PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Jaina is a - by the standards of her species - relatively average looking Human female in her early twenties.
She is of a healthy build and a trained physique, with puffy, frizzly black hair reaching down to her chin, ember eyes and medium-tan skin.

She wears (seemingly) randomly assembled pieces of armour and gear from multiple worlds she has visited throughout her ‘career’ so far, and what looks like ragtag provisionals is actually more of a memory lane of trinkets Jaina holds dear.

PERSONALITY AND BELIEFS

Despite her relatively young age Jaina is a level-headed and laid back personality. She matured early because she had to.
With little stability throughout her formative years, she grew up to seize every day, take every little victory and snatch what was needed to survive, but also to never take anything for granted.
With an attentive and open mind being her sharpest tool, Jaina has an easy time interacting and cooperating with most people around her, understanding and memorising their needs as well as blending into the background if needed.

STRENGTHS

─── INTELLIGENCE

Jaina is a particularly perceptive and smart person - for the most parts out of sheer necessity -, and she has an easy time learning new skills such as languages, coordinates, patterns and preferences, has a quick time noticing any type of irregularities and slide into new assignments and roles with relative ease (within the limits of physics and reason of course).

─── CUNNING
While intelligent and versed in combat, Jaina’s most relied on survival skills are her wit, her cunning and her instinct to seize opportunity, Whether this is cheating her way out of trouble, making a silver tongued exit or knowing her surroundings better than her opponent/s. She understands that neither brute force- nor intellect alone can consistently keep you afloat, and that a skirmish avoided or an enemy allied with can be every bit of a step to victory than plain and simple defeat.

─── CHARISMA
Due to her genuine, authentic personality, self-confidence and intelligence, Jaina more often than not is a generally liked peer by most, and she has internalised that fact enough to find ways to comfort and charm her surrounding associates. While often interacting in a playful, teasing and even flirtatious manner, she still treats everyone as true equal and takes their concerns seriously, which (unlike the rest of her family) makes her a somewhat well-liked participant in all social situations.

WEAKNESSES

─── STUBBORNNESS

Despite her gifts and assets, Jaina prefers to do things her way if possible. Not necessarily because it is the easiest, but what she is most comfortable with, and she LOVES residing in her own comfort zones unless metaphorically flushed out by circumstance.

─── CYNICISM
She has seen things, done things, and is certainly aware of even more things to come.
While her otherwise chipper and charming attitude might overshadow it, Jaina is a cynical, bitter and - on occasion - angry soul, and while it does not necessarily influence most of her actions per say, her words clearly reflect that mindset to those attentive enough - even in not so optimal circumstances.
In the rare case of her openly disliking someone (which is usually for relatively valid reasons), she will be sure to let them know and have little to no genuinely warm words for them.

─── SPACE-SICKNESS
Whether due to a rare medical condition, or as part of psychosomatic effects, Jaina gets space-sick. A lot. As comfortable and versatile as she is on planets with most (reasonably compatible) environmental conditions, she is of little use in space, and especially throughout hyperspace, unless she is sufficiently medicated.
She will require regular medication and a quarter without windows, otherwise she may or may not blow chunks across your fancy ship.

HISTORY

Jaina’s story began roughly 20 years ago on a small, impoverished and crime-ridden backwater planetoid named Sóro in the Outer Rim. Little is known about her original birth family other than that they supposedly were forced to sell their child into slavery, and while the ‘forced to’ part is indeed highly speculative, it was the only remnants of motivation Jaina was able to gather from what little documents she was able to extract.

Unbeknownst to these events, the first few years of her life young Jaina and an assortment of other slave children were trained, sold and shipped from place to place, neither of them able to form bonds long enough to count as friendships, yet - to Jaina personally - thorough enough to pick up whatever glimpse of languages and tales of other worlds and places she could get.

At an early age already, the child’s perceptiveness and intelligence proved relatively life-saving and protected her from being sold into the most dangerous or degrading tasks. Instead she was purchased by a wealthy Kuati Duke, who periodically bought and trained a batch of young, interesting [to be-] beautiful women to become his personal ‘entertainers’.
From the age of ten Jaina was trained in dancing, singing, social- and distractive conversation, and while she proved to be a quick learner, she loathed every minute of it.
She hated having to conform; hated being gentle or charming, and overall accumulated more time being punished, isolated or insulted than most of the other slave girls combined.
The only company she actually enjoyed was that of the servant droids, whom she had a substantially easier time befriending than most humans around.
Had it initially been one of many punishment sessions to have her clean said droids - the lowest of the low 'non-sentients' to be found -, she eventually began to consciously calculate her misdemeanours to accumulate even more punishment and spent even more time doing the one thing that brought her the closest thing to joy.

Thanks to her new peers she quickly picked up more new languages, such as Binary, Bocce, Huttese or Ryl, but also an influx of information about the world outside of the moon she ‘resided’ on, and while clearly told from a Droid’s detached point of view, one aspect that particularly stuck with Jaina was the concept of past synthetic uprisings, and it’s (to her) revolutionary new thought: If even droids could revolt against their owners, so could people…

Over the next months, perhaps even a year, Jaina began to carefully wage her options, probe her peer slave girls and their likelihood of not backstabbing her in what she planned to do, and carefully made plans for a quiet but deadly solution to her captivity…
With three other slaves she considered loyal enough for this to work, Jaina eventually prepared her move at the height of the Solstice festivity: With poisoned beverages for her assorted masters, strategic distraction of key security personnel and a conveniently instigated sensor blackout at the height of the party granting her and her peers a - relatively - safe passage to the nearby parked ships.
What could have worked however monumentally backfired: With one of the three peers revealing their plans ridden by guilt and fear, the rest had to act fast, and what should have been a minimal casualty exit strategy turned into a bloodbath culminating in Jaina and her only surviving accomplice at that time stabbing their old Master with his own dagger.

By the skin of her teeth making her way out of her old master’s palace, Jaina lost even her last accomplice to security Droids, before she could sneak aboard a nearby starship undetected, and as the ship took off into uncertain new space a few hours later, Jaina made her next, sudden and shocking realisation:
While she had managed to gain her relative freedom in theory, she had no allies, nowhere to go and no safety, protection whatsoever.
She was a sole thirteen year old with blood on her hands and an uncertain future…

She managed to stay hidden aboard the ship for three days, slicing into the internal sensors and masking her life signs well enough to stay below the alarm threshold and forcing herself through hunger, thirst and unbearable space sickness.
Only ever on day four, upon coming out of her vent to scavenge for something to eat she was spotted and detained by one of the crewmembers.
Her new ‘hosts’ was a crew of travelling Mandalorian mercenaries, and while anything but thrilled about their stowaway and the potential trouble to follow in her waking, the ship’s CO negotiated Jaina into cooperation:
If she were to breathe the Kara’ad’s air and eat their food, she better make herself useful like everyone else aboard…
And while Jaina originally already feared, she had landed herself in yet another contractual ownership, the crew actually treated her with respect and dignity.

Offering her expertise with languages, computer systems and droids in exchange for a bed and a warm meal, she gradually - without even realising at first - joined the crew and became one of the Kara’ade.
Learning their language, honing her skills in combat and refining her expertise with computers, Jaina soon became more and more of a valuable- and eventually fully fledged and respected crewmember, and at the age of fifteen was officially adopted by the ship's Pilot Kara'ade Kara'ade according to Mandaliorian customs.

Throughout the upcoming years, she solidified her position as the ‘scientific way’ of most operations, and her wide understanding of alien languages and customs more often than not landed her in the position of a representative and/or negotiator between the Mandalorians and their aruetii customers/friends/foes.

At the age of twenty she officially adopted her new mother’s family name of Rhys, but also began to spread her focus outward; wage more learning- and career opportunities and landed herself on multiple expeditions into the Unknown Regions and Wild Space.
Together with her Droid Jinju, she lived through multiple exciting, terrifying down to outright bizarre adventures and slowly but surely began to establish her very own network of friends and associates; people to fall back onto should she ever have to make a quick exit again in her life…

All in all she made more good than bad experiences and - aside from the occasional run in with slaving operations, which she made sure to shatter with utmost prejudice - her reputation was a positive one to most.
