As a child, Kalyn was raised by her mother on-board The Wheel where both worked within one of the space station's many high-class establishments. While her mother was subjected to the life of a dancer, Kalyn's age (and lack of curves) had her toiling away within several casinos owned by a greedy old Hutt, Luh. She learned quickly that keeping her head down and simply carrying out the tasks assigned to her led to a simpler life, and as such she was a rather unremarkable child at best - quiet, and lacking any real social capabilities.
Throughout the many years she spent on The Wheel Kalyn met a great many men and women, all with extraordinary stories to tell. The adventures they experienced out there in the great void were hardly comprehensible to a child who had known only the space station, and as they came and went she began to develop a very strong desire to break away from the doldrums she had come to know. As she reached her gangly teenage years an opportunity to make something more of her life finally presented itself in the form of Captain Ran Kilian of the Solar Monarch, a most wonderful starship, who had lost a few members of his crew and as such was scouring The Wheel in search of replacements.
While she did not have any of the required experience, her eagerness to learn (and a distinct lack of other potential crew members) landed her a place among his entourage. Hers was a humble beginning to space-faring, consisting mostly of keeping the ship clean and well-stocked, though whenever she had a free moment she would sit and watch the other crew members in order to learn all that she could. She took a particular interest in the job of the Bothan mechanic, Borsk, who eventually provided her with a more involved approach to learning his trade.
The years passed by and the Galaxy became a frightful place to exist within. Every few days the ships internal comms would buzz with yet another distress signal, and governments fought for control of nearly all sectors of space. Danger awaited them around every corner, and on more than one occasion the Solar Monarch found itself under attack. Where once it had been pirates and other ne'er-do-wells, they found more and more that their assailants were the byproducts of war and subterfuge.
During one such incident the conflict led to the destruction of the Solar Monarch, which was later repurposed by salvagers, and many members of the crew who fought back were slaughtered where they stood. When Kalyn showed signs of joining the fray Captain Kilian intercepted and stunned her, incapacitating her and making it so that she lived another day. Kilian himself was not quite so lucky.
From there the remaining crew members found themselves within Imperial labour camps, working off their crimes to some Emperor or another despite the fact that their work had always remained on the right side of the law. Though they had been separated, every few weeks she would catch sight of Borsk or one of the others, but after a couple of months passed it was as though they had vanished entirely. Kalyn figured that they had been moved to a different sector, and as she had done in youth she kept her head down and simply worked.
After suffering two years of hard labour, respite came in the form of an uprising. During the chaos she, and several others, hijacked vessels and made a break for it. Most were shot down before they left the compound, but by sheer luck alone Kalyn and a couple of others made it out alive. Marked, and wanted within the Imperial sectors of space, she used her freedom to get underground.
From there she took as many jobs as she could get her hands on under the pseudonym "Mara", running errands both planet and space bound, while dodging the authorities at every corner...
