Strengths:
+ A combination of agility, small-size, and the sensor baffling features of its electronic warfare suite make the Fencer hard to target at medium to long range, particularly by capital ships.
+ Resistant to ion/EMP attacks.
Weaknesses:
- Even in comparison to other interceptors in its class, the Fencer is lightly armed, lacking launchers or external hardpoints. This limits its effectiveness against large capital ships. It is built to do one thing, to eliminate hostile fighters and other small vessels.
- The Fencer’s light armor provides little protection for anything aside from debris, shrapnel, and small arms fire. Once its shields are down, it becomes vulnerable to large-scale kinetic attacks.
Description:
The KF-1 Fencer is an autonomous fighter drone, built to fulfill the roles of interceptor and escort against enemy fighters and other small vessels like dropships and gunboats. It is the KSA’s first mass produced original design, created as part of Kiribian military’s effort to cycle out its stock of recently purchased export items from frontline use.
As opposed to building a pure glass cannon, some offensive firepower has been traded for increased survivability in an era where potent anti-fighter countermeasures are commonplace. The Fencer uses a Phantom Jammer to reduce its signature from targeting by hostiles. More offensively, this electronic suite is used to jam targets to cripple their targeting and communications during combat.
Taking inspiration from the T-70 X-wing favored by the Galactic Alliance, the Fencer employs a turreted rapid fire blaster cannon mounted on the underside of the fuselage, based off of the model used by the U-Wing. While not as powerful as its primary armament, a Vespa auto-ripper, the blaster cannon is still effective against enemy fighters and small vehicles with sustained fire, and for downing incoming missiles and other projectiles.
As a weight-saving measure, the chassis and much of the hull of the Fencer is built from the aluminum alloy agrinium instead of the usual material of durasteel, then covered by a thin sheeting of Ajax laminate armor. Adequate for protection against sharpnel, small debris, and small arms fire, but not much else. While offering little protection against physical attacks, the laminate armor does help improve the Fencer's resistance to EMPs and ion attacks.
Two variants of the Fencer are being produced, a standard model for export, and more modular “Kai” (KF-01B) variant produced with an integrated bio-comm module and the option to swap out the blaster cannon for a Deimos (Class I) positron cannon between sorties.
