can do many things, but never as well as someone who is focused on doing those things. Razelle receives a -2 penalty when her roll is contested by an enemy with a more focused trait. For example, in cybercombat with an enemy slicer who receives a +1 trait bonus to slicing rolls, Razelle would receive a -2 penalty on any contested slicing roll.
Information Overload: Hyperawareness is a two-way street. Raz can't turn her eyes and ears off, meaning that she's constantly being barraged with info about everyone around her, what they're doing, what they're carrying, how best to kill them...it makes focusing on one thing very difficult. -1 to defense rolls when faced with multiple attacks at once. -1 to tasks requiring concentration when in a crowded area.
Sensitive Eyes: Razelle's eye are sharp as hell. They're also particularly susceptible to bright flashes of light, i.e. from flashbangs or a ruptured neon line. -2 to all rolls for fifteen seconds after being exposed to oppressively violent light.
A Little Unstable: Let's not sugar-coat it. Raz is karking crazy. She's a paranoid sociopath with mild PTSD, and she finds it extremely difficult to relate to others on a level above "what can they do for me?" -1 to all social rolls not involving lying or manipulation.
BRW: 1 FIN: 1 WIT: 1
Equipment
BTI-CC13 blaster rifle
BTI-WWSR sniper rifle
BTI-WB heavy blaster pistol
x10 "plug n fire" power cells
x2 smoke grenades
x1 combat knife
x1 utility knife
x1 "go bag" full of random useful things, like a datapad, comlink, fusion cutter, rebreather...
The biggest flaw I've noticed is the concept of "faction traits." Especially in the underworld, many people have no faction whatsoever. People like Raz, who are entirely independent, are being robbed of a full set of traits.
EDIT: Sheet revised on reviewing the system. Since all rolls are "contested," needed to change my terminology.

Yeah, it originally was designed for a WoW forum board, and then reused for Mass Effect. Factions were a little more prevalent in the first world. Only once was it used in WH40K.
Also it does draw a lot from FATE. I played the core a lot on RPG.net and GURPs, so that flavor was hard to avoid. I may actually in the future run a GURPs or FATE game here if people are actually interested in it. But this works for those who want a little more RP lee way without a lot of number crunching.
I will save your character to a GDoc and see if we have enough people whom are interested. So far got two of y'all, which is almost a rounded out party. Since I won't be able to truly run this game until after Christmas, this was mostly for interest, and its awesome to find a fellow FATE player. *8bit Fistbump*
I assure you, I'm not a FATE player. I really don't like the system, to be honest. XD
But it's perfect for freeform RP, since it's remarkably simple, the trait system is versatile and open-ended, and so on. Or rather, it's as perfect for freeform as you can probably get. I'm not sure how many people will go for a full campaign on this board, since 99.9% of what we do is totally open-ended, and the draw is that there are no limits to what you can do.
That said, some people prefer having an external and neutral force to regulate competition. I'm one of those people. I do realize I'm in the minority, but it makes this idea appealing to me.
Awwwh. Well, glad you and I have somewhat the same POV on regulated competition. I don't mind backforth stuff in RP, but I've had my fair share of "Powergamers" in the RP world to quickly bow out if I get involved with one. Not saying anyone is here, I just prefer a system in place that allows players to be mostly on the same level. Few like losing out there, and taking a hit generally means "Losing". I'm gonna do my best to not go into a rant here. XD
I'm thinking if this takes off, I may make it a campaign, but its mostly to run a 1 Chapter crawl. So it won't drag on and on, unless people want to continue it.
I'd be up for doing this at some point on either of my characters. The plot you have going for this one would best fit this character. I have experience DMing D&D games for my friends, so this system should be really easy to get the hang of. Anyways, not sure if I'll be able to do anything today or tomorrow.
No need to rush, as I will be setting this up over the next week or so. Right now just getting some groundwork going on who will be up for it. And. *HIGHFIVE* DM's 4 Evah. I was mostly vetted in 3.5 XD
