OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION

Most of our ships put down at the main spaceport. A few broke off and pressed on alone. A few others probably won't take off again for a while. Jaibrek is the first real settled, appealing world on the route since we passed Skye. The markets have a hundred kinds of local produce none of us ever saw before. I know for a fact that some of us are carrying stasis chambers for things just like this.

Meanwhile, I've just touched down somewhere a ways off the path; some mostly uninhabited place, aside from a few small rural communities here and there. Nice and calm. Didn't always seem to be that way, though. Just two or three kilometers off from where landed is a massive old battleship. Not really sure the make, but it looks more like something from my side of the void, not something native to Firefist. Ancient, too, judging by how much it's sunken down, and the level of erosion around the gouge it made when it came crashing.

Blessed are the smugglers and traders,
I thank them for this meal and this drink...
It has been so long without the things I love

LOCATION INFORMATION
  • Capital City: Pejjane, population 250,000.
  • Planetary Features:
    • Primarily rural and smallholding frontier. Homesteading and prospecting are eagerly encouraged by the local administration.
    • Huge mesas and buttes of dark rock dot the whole world, posing challenges for large-scale farming and mining.
  • Major Locations:
    • Pejjane is home to a thriving interspecies bazaar market that sees visitors and goods from Firefist, the Prime Galaxy, and beyond. While the Pejjane Bazaar isn't among the Nagai worlds' wealthiest trade hubs, it is well-known in the region and a major rest stop on the Nagai Trade Spine. Pejjane is the best option for repair and resupply in several systems, and one of the farthest places where ships from the Prime Galaxy could expect to find components that fit the galactic standard tech base.
    • Outside Pejjane is a truly ancient, off-kilter sandstone temple of unknown origins, currently inhabited by Nagai telepaths and warrior-sages. Their leader, as of 902 ABY, is a Master-level telepath, a Nagai woman named Sonere. This is among the most notable enclaves of Force practitioners in Nagai space. The Nagai temple is well respected locally for its charitable or compensated services, including dispute resolution, mental health support, addiction treatment, and even interrogation. The temple enclave — arcane but respectable — is not against sharing its skills with supplicants who don't take it for granted.
    • A huge, corroded New Republic expeditionary ship sits half-buried in the grasslands. It has been well picked over during the last eight hundreds years, but still holds its share of secrets.
    • In one of the rural regions around Pejjane, a short flight or long drive from the market or the enclave, is a low-profile grassland homestead constructed by Velok Brokentusk Velok Brokentusk and Lily Rhodes Lily Rhodes around 900 ABY.

POPULATION
  • Native Species: No native sapient species. Extensive ecosystem, primarily grassland.
  • Immigrated Species: Nagai
  • Population: Sparse
  • Demographics: 80% Nagai, 10% other Firefist species (Tof, Faruun, Maccabree, Sharuka), 10% assorted others.
  • Primary Languages: Nagaian, Basic
  • Culture: Pragmatic frontier, honor/face, knife culture, chatty, haggling, expressive, highly individualistic.

GOVERNMENT & ECONOMY
  • Government: Planetary administrator appointed by offworld Nagai authorities and advised by local consultation. Towns and villages led by councils and/or mayors. Many small independent settlements.
  • Affiliation: Nagai space
  • Wealth: Medium — a successful farming settlement and local trade hub in the Unknown Regions.
  • Stability: Medium — just enough structural stability and enforcement to keep the constant struggle to get by and get ahead from boiling over at an individual level.
  • Freedom & Oppression: Variable issue by issue and case by case — even decades since settlement, Jaibrek is still finding its feet and setting norms, both rurally and in the market/port, and the largely-autonomous planetary administrator turns over every few years. All this contributes to uncertainty, resentment, petty corruption, and erratic pockets of libertarian, anarchist, or authoritarian groups. Jaibrek is politically heterogeneous. Community league meetings are traditionally incendiary.

MILITARY & TECHNOLOGY
  • Military:
    • A small number of Nagai patrol boats and starfighters for defense and constabulary functions ranging as far as Jaibrek high orbit. Most are not outfitted with hyperdrives.
    • A small number of hyperspace-capable courier/scout craft.
    • Basic surface and air patrol forces, sufficient to repel raider landings.
  • Technology: The equivalent of Galactic Standard, but with a Nagai tech base.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The Nagai discovered and settled this uninhabited planet many centuries ago, but the Gulag Virus wiped it out entirely. It was resettled by small numbers of prospectors during the Dark Age. In the 850s, the re-charting and stabilization of the Nagai Trade Spine made Jaibrek an important rest stop and crossroads, as well as a hub for local interests to secure modern hyperdrive technology.

The market at Pejjane thrived, and Nagai authorities encouraged settlement. By the turn of the century, a significant fraction of Jaibrek's arable land, freshwater rights, and promising mineral deposits had been claimed in one way or another, with room to grow. However, the challenge of working between densely placed buttes and mesas, the lack of strong infrastructure and services, the planet's tendency to aridity, and its relative remoteness from Nagi were all limiting factors to broader settlement.
