[SIZE=9pt]While genetic manipulation in vitro, in a child before they are born, to genetically modify a fully grown adult is considerably more difficult. While chemicals and implants can provide an individual with a significant enhancement, Locke and Key’s new biological division wanted to approach this from the ground up. To this end, they went back to look at some of the nastiest customers nature had ever created, the retrovirus. A retrovirus is capable of infeting a cell and altering it, using the Virus’ DNA to alter the cell by having the RNA become a new double helix of DNA that would then spread forth, propagating throughout the host’s body. [SIZE=9pt]The scientists at Locke and Key realised that they could use this ability to completely rewrite the DNA of a host body from the ground up. Work on the Iounn Retro Virus was started. However, the engineers soon realised that what they had planned was too naive, no one virus could rewrite an entire body in the way they wanted. Instead, multiple viruses were needed for each type of tissue that would have to be affected. Furthermore, in order to prevent the virus from being rejected by antibodies and by the host, it would have to be specifically tailored to their DNA, making the entire process prohibitively expensive. [SIZE=9pt]Once a candidate for the retroviral treatment has been identified they undergo a full body genetic scan which is sent to a lab for analysis, and for the specific viruses to be tailored for the individual. Once the treatment is ready, the patient is put into a medically induced coma and their body is flooded with immune suppressants. From this point on they have to be kept in a sterile location in a properly equipped laboratory. Over the course of 6 months to a year, the individual in question has the various virus injected into their body one at a time. The doctors will track the progress of each retrovirus, waiting for it to fully transform it’s target cells before moving onto the next stage of the treatment. During this entire time, the patient is kept under a chemically induced coma since the process proved to be far too painful to allow an individual to remain awake through. [/SIZE]
[SIZE=9pt]The purpose of the retrovirus is not to transform an individual into an entirely new species, but rather to bring them to the pinnacle of their own. Their DNA is cleansed of any major or minor irregularities and rewritten to be the very best version of themselves, the perfect member of their species. Their body would naturally be superior to any athlete of a comparable build, their muscles more effective, their eyesight better. Individuals who have been through the treatment have greater stamina, their bodies proving to be more efficient, allowing them to maintain strenuous activity for longer, and to heal faster. However, it must be noted that their build remains the same as it was. The virus can’t create muscle or bone. It can just take the materials given to it and make it better, more efficient. [/SIZE]
