- Slugger: The Keelkana II not only has fairly decent firepower for its size, but also double-layered shields, making it well-suited for slugging matches in space.
- Fast: The Keelkana II has been designed from the ground up to be very fast, having a noticeably higher than normal mass to power ratio, giving it excellent speed that often allows it to run down smaller vessels at sublight speeds.

The Keelkana II-class Pocket Star Defender is a minor redesign of the Keelkana to meet the Directorate's need for a small but powerful warship for protecting vital assets like shipyards or leading expeditionary fleets into deep space. With that in mind, the Directorate wanted a warship that was more durable than the original Keelkana. Through the use of more automation, designers were able to obtain more space for power generators to give the Keelkana more and stronger shields, making it more durable than normal for a ship its size. Other minor improvements to the Keelkana II are the additions of an Orontes Sensor Array to aid in exploration expeditions as well as a Torrential Hyperdrive booster, which combined with the Circino Nav Computer, makes it exceptionally fast in hyperspace. The few Keelkana IIs in service typically are assigned to important Directorate Battle Groups or to defending the major assets of the Directorate's member corporations and groups.
