When the Ironsides broke ties with their Antarian Ranger roots, it was decided that they would be putting together their own armaments in the future rather than rely on some other company or faction for equipment. Designing each weapon themselves, thought was put into under which circumstances said weapon would be used, a high level of modularity, and achieving maximum firepower. Considering there were only twelve of them, that last part became especially crucial, hence all weapons used by the Ironsides pack a serious punch.
The Longbow was designed for long-range sniping with the philosophy that only one shot is needed to take down a target from across the battlefield. It was decided early on there would be very few bells and whistles regarding its design, with all of the development going into lethality and tried and true marksmanship, without the fancy targeting systems or add-ons of many modern sniper rifles. On a more personal note, Chief Ironside wanted the Longbow to be reminiscent of his mother's old rifle from her days as a Republic special agent whose aim was unsurpassed.
