CONTENT INFORMATION
Compared to other species of galactic threat, the Abersyn are perhaps some of the least known. They were known to leave destruction and death in the wake of an infestation, this much is true and this is why most of the galaxy kill and exterminate the parasites like an infection. It makes study to understand what drives them if anything harder, let alone how long they have been around in the galaxy. They feed on the brain stems and burrow deep into the bodies using them like puppets when they have a host.... and they are tough like tartigrade type creatures and to kill them you needed a strong plasma furnace but vents could be used. The danger they posed to many caused most species and civilizations to exterminate them and ban any possession of them across the galaxy.
There are few reports of them appearing. A cache of them were found by Chelli Lona Aphra when she attended the University of Bar'leth. Her doctorate was given and the empire destroyed the symbiotes but that really is the closest we have been able to find in regard to ones in stasis and implies the possible dangers. If they are able to sleep for periods of time awakening it could lead to there being colonies sleeping on worlds that are a time bomb. Scanners to search for them would require more then trace organic material that has been preserved in carbonite for preservation purposes. No intact specimens were kept and the name Aphra wouldn't be avoided in reference to the parasite as she was involved in a second incident it seems but we have better records thanks to Grandmaster Skywalker.
The second major incident of them coming up was filed by Jedi Grandmaster Luke Skywalker and involves himself, Doctor Aphra, as well as others fighting against the mysterious queen of Ktath'atn. It wasn't know what or who the queen was but when Aphra took him there they learned the queen was infected by a symbiote and it had after enough time taken over her body controlling the surrounding others. A small colony was suspected but eventually it was discovered to be large and only contained by the lack of people on the world. Visitors were usually coming to give gifts and some would but not enough to draw attention used to add to the numbers. One note from the grandmaster is that the queen didn't infect wookiees or try with force users who had a strong will.
The stronger the will of the one infected they could force themselves into the position of queen with control over the hive mind itself and that could make it dangerous. The situation was stopped after a wookiee was infected and went berserk against them driving the hive into a frenzy. I myself have one of the few encounters with them on record. There wasn't much as me and another jedi found the remains of the colony on Ktath'atn and with it we worked to find out some more. Investigating possible ways to remove the symbiote without killing the host and working on the theory to try and preserve the mind of the victim through the force or recover it... It was not perfect but we managed to help save some who had been captured.
We have worked from that knowledge to develop countermeasures and means to circumvent the influence that the parasites can create in a being. The Abersyn Class hybrid Biot is designed to if the species is encountered override the influence of the queen, putting the victims into a berserk state long enough to attack each other trying to create a new queen. It isn't perfect and for the hosts we might not be able to do much... it seems detaching them is based on how long they have been infected as ones with the parasite just attached have not had their brain stems fully destroyed and could be saved if acted upon quickly enough. The biot is able to remove the parasite with precision and doesn't have the risk of being infected as it has no organic brain to destroy.
