BIOGRAPHY:
The Beginning
Katarine Alysabeth Ryiah was a female human born into a family of distant Sith lineage hailing from an unknown planet. The proud Ryiah family was once a feared name throughout the galaxy for their deep-rooted control over the minds of others and their unmistakable strength in the Force and the power of illusion. Their divine rule was granted to them mostly due to the mating rituals allowing the family to keep their royalty flowing through their bloodline. Kat’s parents, Troy and Anastasia Ryiah were both twins and as custom in their family they married and gave birth to Katarine and her twin brother Daxium. Unfortunately for the family Katarine possessed many qualities unheard of in a Ryiah heir. She showed the ability for extreme kindness and understanding, and even as a young baby Kat repelled the darkside of the Force. All of the other known Ryiah members were convinced there must be a genetic defect causing Kat’s uncustomary behavior so at Troy’s insistence the little girls memory was wiped clean using the ancient teachings of the mind the clan practiced. For a second time Kat was taught to use the darkside but shockingly she repelled it once more with her pure heart. In a fit of anger her father locked her away and forced her twin to keep an eye over her. The little girl endured torture from her family for almost twenty years, and during that time her memory was altered so much that Kat had no idea who she was. On her nineteenth birthday she was finally given the opportunity to escape. Daxium could not follow his mothers orders and be cruel to Katarine. Despite everything they were still brother and sister. After seeing the brutal way his sister was treated Daxium started to hate his parents. The two decided to run away together but during their journey they were separated in a busy space station. Having no memory and no information about what the galaxy was like outside her parents cruelty Katarine went to the only other place she knew existed, The Jedi Temple on Naboo.
Life as a Padawan
When the Jedi discovered Katarine’s purity they were eager to teach her. A young hybrid Jedi Knight named Jessari Tanelorn agreed to tutor Kat in the ways of the lightside of the Force. Katarine
excelled quickly through her training, and demonstrated an extreme defensive maturity in her mental capabilities. The cruelty she had endured had manifested itself inside her mind and Jessari discovered that Kat was so strong she couldn’t control what happened to an intruder who intended to break into her mental defenses. As Jedi often used mind tricks Katarine was warned to use caution because of her skills. Kat needed no convincing. Having seen what could come of mental torture Kat shied away from mind tricks and perfected her use of the Force in other areas.
Jessari and Katarine trained together for several months and during that time together they liberated an Ewok village from slavery, stopped a pirate’s cruelty on Tantooine, and aided the Jedi Council in several investigative missions. Katarine proved to be a great Jedi Investigator with a keen eye for solving a mystery.
After almost a year together Jessari was called away on an assignment and the elder Master Spark Vallen stepped in to assist Kat with her lightsaber construction. Kat proved skilled in lightsaber combat but she never demonstrated the aptitude with a blade as she had for the Force. Katarine’s pure nature made her a shy warrior. She practiced each of the lightsaber forms to be a well-rounded duelist but Katarine was never a warrior at heart. With practice and dedication Katarine mastered these forms as best she could and was allowed to take her trials. During the trials she confronted the loss of her memories, and although she never regained them she came out on top of her family struggles. Her immense power in the Force aided her against her weaker battle skills and Katarine was granted the rank of Jedi Knight after only a little more than a year of training as a padawan. The Jedi Council was weary to promote Kat for although she was gifted with the Force she also held high doubt in her own abilities, and had already proven her heart got in the way of her duty at times. These are struggles Katarine would continue to endure during her knighthood.
The First Mission of Knighthood
As a green Jedi Knight Kat was still unsure of her abilities. Her first confrontation came when she faced the Yuzahan Vong Artemis Obuldi. Kat attempted to use the Force to drown Artemis but her inexperience with Vong technology made her unaware of the capabilities of his ooglith masqure. Artemis sealed off his airways and was about to strike Kat down when she was rescued by the Rebellion clone trooper, T.J 1884. Both Captain T.J and Kat retreated to a rebel medical tent and were told their injuries would take weeks to repair by medical technicians with the limited tent supplies. During those weeks a short romance evolved between Kat and T.J, mostly out of gratitude for each having saved the others life. Things never proved physical between the two and both left each other to return to the lives they were destined to lead. T.J 1184 continued his duties as a captain in the rebellion and Katarine returned to the Jedi to start the training of a new generation.
Her First Padawan
Mist Mayweather came to the Jedi as a young energetic woman looking to follow in the footsteps of her uncle Zeek who was a famous Jedi Knight. During the training of Mist the woman became friends with Katarine as most padawans tended to do, but Mist seemed to take things further with Katarine. Kat accepted the clinginess of her padawan and trained Mist in the standard protocol of Jedi abilities. Mist showed talents with telekinesis, which Kat worked extremely hard with the young woman to perfect. She chose to teach Mist the acrobatic style of lightsaber combat, but because of Mists easy attachment and vulnerable emotions Kat would not teach her Juyo in fear that the emotions needed for this form would do more harm than good. During a mission to Ambria Kat and Mist discovered a hidden cave and hot springs, which produced the crystal Mist would need to construct her lightsaber. Mist proved capable of handling the trials but seemed hesitant to face them, despite Kat assuring her she was ready. Her refusal to accept the trials meant Kat would continue being her master for almost a year longer than most padawans were trained.
During the tutelage Katarine found it difficult to separate the boundaries between master and friend. Mist often pushed these boundaries uncomfortably for Katarine, and even the refusal to let Katarine move on when the training was done left Kat uncertain what to do. She sought the aide of other masters, and upon their request decided to train another student even though Mist Mayweather had not taken the rank of Jedi Knight. It was the belief of the Council that this action would help Mist move forward, and also help Katarine expand her considerable skills as a Jedi teacher.
Break in at the Senate
Still undecided on who her next student would be Kat was assigned to the Coruscant Senate chambers to protect the politicians against a feared assassination attempt. Her distaste of politicians was not unknown to the Council but they chose to send her despite her distaste of the assignment. During the investigation Kat discovered two men were attempting to rob the Senate because of a bet. One of them was a young man named James Terran who charmed Kat with his flirting pirate ways. He attempted to lie to Kat as to why he was there but Kat saw through his lie and informed him she was a Jedi Knight. James chuckled and told her she was so pretty he would have never thought she was a Jedi since they were usually old men in robes. He gave Kat a kiss on the cheek and then flung himself over the railing of the senate. Kat chased after him but he met up with his pirate captain and was gone before she had the chance to bring him in for questioning. After the encounter Kat spent several sleepless nights’ thinking of the young blond man until finally she ran a background check on him. The information told her he was the first mate aboard a pirate ship called the Emerald Lion, and was wanted for a lot of petty crime throughout the galaxy. The records also indicated that he was not suspected of murder, which was uncommon for most pirates. Kat tried to push the young man out of her mind to focus on her duties but he invaded her dreams often. There was something about his face that was simply unforgettable to the woman.
Can I Buy You a Drink?
Incredibly Kat met the young blond haired pirate once more while she was in a tavern on Naboo, Kat was following a lead for a suspected terrorist when James sat down at her table with a lopsided grin on his face. Knowing she should arrest him, and yet not wanting to do so, Kat made small talk with the man and introduced herself. He was surprisingly open with her, telling her of his childhood in an orphanage on Dantooine. The caretaker of the orphanage, Kai Albi Gran had once been a Jedi and had noticed the talents of James as a young boy. When James had left the orphanage he lied to Gran but the old man was wise to the pirate life the boy was pursuing. James promised that once he was ready he would attempt to train as a Jedi because the old man had told of the strength in the Force James possessed. Kat told James that if he were ever to come to Naboo she would train him and help him keep his promise. The encounter between the two ended with a walk outside and a night of watching the sunset. James left Kat but told her he planned to return someday to keep his promise. Kat felt a flutter in her chest and sincerely hoped the man was telling the truth. She returned to the Temple once more to await his return and continue her path as a Jedi Investigator.
During the months to follow Katarine created and lead a small team of others who called themselves the Investigators. One of their most deadly assignments was to follow the Sith Master Malice Draclau, whom was causing havoc in several corners of the galaxy. The team never brought Malice into custody, but they did manage to stop a horrible illness of Malice's design from spreading to the entire population of Corellia.
Keeping A Promise
True to his word James showed up at Naboo and requested training. Kat accepted him as her second padawan, which upset Mist Mayweather. Mist grew even more annoyed at the blossoming romance between Kat and James.
Still following her heart more than a Jedi should, Katarine took James to the Lake Country of Naboo to train. The weeks spent together however quickly proved intimate and both confessed their love to each other. When they returned to the Temple, Katarine was distraught with visions of the return of Daxium Ryiah. Following the Force, she set out to find her brother with Mist and James in tow. Disastrous events ensued and Mist Mayweather, ignoring Kat’s orders attacked an evil Sith henchmen, resulting in the trio’s imprisonment. In a surprising turn of events Sith Master Sandrius Draclau rescued Kat and her padawans, but not before a Sith artifact had implanted the spirit of Anastasia Ryiah in Kat’s mind. Sandrius helped Katarine put up walls in her mind against the intrusion but they proved to be only temporary.
The Darkness
Eventually Anastasias presence in Kat’s mind could no longer be contained. The Jedi Knight lost control over her body and Anastasia took the lead. The spirit attempted to assassinate Jedi Master Kahn Porte, and when she was unsuccessful she fled to Zeltros. Anastasia’s old lightsaber crystal, the hatestone, was buried on Zeltros and the woman needed it because Kat’s lightsaber was designed to let only a wielder of the lightside of the Force use it. When she arrived on Zeltros she met Sith Master Avicus DuSang who realized what was inside Kat’s mind and destroyed it. In its absence he left his own traces of the darkside and Kat fell victim to his orders. Surprisingly DuSang cherished Kat for her incorruptible kindness and he proved to be nothing but a friend to Katarine. The dark man sensed that Katarine could not be corrupted, one of the few Jedi he had ever seen this in. He saved her life on many occasions and even attended her wedding latter that year to the newly knighted James Terran.
It’s Better to Have Love and Lost...
After finally convincing Mist Mayweather to take the trials and helping the young woman with the bizarre events that had turned her into a Cathar/Human hybrid, Katarine found her marriage to James Terran blossoming beautifully. Unfortunately good things cannot last forever and James disappeared on an assignment. Katarine searched for him for months with her fellow Jedi, until finally the Council declared him dead. Convinced that she would have felt his death, the grieving Katarine continued to search for her husband. She left the Jedi to search the Underworld in the hopes she would run in to some old friends who could help her find James.
Finally after a year away from the Jedi Kat returned and threw herself into her work to help fight the loss she felt in her husband’s absence. She took a third padawan named Aden Lothiar. Aden had a complicated past with the Sith Master named Lord Grimm. Kat found herself delaying her responsibilities to help Aden, and when she learned he was constructing a planet designed to produce genetically enhanced species she turned the other cheek in the hopes she could help the young man instead of letting him rot in a prison. Eventually Aden fled the Jedi after being injured on a mission with Kat, and she left with him. He killed a few knights on his way out and Kat was suspected of being his accomplice.
Life as a Jedi Fugitive
Aden took Kat to the planet he had been building and a complicated bonding took place between them. Eventually Katarine escaped. She was separated from Aden and she spent several months looking for him. Kat learned that Aden was holding the empress hostage aboard her flagship. She went to find Aden and brought him back to the Jedi after separating her padawan from the spirit of Lord Grimm. She saved Aden Lothiar but the Sith Master Grimm was still out there, and this worried her.
Upon her return she had to face a trial for her fugitive actions. The Council informed Katarine that she should have trusted them with her struggles. They advised her to learn to depend on her friends and surprisingly offered her no punishment for her actions. After the hearing Jedi Master Vohn Excel informed Katarine that she had earned the rank of Jedi Master. She learned a valuable lesson to trust her ally’s and friends and was welcomed and celebrated from many Jedi in the Order.
Unfortunately James Terran was not among them.
Her Lightsaber
Katarine wields a duel-phased lightsaber. The standard blade is white and produced from a Solari crystal which only activates itself if it's user is pure in the lightside of the Force. When she twists the handle the crystal is exchanged for the hatestone. The hatestone is a dark crystal that only works for a user deeply in-tune with the darkside of the Force. This crystal produces a black blade. The two crystals are constantly at war with each other causing Katarine's lightsaber to have a very aggrivated Force aura.
