Katarn Homestead: Awkward moments

Svora Eden

The day was bright and as was often the case he was up to watch the sunrise. The warm rays of light slowly crept across his face and he closed his green eyes as was his custom. The morning sun always made him feel much like another person might think of their morning Kaff. It soothed, energized, and made him feel a pleasant satisfaction. He wore his pajama pants but was otherwise unclad as he sat in the large garden. He felt different today, not quite himself, and his scalp had begun to itch.

He found a nice spot, where it was clear to begin his morning meditations before he was to gather vegetables for breakfast but he simply couldn't focus and his head just itched all the more for trying to ignore it. A fine yellow powder began showing on his bare shoulders and dusting his dark hair when he scratched. His mind began to wander toward girls he saw in classes and he found himself thoroughly confused. He thought he should go to [member="Avalore Eden"], his mum, if he was sick she would know what to do. However, he would have to ask soon, his siblings would notice right away if something was wrong and he would hate to worry them.

Avalore was not up with the sunrise this morning - a rare deviation from her otherwise normal routine. Between motherly duties, mentoring duties, Healer duties, studying for her Doctorate, Gardening duties, and everything in between - she had recently decided to throw something else into the mix.

After much talk with [member="Meeristali Peradun"] and long weeks of consideration, Avalore had bitten the proverbial bullet and decided to move forward with the creation of the Eden Foundation. Working in partnership with the similarly named Eve Foundation as well as a few other select investors, the Chief Healer had secured plans to move forward with the next major project in her life: the creation of Eden Hall and the opening of the Eden name to the galaxy's many orphans.

This had all been under wraps, of course, and discussed only with [member="Gabriel Sionoma"] and Stali, thus far, but today would perhaps be the day she broke the news to the rest of the family. Now that things had been decided and the first steps to the process were underway that seemed the next natural step. But first: sleep.

After that? Well, one foot in front of the other as they say.

Sleep, yes, and one large, densely muscled and long-tailed naked man was sprawled with one leg dangling off his side of the bed next to [member="Avalore Eden"], the sheets draped over an approximate half of him, and in the barest fashion over the other part of his body that that could be said to have a mind of its own. It stirred, and so did he, a faint groan slipping free of him from the depths of slumber. His tail flopped over, then back again, then all of Meeristali flopped over, an arm taking purchase around the smaller dozing lump next to him. A pleased, one-note hum rumbled in his throat, his face pressing into the back of her neck while the rest of him curled around her, and pressed into her backside. A small mercy he wasn't snoring.

The sunrise could go kark itself today. The shuttle to Sullust didn't need him on it. Readying the young for active duty fell on other shoulders, trusted shoulders, while the otherwise retired felinoid took in earned respite, days of uninterrupted time with his family. The battlefield called to him less and less as the years passed, and he had gained new purpose in a predictable way of life - as predictable as it could be with five children and the comings and goings of others both friend and family. Those lines did blur, and he wouldn't trade any of it for anything. There was no taking any of it away.

There was adding, and there always would be. The addition to come would be their biggest, most ambitious yet, and the next marker in the way they did life: an altogether natural move.

Moony eyes of burnt gold settled upon the green form of Svora from the path at his back. Curious as they always were, his sister tailed him in silence. Emme didn't often make an effort to disturb her siblings while they meditated and despite her inability to attain any form of Force empowerment through the act she'd sometimes joined them in practice. Truth be told, their abilities with the esoteric nature of the Force mystified her if only for the fact that she couldn't do it herself.

Blessed with the grace and agility of her father, Emme maintained a quiet presence while she watched. The sun was rising and this, she knew, was an important part of the day for Svora. For her brother--this one at least--was a plant and not a man, and so various things about his nature were different from her own. Where she subsided on a healthy carnivorous diet he subsided on plant matter and minerals, water and sunlight. Especially sunlight. She knew this because she had to, because it meant being able to understand her brother and take care of him when a time might arrive that he could not take care of himself.

She knew these things and they did not bother her nor confuse her. No, mostly they made her smile.

Yet despite this, or perhaps in spite of this, the Felacat hybrid had noticed something different about Svora over the last few days. Something about him seemed off; his smell had changed and - she noted as keen eyes watched him scratch at his scalp - there was indeed an unusual thing going on about him.

Bare feet silently padded forward across cobble stone, bringing her to [member="Svora Eden"] as he drank in the rising sun.

"Vo," the cat mewled gently as she moved to stoop by his side, sleek tail curling at her toes, "you're snowing."

His focus slipped over and over as time alowly ticked by. He had always been so good at meditation, and as good at controlling his feelings as could be expected. He rolled his shoulders and shook his head as if the quick motion would clear his mind of the fog that was his thoughts.

He took a deep breath in and slowly let it out while the sun light danced across his pale skin. He adjusted his feet beneath him and straightened his posture. No good. Mayve he should have excercised first, or done his chores early, but he never had to do that. Being centered before his efforts was always so much easier before. He was sick. There could be no doubt. Could he have had sugar in something he ate without noticing? No, Mum was too sharp to let some sugar slip into his meals.

He adjusted again but broke posture to scratch his scalp again. Another shake of the head sent a fine dust into the air to whirl in the sun light. Just then his sister's voice reached his ears with her tell tale tones. Snowing? He looked at himself and stood abruptly. His eyes wide and his hands out in front of him as confusion read plainly on his face.

"Emme?" He said in a hushed tone that spoke both embarrassment and worry, "I think I'm sick."

He looked at her his bright green eyes a plea for aid.

"What should I do." He asked his voice cracking subtlely. He didn't know about Zelosian life cycles and pollinating among his people. How could he? He knew more about field surgery than he did about Zelosian reproduction. Perhaps he missed a class?

There’s a machine for that…” He stated in a mock Des tone, scrunching up his face in the warm sun. Taking a step forward, he gripped the tool with calloused hands and arched the blade across the shoulder high wheat. “Of course there is, Destin. It doesn’t mean I have to use it!”

The scythe whistled in the subtle breeze as he took another step forward, the dull gray blade popping out from the wheat with every swing - like a drunken meerkat standing up on hind legs, only to fall over after every attempt.

He was frustrated and prefered the isolation of responsibility, triumphing over that sinking feeling of ennui. Beyond chores and other tasks, it was up to the Eden kids to make their own activities. Some of them leaned towards computers, others leaned towards more familial interactions. Maud just needed the open air. The warm hug of a sun, the sound of leaves rustling, and dance of the grass grains.

Stubborn mud, always doing things the hard way…” He cleaved down another row as he moved through the field like a purposeful roomba. He glistened with sweat, trickling down the scar on his left cheek and soiling the jerkin of tanned hide. Raking his his fingernails against the corded muscle of his bare arms, he stabbed the scythe into the ground.

He sensed activity back at the homestead, despite the relatively early hour. Maybe he’d see if Elli was around. He had a new flower to show her. A wilted lion. He couldn’t wait to tell her why it was called that.

Elli, like most of the Eden children, was an early riser. There was something about being in the East garden when the sun rose. There was already a thin layer of dirt and grass on her clothes and skin even within the first few hours of dawn. Legs were hooked into a branch high up of one of the fruit trees along the property. Green-streaked hair hung down, the blood rushing to her head making a tingling, light feeling bubble in her stomach.

She giggled, the sound blending in with the chirping morning-song birds and stirring creatures with the light.

Lime-green gaze squinted in the distance at the tell-tale stature of Maud. A kindred spirit. While he worked the outdoors, she used it more as her playground. Out of all the Eden children, she tended to complete chores last, often times getting lost within her own games and tugging Svora into her mischief when she could. She wasn't an empath but she seemed to be in-tune with her siblings and family.

Right now she was too distracted swinging from the highest branch of the tree to feel anything really off. But she did offer an upside down wave to Maud. Unlike her brother, her pale skin remained pale no matter how much time she spent outdoors - the ethereal glow remaining.

"Maaaaaaud," she yelled, undisturbed by the fact that her voice might wake up others still sleeping in the homestead, like her adopted father, Stali. "Come play with me!"

The ‘most’ in the ‘most of Eden children’ excluded Destin, of course. He was the black sheep of the family. Without a tree-hugging bone in his body, given neither to the Force nor physical combat, and much fonder of his datapad than enjoying the great outdoors of Sulon.

Something stirred under the duvet.

It was vaguely man-shaped, and exceedingly displeased with its current state of being – that is, awake.

Groaning, Des dragged himself from beneath the covers. As he blinked blearily at the sunlight spilling through the slits in the blinds, the boy tiptoed around for his slippers. Black (but fluffy). Off came the pyjamas (black), on came the hoodie (black). He shuffled down the corridor to wrestle his hair (black) into submission in the bathroom mirror.

In the distant outside world, someone was yelling. An Elli someone, probably. Always so loud.

His brow darkened as he made his way to the kitchen. Opi was already up and about, ignoring his blossoming scowl as she pulled him in for a bear hug. Des put up a weak protest before he was swallowed by tickling furs. Muffled Shyriiwook emerged from the depths of the embrace – the wookiee inclined her head and crooned in kind.

Released into free air once more, Des navigated around the aisle to pour three cups of steaming hot caf. Black eyes came to life as the boy drained his own with a few long gulps, seemingly unbothered by the scalding temperature.

He placed a grudging kiss on Opi’s cheek before scaling the stairs again, this time equipped with a pair of mugs – one for momhttps://www.webdesign.org/img_articles/22422/24.jpg, one for dad.

Destin was clearly the nicest among Eden spawn.

He gave a polite little knock on his parents’ door, then nudged it open to let the smell of caf waft in.

“Morning.”

He crested the small gulley of the back field, rows of wheat transitioning to small tufts of sedge that lined an erosional feature, with a hand held over his eyebrow. He forgot his straw hat back in his room, frayed that it might be. It served and was functional, he couldn’t expect much more. But he was limited now, isolated out in the high sun, the sort that bronzed his skin and provided an abundant overlay of freckles.

He heard her voice first, cringing at the shrill noise as it resonated down the gentle hill. He was, beyond a doubt, pleased to know that she was awake and ready for the day. Though he feared her caterwauling would wake up half the moon, mom and dad included. But that was all things that were cast adrift as he emerged from the field, bare feet taking to the stone and paver sand of the garden.

He found her, like a jostling bat, hanging from one of the ornamental trees of the Eastern Garden. Striding forward, dusting off the inflorescence of wheat and rye grass, he crossed his arms as he approached. A foot separated them, as he looked up towards the branch she hooked her heels into. This would have been the perfect time to show her the wilted lion, but he would be damned if he would dig the thing up so soon after flowering.

Eyes of deep emerald carried a smile that flowed over his face, gentle like the coursing of babbling brook, as he decided whether he was for games this morning. “Oh, I dunno Ellibird…” He smiled as he pressed his thumb against her forehead. “You hang from there much longer, I’ll be catching you after you pass out.” He nodded to a section of the garden, unknowingly populated by his other siblings. “I sense something over there...come on, let’s go check it out.

It may or may not have been where the wilted lion was blooming. It also may have been where a particular Zelosian was coming of age. The universe was built upon coincidence, it seemed.

A bell-like giggle escaped her throat. Much to Maud's relief it would be significantly quieter this time. But not because she was worried about anyone hearing but because he was so much closer now. The need to shout had disappeared which each of his enclosing footfalls on the sandy ground.

Ellibird

Another giggle like a babbling brook.

"How come every time I see you, you seem a little taller? Aren't you worried you'll hit the stars soon?"

Pointed pale ears twitched beneath tufts of hanging hair. Whimsical expression seemed permanently affixed to her features. Curiosity filled much lighter green orbs than her brother, citrus greens casting to where over there was. If there was a chance it was Svora, she'd be very pleased. Well, really any of the siblings. Even the big brown-noser Destin.

But she had a particularly specific herbal question to ask Svora.

"Yeah, let's go," voice whispered in affirmation as she began to spin a new game. "But we have to be quiet and pretend we're spies, okay?" Hands briefly went to her hips as she attempted to cast a serious look from a blood-rushed face at Maud. Heaving herself up, the teen went to scramble out of the air and back on solid ground.

With a stretch she leaned up to sniff at her brother, dainty hands reaching to paw and tug at the taller sibling to get him to bend down.

"You smell like sugar ... nectar," she said as she examined his hair, claws retracted, "your hair feels dry - ATCHOO!"

A sniffle, she shook her head at the plume of pollen stirred up.

Tail flickering at her back, the young girl drew still as sensitive ears picked up the sounds of voices and a nose equipped for the hunt took in the scent of siblings. Unmistakable. A small frown appeared on her face as she then snared her brother's hand and began tugging him off towards the south gardens, "You need water, Vo."

"Mmmaud! Elli!" a chirrup to the trees. No one could sneak up on Emme except for her father, "Help me get the wash basin, Vo needs to soak!"

Tug tug tug.

Svora resisted breifly out of embarrassment before following Emme. Water? He bathed the night before. He always kept clean. Mum, would be cross if he hadn't. He winced as he heard her call for Maud and Elli. All thoughts of this being a quiet problem evaporated when he thought of Elli's reaction and her incredible memory.

He waved as they came through the trees and saw his larger brother. He understood Maud better than Destin. They shared a love of the out doors. Svora liked tech well enough but he couldn't spend all day with it. He needed open sky. Elli he loved because of her unending vibrancy and good humor. He was the better tree climber despite what she thought about that one race. He looked at them as his head itched and left powder in the air almost visible when the sun caught it just right.

"Something's wrong with me." He said as Emme tugged him by. (Kitty on a mission that one.) His shirtless shoeless form stumbled behind her all the same. Until he realized they may just dunk him and not worry about personal space while they did it. Green flushed his cheeks as his blood rose to his face.

"Emme! Emme!" He said urgently, "I can soak myself. It's ok. Maud! Elli! Tell her I can do it my self."

She tug tug tugged.

"It's ok. It barely itches now." He said as he absently scratched the back of his head. "I can draw my own water." He said feeling lightheaded like when you stand up too fast from sitting low. "Ugh. I need to check the baffors." He groanded to himself.

With those hyper-sensitive ears it was highly unusual for the sound of their son not to wake her husband. So attuned to his surroundings as he often was, Avalore sometimes wondered if he could sense things beyond the scope of the physical realm. Like if he knew, intrinsically, that it was his son that entered and murmured a word of greeting - that he could continue to sleep soundly.

Because he did.

Avalore had already roused from his movements and had been content to drift back off to sleep until the sounds of her children echoed in through the open window. Always early to rise they were, mostly. Destin was her late sleeper. Her little green night-child. So often she'd find him snoozing in his room surrounded by his gadgets and-

"Morning."

The Healer blinked herself awake, pulling out of the light doze Stali's body heat had lulled her into, and slowly sat up beneath the weight of his arm to look at the door of their bedroom.

"Des?" a tired squeak of a reply, she rubbed the sleep from her eyes and smiled as she caught the sight of the mugs in his hands. It smelled good. Mother gestured quietly to her son to come over before reaching to tug the bed sheets a little more fully over her mate. Stali may have slept in the nude but Avalore did not. Always cold, she was. T-shirt and shorts kinda gal.

"You're up early," Avalore muttered gently as he handed her the mug, "couldn't sleep?"

[member="Destin Eden"] [member="Meeristali Peradun"]

Oh, he was awake. He'd been roused the moment the scent of his son combined with the increasing proximity of his footsteps to say that he was coming, but acknowledging his own waking was something he didn't have to do, until the scent of caf became too difficult to resist. His eyelids slid up, orange irises showed; he lifted his head, pulled his arm off of Avalore, and sat up, pulling the sheets and bunching them in his lap. For reasons. Stali gave Destin a slight toothy smile, one of his canines catching on his bottom lip, and reached for his mug of caf.

"I've often wondered if he does sleep," came the half-joking murmur, as his mouth was obscured by the mug, "or if he cat-naps," the thought finished after a swallow. Destin's technological affinity was outside of his expertise that ran in other veins, but his own knowledge in that realm had went up because of it, due to his earnest attempts to maintain a connection to the first of his two children that weren't endowed with command of the Force. Stali looked on his green-skinned son, eyebrows lifting along with the mug in his hand, a salute of sorts.

"Good caf."

He didn't even have time to agree to these clandestine games, offered by the whimsical Elli, before his other siblings were upon them. Though no Destin in sight, which made sense. After all, it was day time and the sun was out. It was always out on Sulon, in some fashion or another.

"Needs to soak, does he?" A scarred eyebrow lifted as he looked to Svora, a flush of rose against his cheeks. Perhaps that was embarrassment, perhaps it was something else altogether. Approaching, Maud placed a hand on his brothers shoulder and smiled. "Phe isn't one to be convinced otherwise, is she..."

He lifted his hand, pressing digits together and rubbing. Pollen.

Narrowing his eyes, he looked back towards Elli before looking back towards Svora. "Oh, maybe not a basin...but rain does help to keep the pollen down..." He nodded, perhaps dialing in on what was going on. "Maybe not a basin...maybe the garden hose will do?" A mischievous grin arched as he silently nudged Elli to go grab it.

Unless she was still intent on playing as a spy.

Tips of pointy-ears twitched beneath folds of dark, green hair. Head tipped to the side, eyes narrowing in deep thought on her brother - the one with the pollen cloud. Of course, she realized she'd never be able to actually sneak up on Emme. Her sister always heard it when she snuck in late after playing out past midnight in the glowing ankarres forest.

Hadn't told mum or papa yet.

Though, Elli had a feeling Papa knew as well, with those ears of his and all.

Shoulders with a playful twitch shrugged at Maud. "Mkay." Skipping around the mulberry pushes, head popped back up as she dragged the long garden hose toward her three other siblings, a steady stream already going. Spy games might happen later in the afternoon. Her stomach was starting to feel funny anyway. But she ignored it.

Fingertips smoothed over the nozzle, feeling the pressure build. Feet set solidly on the grass. Lips twitched as her thumb pressed down, sending a spray of water up in the air, which would arc down like rain on Svora and any siblings standing too close. A giggle rippled free from her throat as water streamed down her wrist and arm.

The younger twin curled his lip in disgust. “Couldn’t sleep? I was thrown out of bed! By them.

As usual.” He pointed an accusing finger through the window. Following it a moment later with his dark gaze, Des plastered a palm over his face.

What a sound smack it was.

Leave it to his brothers and sisters to start turning the garden into mud before noon. Black eyes narrowed into slits. Elli was… what was she doing. He rushed to the window, pulling the blinds open to fully grasp the situation.

Or attempt to, at least.

The caf compliments (cafpliments?) drifted right past him. Das stared at his siblings, aghast, as Ells opened fire.

Or water, as the case may be.

“Mum.”

“Mum, they’re soaking Vo with the hose.”

[member="Avalore Eden"] | [member="Meeristali Peradun"] | [member="Armaud Eden"] | [member="Ellifain Eden"] | [member="Svora Eden"]

Sipping slowly, enjoying the slow waking experience, Avalore smiled wryly after her son's complaints. Des never did fit in with the green-gang, despite being the right color. Emme, at the very least, was a blessing to the boy. He and the little cat had quite a bit in common and it seemed he'd taken to big-brother status in that regard well enough.

Though the hose comment got a sputtering cough from the Healer, sending drips onto the blanket and sheets.

"Oh bother..." Avalore reached for a nearby tissue box and began mopping up, exchanging a glance with her husband, "guess we've slept in long enough today. Des why don't you go grab some towels and bring them downstairs, I'm sure Opi almost has breakfast ready. I want all of you at the table this morning. Stali and I have an announcement to make."

[member="Destin Eden"] [member="Ellifain Eden"] [member="Meeristali Peradun"] [member="Svora Eden"] [member="Armaud Eden"]

Oooo, a hose. Yes that could work.

Emme nodded her head enthusiastically, lip-biting smile broadening.

"Don't worry Vo," she chirruped, "we'll mmmake you better!"

And then Elli had the hose, sending the cat dashing to the garden edges with a squeal. Next thing she knew she was dodging waterdrops with bubbling laughter.

"Get Vo! Get Vo!"

He bit back a chuckle at his wife's sputtering, rubbing her back; the exchanged glance had his eyebrows lofting, a sound of assent following a swallow of caf, before setting his mug on a sidetable and calling to him a pair of loose-fitting trousers to wriggle into under the covers while she gave her directives to the younger of their two eldest. His nose twitched at the muddle of scents: wet children, faint pollen, breakfast... his stomach murmured at the prospect of food.

"Yes, brrreakfast," he rumbled, slipping off of the bed, now only half-naked, and retrieving his mug from where he'd left it, "and..." he paused in his track around the end of the bed, "...pollen?" It elicited some sort of vague memory that he was having trouble putting his finger on, and he moved to the window, looking over Des's shoulder, and pulled from his mug. Pollen didn't usually do much more than make him sneeze if enough got in his nose... "Oh," he said all of a sudden, recognising the memory this particular scent of pollen invoked, and looked back over his shoulder, at Ava, "must be a Zelosian thing."

Stali looked back out the window where the hose was as alive as the other four of his children party to its liveliness. "You think Svorrra can get overrrwaterrred?" Hyponatremia was a extant risk amongst many species, though a minor one. Most weren't going to take in enough water for it to be a problem, but 'Vo was a plant. Ish. He'd learned a lot over the years, but his thumbs were never green.
