Intent: To create an engine that explains through description of use and IC “fluff” the tradeoff of Hangar space for increased speed class through improved engines.
Development Thread: N/A
Manufacturer: Tanaka Orbital Shipyards
Model: Kaze-class Engine
Affiliation: Asahian Only
Modularity: None
Production: Mass
Material: Durasteel, Alusteel, and other engine construction materials.
Description:
The Kaze-class engine is a large and very powerful hypermatter engine initially designed by Asahian engineers to provide Asahian Ships of the Wall the ability to keep pace with their own support craft while maintaining the ability to rapidly engage or disengage with the enemy. Originally, the engine was placed on Asahian ships where most ships carry shield generators and hyperspace engines. With the advent of newer technology and the introduction to the rest of the galaxy, those spaces were cleared of the Kaze engine to install shield generators and hyperspace engines.
The Kaze engine is still in use, however, though only with standard warships (Balanced class ships). Because the traditional areas the Kaze engine took up are now given over to new technology to make Asahian ships more combat worthy and capable of hyperspace jumps, the engines had to be remodeled and placed in different areas.
Because of this, the hangar was completely gutted and the Kaze engine was installed. This allows Asahian ships to maintain a faster speed than what is considered standard at the trade off of losing all hangar capabilities. This allows Asahian ships to use their better speed to take their foes by surprise and to disengage when necessary. It also allows them to effectively keep pace with support ships and carriers while maintaining the maximum speed possible. However, because of the size of the Kaze engine and that it takes up hangar space, it is more prone to damage in combat or during boarding actions.
In essence, the Kaze engine bumps the Balanced ship class up one point on the speed chart, giving it the same speed as a support ship of the same length, while removing all Hangar space from the ship and making the engines easier to damage by increasing the size of the engines.
