GENERAL INFORMATION
Planet Name: Kandara(Known as Jund to the tribes of the desert)
Demonym: Kandaran/Jundian
Region: Deep core (Odix hex)
System Name: Khaniq system
System Features: two suns orbit the Kandaran planet yearly, bearing the old names of ʽAqrab and Adh-Dhiʼb from which their names were bestowed upon them by Khadun IV of the Aladfar dynasty. A giant asteroid belt and series of asteroid fields hug the desert world, making it particularly tricky for large scale invasion fleets to disembark upon the planet and dangerous for unwary spacers. This travel hazard inadvertently stunted Kandaras growth as a space power early on, leaving them in relative isolation for a few hundred years as they expanded and developed on the planet.
Location: Odix hex, west of the hex namesake.
Major Imports: Due to the barren nature of the Kandaran planet, the monarchy heavily relies on importing essential commodities and technology from other worlds to make up for its lack of water and fertile land. This lack of technological edge has meant that the Kandarans have always lagged behind the rest of the Galaxy in terms of military and space technology.
Major Exports: Since explorers first settled the planet from Socorro in the warring era of the great hyperspace war, the people of this barren world have relied on the vast planetary abundance in mineral wealth and Mythra to survive and develop its economy. Many millennia of carefully guarding their resources and wealth have turned the once barren world into an extremely wealthy place.
Unexploited Resources: The volatile nature of the worlds tribal frontiers and the relative lawlessness of its deserts and mountains has prevented the Caliphate from being able to mine for resources for many thousands of year. Prospectors from off-world corporations believe there to be a vast Chromium reserve totalling a value of at least seven hundred trillion credits hidden beneath the Wādī al-Qamar(valley of the moon), yet violent tribal attacks from the local Khandian people have curbed subsequent efforts by the Kandaran tribal frontier authorities to start mining operations in the past thirty years.
Vizier Haruns ill-fated expedition to the valley to pacify the locals and set up mining operations gained notable notoriety, with his soldier's brutal conduct towards the local villages enflaming the situation into a full-blown war that erupted across the valley and the adjacent deserts. The elder statesmen met an abrupt end when he underestimated the cunning of the Khandians, his army of some four thousand men and a dozen tanks were lured into a sand storm by Khandian scouts and into the mouth of a far more massive army in wait. Save for a reserve force left at the edge of the storm, the Kandarans who ventured into the sand abyss and its leader Harun were slaughtered to a man. This event horrified the ruling class and government back home, prompting the further deployment of the Kandaran forces to that area to fight the tribes which continue indefinitely in a cycle of bloodshed and violence several years later.
GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION
Gravity: Standard
Climate: Arid.
Primary Terrain: The planet consists of mostly desert and mountains that stretch as far as the horizon. A small swamp isthmus exists in the northeast of the world, which is reportedly home to a Jedi ruin and its unique brand of wildlife that has managed to develop outside of the harsh desert confines.
Atmosphere: Type I
LOCATION INFORMATION
Capital City: Yathrib
Planetary Features: The south of the world is well developed in comparison to the north of the planet, which is still remarkably untouched by man save for mining operations and far-flung trader towns that hug oasis and mining areas like a scab. Archaeological digs by galactic treasure hunters and budding historians chanced upon several ruins and remnants of a long lost civilisation. Who they were and what happened to them is a question still being solved to this day.
POPULATION
Native Species: Khandian humans, the Jundian humans, the human tribes of the Khaybar expanse, a yet unidentified alien species that have long since gone extinct.
Immigrated Species: Kandaran humans that descend from Socorran explorers.
Population: Heavy, nine hundred million people recorded as of the last government census.
Demographics: The demographics of Kandara are majority human, with a small immigrant population of near humans and aliens found in the capital city. The vast majority of the world's populace is to be found in the south, with a smaller majority located in the north and beyond to its fringes, with 67% of the population comprising of Kandarans, followed by the Khandians at 16%, the Jundians at 13% and the Khaybar people at 3%.
Primary Languages: the vast majority speaks Kandaran basic, followed by the various dialects of the Kandaran language and the rarer tribal languages. Galactic basic is spoken by or at least understood by over half the population, functioning as a convenience when dealing with outsiders.
Culture: The original Kandaran settlers shared many similarities with their cousins in Socorro, yet centuries of isolation and subsequent cultural shifts have resulted in the Kandarans developing a more unique identity of their own. Contact with the native human tribes of Kandara brought much change as tribes were either wiped out or assimilated into Kandaran society, bringing their own traits and beliefs which joined into the melting pot that was a then developing proto Kandaran identity at the time.
Of the thirty native tribes recorded by the first explorers that set upon the planet, only a mere half a dozen still retain a unique sense of identity and autonomy from the much larger Kandaran majority. Attempts from successive and past Caliphs to assimilate the remaining tribes has led to much criticism from outsider governments who view it as unethical.
Genealogists divide the Kandaran ethnicity into two distinct groups:
1. The old guard of Yathrib, descendants of the first explorers that arrived from Socorro, these families constitute a significant portion of the government and noble hierarchy. Often intermarrying with other members of the old guard to keep their bloodlines pure. They are sometimes seen with disdain by the more imperial military complex, viewing them as being arrogant and an obstacle in attaining Kandaras importance as a modern-day planetary power.
2. Peoples of the desert, those born of the unions between the Socorran explorers and assimilated tribes of the deserts. They constitute roughly three-quarters of the population inhabiting the badlands and deserts north of Yathrib and within in the capital city. Loyal to the ruling Caliphs of Kandara, they have provided much manpower and support to the Caliphate and its governing body.
The various ethnic groups of Kandara all share a familiar unifying presence, with the faith of Melek helping keep the peace between the tribes of the deserts, the people of the cities and the government. Meleki's constitute over 96% of the population, with the earliest known references to the faith dating back to the 39th-century BBY. Followers of the religion believe in the divine power of Azhar, the creator and sole God of Melek. Azhar is the highest spirit of worship in Melek, along with being the first and most frequently invoked spirit in the holy books.
GOVERNMENT & ECONOMY
Government: Caliphate
Affiliation: Loyalties to the CIC: http://starwarsrp.net/index.php?app=groups&module=view&gid=830
Wealth: Wealthy, the planet enjoys high wealth as a core planet, yet there is a massive divide in wealth between the various classes. Only a small minority genuinely reap the benefits of the wealth the world enjoys.
Stability: The planet has been reasonably stable for the past hundred years, yet it suffers from hostile insurgencies in the northern frontiers of the planet and relative lawlessness in the tribal lands.
Freedom & Oppression: It is illegal to slander the Caliph/Caliphas of the planet or spread information that is anti-monarchy, doing so will lead to prison, torture or just merely vanishing off the face of the galaxy. Political parties are allowed in the parliament, with a pro-Imperial party by the name of Nizam al-Mulk(Order of the Realm) gaining dozens of seats in recent elections. Despite the paradise-like atmosphere emanated from strolling through Yathribs winding dusty streets, an underlying sense of dread and paranoia permutes the air that the citizens of this planet breath.
MILITARY & TECHNOLOGY
Military: Kandara has enjoyed a robust martial tradition as a planet of warriors, with its earliest incarnation of an army being formed in response to increasing raids by the native tribes. Although lacking in cutting edge technology compared to their counterparts in the core, the Kandaran forces make up for it with a near fanatical sense of zealotry and bravery in its troops.
It possesses a relatively small navy in comparison to its actual army, mainly consisting of old out of use First order warships and whatever they can buy from arms dealers.
Technology: Galactic standard
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Kandara was first chanced upon by Socorran explorers in the chaos and bloodshed of the waning hyperspace war days, sensing opportunity in the chaotic aftermath of the conflict to settle unexpected planets and profit on the instability of others. The Socorrans arrived in a dozen ships and set up in the area now known as Yathrib in the present. Perhaps the most favourable fact about the location was that it was uninhabited because the leaders of the nearby indigenous human tribes considered the site too poor and remote for agriculture. This gave the small Socorran colony a vital boost early on as they spent the early formative years setting up what would later become Yathrib, any first attempts at communication with the tribes ended in failure or the explorers losing them in the desert.
The first explorers soon encountered the others on the planet and were welcomed by the proto-Jundian tribes with dancing, feasting, and drinking ceremonies. Despite the hospitality of the Proto Jundian tribal chiefs, the presence of the Socorran settlers and a further expedition up into sacred tribal grounds by Captain Awad Ibn Abdullah provoked the Jundians, Azaris, and other tribals groups to form a coalition and mount a series of attacks on the Socorran settlement during a period of violence lasting from 4789 to late 4784BBY. With over 50% of the colonists dead from famine and constant tribal attacks, the leader of Socorrans pleaded for reinforcements and aid from the home planet. Their desperate pleas were answered, and in the following year, more soldiers, mercenaries and settlers arrived in huge numbers. The tides of fortune turned in favour of the invaders and by the end of the century, many of the native tribes either were wiped out and assimilated into the burgeoning Kandaran society or were chased into the deserts warm embrace where their descendants still live today.
With Yathrib as its capital and control of the space around the planet, the Kandaran caliphate was at the centre of interactions between the deep core worlds and beyond for many centuries. While the Caliphate was once thought to have entered a period of decline following the death of Hafaz II and the destruction of most of its forces aiding the new republic during the Yuuzhan Vong war. It is believed to be recovering once more under the Marwan dynasty who have been establishing close ties with the CIC.
Kandaras imperialist sympathies date back to the time of the galactic empire, when a rather infamous party known as the Nizam al-Mulk(Order of the Realm) emerged in the aftermath of the empires bloody coronation — bearing strong anti-alien viewpoints and a belief in joining the planet under a wider Imperial state. Founded and led by secretary general Hassan Afzal who was of common stock unlike many of his peers who came from the nobility. Exploiting the Caliphates weakened state, Hassan convinced the Caliph Abyan to throw in his lot with the empire and endorse the Nizam al-Mulk party.
The Nizam al-Mulk party came to establish political control of the planet, while manipulating its weak Caliph on the sideline to promote the parties anti-alien measures and imperialistic dogma. Hassan notably introduced several reforms to the Kandaran army, bringing them up to a elite standard while buying and equipping them with galactic empire surplus. However, behind the backs of the Caliph and parliament, Hassan developed the militant wing of the Imperial party, transforming it into a powerful paramilitary and non-planetary state actor. Fearing that if the Galactic empire lost the rebellion and fragmented, his power on Kandara would fade and the normal Kandaran forces would turn on him and reinstate the divine authority of the Caliph.
With the fall of the galactic empire in the wake of Endor, Hassan and his party were wanted for war crimes and for aiding the Imperials against the rebel effort. However subsequent assassination attempts and calls for him to extradited fail, in part to the unwillingness of the Caliphs to spark a potential planet-wide civil war that would rip the fragile society apart. As such, the planet enjoyed hosting one of the few pro imperial political militant groups well into the time of the new republic and subsequent dark ages.
In the present, the Caliphate stands poised to take a large role in the affairs of the CIC. With the Nizam al-Mulk party rising to prominence in politics once more with its cries of a call of arms against the Mandalorians.
