GENERAL INFORMATION
Kato Dréze is a noble and career soldier. He is Second Heir of Duke Raoul Dréze-Dornéi of New Alderaan. A gifted tactician both on and off the battlefield. He is skilled in leading soliders, piloting starfighters, as well as a crack shot and an excellent lightsaber duelist. Kato is a complex man who believes that war is the pinnacle of the human spirit. While holding the ideals of nobility and chivalry in the highest regard, he holds on to unresolved shame related to his force abilities and the ruthless actions required to maintain power.

HISTORY
Born on New Alderaan to an aristocratic family, Kato was the second of four children. His father, Duke Raoul Dréze-Dornéi, was a politician, investor, and owned considerable resource holdings in the sector that he leased out to mining corporations. The House Dornéi had long fallen from its glory days as a noble house of old Alderaan, yet even after nearly a millennia of displacement, the royal titles remained as a formal courtesy honoring tradition.
Kato’s mother, Duchess Corinna, insisted on strict discipline for her children. From an early age they were taught to understand the sort of behavior that was unbecoming of their class station. She was also force-sensitive, a fact she long tried to hide from even those close to her. As a result, it was soon discovered that Kato had inherited this force-sensitivity along with his younger sister Lanitha.
Duke Raoul saw force-sensitivity as a shameful genetic aberration; a birth defect rather than a blessing. To keep his afflicted son away from the public eye, Raoul sent Kato to a boarding school on Brentaal IV operated by a fringe sect of the Jedi Order. The school was not designed to necessarily integrate the students into their ranks but rather to simply guide them on the path of the light. The Duke would not permit one of his children to become a force monk.
Kato excelled in his studies, particularly in lightsaber combat. He found his place in sparring sessions where he became one of the most skilled duelists in his class. However, as years passed his instructors became wary of the young noble. They found his desire to succeed to be more concerning as his ambitions grew. He graduated with honors but did not return to his homeworld.
Instead, Kato applied and was accepted into Naval War College. He initially intended to become a member of the Starfighter Corps. After two years he found himself drawn to the office role. His talent for strategy and his studious nature allowed him to once again excel among his peers and he even attended an extra year to finish with additional specializations.
Upon graduation, Kato was called back to New Alderaan as his mother’s health began to fail. He joined the planetary defense force and served in their naval aviation division as a pilot. In his first year of service he became entangled in a Mandalorian attack. During the battle, he prevented a missile attack on the civilian spaceport in New Aldera by using his own starfighter as a shield. He survived but was seriously injured in the crash.
After recovering, Kato was promoted for bravery. Not long after, he led a daring raid against a nearby pirate stronghold, suppressing further attacks on local shipping lanes. Duke Raoul grew closer to Kato, proud of his achievements. Until the passing of Duchess Corinna. Raoul’s depression over her loss made him irrational. He lashed out at his children and became distant. Kato’s eldest brother Raoul II assumed many of their father’s professional and political duties.
No longer bound to New Alderaan for his mother’s sake, he left once more to become a part of something greater.

APPEARANCE
A product of good genes and military fitness regimens. Kato is often effortlessly put together. His poise can come off as intimidating on first impression but beneath the stiff officer posture is a set of gentle eyes and a genuine smile. He takes his position very seriously and is almost always seen in public wearing his service uniform or formal naval dress uniform. He only allows himself to fully relax and unwind behind closed doors or on secluded holidays.

PERSONALITY
Kato lives as a gentleman with high regard for honor and chivalry, in line with his aristocratic bloodline. He maintains a poised personality, slow to anger with an emphasis on grace and self-control.
He admires the complexity of emotion; viewing emotional expression as a manifestation of the living force. He is a lover of art, music, poetry, and cuisine. He considers himself a romantic. However, his relationships have all been hampered by his intense focus on his military career and frequent moves around the galaxy.BELIEFS
Kato has a peculiar love for war, believing that when properly conducted, it brings out the best in individuals and societies at large. He views battle as an artform, not unlike a symphony or ballet; that a person engaged in battle is tapped into their highest potential. However, he is keenly aware of the tragedy of war and prefers to achieve victory through his opponents’ surrender rather than excessive bloodshed. He believes that, ideally, individuals should settle matters of honor in single combat.
He detests battle droids and refuses to use them. He is conflicted on the use of clones and prefers his subordinates be unique individuals with personal feelings to bring with them onto the field of battle. Kato’s respect for the soldiers under his command is frequently returned with respect and loyalty in kind. Many of his peers view this kindness, and his other proclivities, as weakness. Kato disagrees, and asks them to look at his history of victories before passing judgement.
Kato is a true believer in Imperialism. He believes that it is in the nature of all living beings to fight and wage war. Permanent peace can never be possible in such a large galaxy. In which case, the strongest should be the ones to rule the galaxy. Through his experience in his noble family he has seen that most citizens of the galaxy prefer to be controlled and protected. They even enjoy it more than total freedom, which is tantamount to chaos.
When it comes to the force, his philosophy is that the force flows in rhythm. It advances and evolves only by momentum and change. Stagnancy is a denial of duty to fulfill the will of the force. Unlike Jedi he holds deep attachments and loyalty to his friends, family, and comrades over any religious order. Unlike Sith he avoids aggression and admires self-sacrifice. He is devoid of fanaticism or sadism. His logical outlook supersedes religious doctrine.

STRENGTHS
Gifted Strategist
Kato is a military strategist. He is keenly observant and perceptive. He utilizes intelligence and psychological inferences to out maneuver his opponents. He prizes flexibility, believing that the ability to adapt quickly is the key to success, even if it breaks tactical protocol.
Silver-tongued
His noble upbringing and extensive prep schooling has gifted Kato a talent for discourse. He claims that his rhetorical abilities are rooted in listening more than speaking.
Duelist
Kato has a deep passion for lightsaber combat, especially duels. Similar to his gift of strategy, he believes a duel is decided not by brute strength by whoever has a psychological advantage along with clarity in the force. He is a master of lightsaber forms I and II, and has very little interest in the others.
Pilot
Kato’s first dream was to become a starfighter pilot. He received advanced flight training while attending Naval War College. Since then he has continued flying, both in service of the military and in his free time. Kato finds it exhilarating and enjoys both competing in and watching races.WEAKNESSES
Self-Criticism
Due to his strict upbringing and unresolved shame regarding his family’s view of force-users, Kato is often overly critical of himself. He holds himself to high expectations and is deeply affected by mistakes and failures. He is quick to blame himself even when something is not his personal fault. He struggles to accept compliments and will be the first to rain on his own parade.
Overly Chivalrous
Some might say that victory is not as important to Kato as the manner in which he achieves victory. He is prone to let a retreating enemy flee to fight again another day instead of completing a kill. Likewise, if he knows he is defeated he would rather concede to his opponent than risk doing anything dishonorable to force a win. This leaves him open to counter-attack and exploitation by dishonorable opponents.
Suppressed Force
Kato’s skill with force combat is highly limited. He distastes flashy force abilities like acrobatics, lightning, choking, and powerful telekinesis. He almost never uses the force outside of lightsaber duels or strategic foresight. His refusal to commit to a specific aspect of the force has weakened his ability to wield the force to its full potential.
