Jaena was born to a mid-tier Echani clan with a millenia-long history of military service, and with a strong interest in the ancient rivalry between their Culture and the Mandalorians. From a young age, she was trained in a variety of martial arts, starting with the traditional combat of her people - giving her a preternatural ability to read an opponent's intentions through subtle shifts in movement.
Prologue
Growing up, she was introduced to Teras Kasi, Stava, Broken Gate, and K'Tara, learning each of these styles and studying the cultures that produced them, as she also learned to incorporate her own specialties and styles into the battle, soon becoming known among her clan as a skilled martial artist in her own right.
At 14 she engaged in her coming of age - a series of matches against several family members, with little rest in between. Despite being pushed to her limits, and losing several, namely the one to her Mother, the Matriarch, her ability to survive and indeed thrive in most proved most impressive to the Clan, and she was welcomed in her own right.
Impressed by her ability, Jaena was sent to train under a local master of Vel'Shen - a discipline designed specifically to fight against opponents with heavier armor or superior weaponry, such as her ancestral rivals or many of the great militaries in the Galaxy. She was acclaimed by her masters for her calm, analytical approach, while still having the ability to aggressively overwhelm an opponent when necessary.
Seeking to use her skills for the good of the galaxy, Jaena attained a spot in one of the GA's many military academies, passing grueling physical, mental, and psychological tests and earning her place among the Alliance's officers. Still vaunted for her wide range of skills in hand-to-hand combat, she was assigned to command an elite reconnaissance troop, known for their rough edges, and given the task of turning them into a fighting machine worthy of the 76th.
