- Description: Scruffy-looking compared to most other Ranger units as is befitting of their grizzly task of hunting down and slaying monsters, members of Jaeger Battalion can be identified by the emblem they all wear depicting a crimson arrow and bow upon a black background. All soldiers are encouraged to customize their equipment to their liking in the form of personal accoutrements and trinkets, to remind them what they're fighting for. - Combat Function: As a heavy assault infantry unit, Jaegers are tasked with bringing down the worst monstrosities the Bryn can field with ruthless efficiency. They are also used to punch through enemy lines and overpower strongholds, thriving in close range firefights where shotguns and melee weapons are used to devastating effect. They regularly employ bayonet charges to rush enemy positions, where their chainsaws tear them to pieces. The 88th Battalion is unique for their use of harpoon launchers with which they may take down larger creatures, even flying units. Each soldier is equipped with jump jets with which they may leap on top of the massive beasts of the Bryn'adûl and deliver death where they can't so easily reach them.
- Highly aggressive tactics, specialised in taking down large monsters.
- Effective shock troops, used to break through frontlines.
- Utilizes a wide array of hard-hitting ranged and brutal melee weapons.
- No support weapons, relies on support battalions.
- Fewer in number than other battalions.
- Lacking in defensive capabilities.
The Bryn'adûl had struck deep into Concord space when they came for Sev Tok; a poor, barren world with no strategic value whatsoever. Because of recent advances, SJC stationed all their most experienced troops along the borders in order to prevent another breakthrough. They hadn't expected one lone Bryn vessel to slip past their considerable defenses. This ship was the Epitaph, helmed by the Titan himself, Tathra Khaeus.
Sev Tok was poorly defended, ill-prepared for the stresses of warfare on a galactic scale. A largely desolate and rocky planet with little natural resources, nobody expected the Bryn to target it in their next offensive. Not counting the many small communities roaming the deserts and valleys, there only existed one major settlement on Sev Tok. The City of Anvil; a most ambitious piece of architecture consisting of seven city levels, each built into the mountainside against which it rested. A million people dwelled there, forming the semblance of a government with laws and traditions.
With the arrival of Concord troops, their normal day struggles were replaced with fear of the unknown. They were instructed to take their belongings and make for the mines deep inside the mountain for their own protection. Anyone with a blaster was asked to man the high walls, joining their local militia that up until that point had never had to face an attacking army before in their lives. Their experience only went as far as a few bands of raiders looking to cause trouble to the townsfolk.
The vast majority of Rangers deployed to Sev Tok that day was not very experienced either, most of them being reservists or fresh off boot camp. Only a few units and companies had the considerable experience with facing the Bryn'adûl hordes, including the venerable Paladin Company under Colonel Beltran Rarr. Another unit, albeit small, were the Storm-Crows, commanded by Lieutenant Thirdas Heavenshield.
Because of the lack of officers on site, Thirdas had been the first one there and thus was put in command of the city's defenses. A position and responsibility he had not sought, but one he felt compelled to accept. He organised the troops still coming in, stationing them along the walls and established checkpoints along major streets. They expected an assault on the high walls, as had been done time and time again.
The Bryn had no intention to besiege anything.
Their lone vessel crashed into the city, and from it there poured one monstrosity after the other. A desperate struggle ensued between the ill-prepared defenders and the Bryn'adûl forces, even as allies started to appear in orbit after answering to a general distress call sounded by Thirdas himself. Forces of all allegiances and creeds would appear one after the other, but all of them fought as one against the Titan's inexhaustible army. Many sacrifices were made.
In the aftermath of the Battle of Anvil, Lieutenant Heavenshield received a promotion to major by Ranger Command, and the surviving local defenders even received an honorary award for their heroic last stand. Major Heavenshield used his new rank and prestige to put together a new fighting unit out of the survivors of Anvil, uniting the scattered and broken companies into a battalion of his own. All these men had gone through Anvil together, and the harrowing experience bound them together in a way only a soldier would understand.
With a clear hatred for the Bryn, this new battalion assumed the role of a heavy assault unit, using battle tactics far more aggressive than those of their fellow Rangers. With Thirdas as their Battalion Commander, many such tactics and traditions were drawn from his homeworld of Midvinter. The battalion was named Jaeger, after the Valkyri word for "hunter", and their insignia became a crimson arrow and bow against a black field, meant to depict the weapon of choice of the Valkyri Goddess of the Hunt, Éar.
Their armor was also painted black and red, along with re-occurring motifs in the form of skulls and crossbones worn to instill a sense of fear and let anyone know that these were monster hunters and beast-slayers. Jaeger Battalion was, half-mockingly and half-respectfully, nicknamed the "Bloody 88th" by their brothers in arms, after the state in which the survivors would return after a mission: Covered in the blood of their enemies.
Anvil became their warcry and slogan, often reciting the words "We March For Anvil!" and "Remember Anvil!" as they march into battle.
