- Considered to be the standard energy module, this module manifests a hyper-ionized particle bolt that deals damage via a veritable hammer blow of concussive shock (kinetic energy), the searing release of thermal energy as the superheated plasma particles destabilize matter to produce extreme heat, and finally ionization energy which can disrupt electronics and overload energy shields in the manner of an electromagnetic pulse. Of particular significance, the bolt has an explosive effect upon connecting with a shield or solid object, including the blade of a lightsaber.

- Manifests an incendiary plasma beam encased within a magnetic field. Rather than exploding, the beam is designed to splash in a two-meter radius on impact with any solid object (including energy shields and lightsaber blades) as the searing plasma adheres itself to objects within its radius. Stuck to the target, the semi-solid plasma “gel” can potentially inflict significant and continuous extreme heat damage on shields, armor, and flesh, typically burning at temperatures in excess of six thousand degrees centigrade for several seconds.

- Water Gun: The KAR-18 has excellent damage potential, discharging bolts that burn hot enough to melt duravlex or slag impervium. Thus, it performs well against heavily-armored targets, with additional efficacy against armored vehicles.

- Washed: A bevy of electronic subsystems are incorporated into the KAR-18, including a system that functions to silence the weapon, an autosteady to improve control, cooling systems, and various other features. Should an EMP or Ion-based knock out these subsystems, the rifle would run hotter, be significantly less powerful, have less range, and be more difficult to control.
- Fish Out of Water: The KAR-18 is optimized for subaquatic operations, coming at the expense of efficacy in normal atmosphere and the vacuum. It is not accurate enough to reliably hit a mani-sized target past 150 meters when used outside the water. In addition, the weapon tends to overheat quickly when used outside the water, which to a certain point can warp the barrel.

Designed by First United Astral Engineering, the KAR-18 is a double barrel aquatic particle beam rifle intended for use by aquatic assault Sith troopers of the Sith Order. The weapon is built off of the frame of the ancient DC-12U Beam Rifle—a proven platform from the Clone Wars that was used by clone dive troopers. The need to develop and produce the weapon quickly due to upcoming Sith campaigns on water worlds drove the decision to utilize an older platform rather than designing a weapon entirely from the ground up.
As a weapon optimized for subaquatic environments, the KAR-18’s performance notably suffers outside of water. Past 150 meters in atmosphere or a vacuum, the weapon’s accuracy suffers to such an extent that it can not reliably hit a man-sized target. It also suffers from overheating issues outside of the water, which can not only damage the weapon, but may also exacerbate its accuracy issues in nonaquatic environments.
In spite of these issues, the KAR-18 is hoped to advance the Sith Order’s ability to independently wage aquatic warfare. Thus, access to the weapon was cleared for non-Kainate forces. However, non-Kainate Sith Order forces and units who requisitioned the weapons must generally pay a certain tithe paid to Malsheem.
