Been a miner in the Kathol Sector for a few decades. Dangerous job, but it paid the bills. Had a few kids who flew the coop. Like to think I led a good life, mostly.
So why did it all have to blow up in my face?
My wife died in the hospital. Cancer. The six month battle drained us both. In the end, she didn’t win. Kids came to the funeral. Haven’t seen ‘em since.
Next day I shipped out for a two month asteroid splitting run. A week and a half into the job and a cable failure sent two tons of broken asteroid into my legs. Lost them both just below the knee.
Company sent me back, with a slip saying I was fired. Paid for my new legs, but I guess the insurance didn’t cover a man nearin’ fifty with a pair of cybo feet. Over twenty years I worked there and they just hung me out to dry like it was nothing.
No wife, kids gone, no job… some loophole denied me the company pension plan. Yeah, I was angry. Even my body is falling apart. Wake up every day with a new ache that wasn’t there before. Can’t even pay maintenance on my legs. Didn’t know how to do anything else, never learned how.
Guess that’s why I’m here, buyin’ this old boat with credits from sellin’ the house. Got a few ideas what to do with it. Just need the right crew.
