“Look I’m just saying if you want to sit this one out I understand.”

“I’m fine.”

Sabrina was sitting inside the police speeder next to her partner Detective Jason Albright. Jason was currently looking at her but she had her head facing out towards the alleyway. He was concerned that investigating a missing persons case might be a struggle, considering her own daughter went missing years ago. If only he or anybody else understood that this case didn’t make her think about her daughter. She was always thinking about her daughter, every second of every day. The case made do difference.

Nothing did.

The proof was in her failing marriage. Her husband barely had three words to say to her these days and spent most of his time with a woman he didn’t think Sabrina knew about. Everything had fallen to pieces when they lost their daughter.

“Remind me who this guy is?”

“His name is Nej Tane. He’s a petty criminal, never really made it up with the big wigs. But he keeps his ears open and often hears thing we don’t.”

“I see. And you think he’s just going to give us information?”

“Well after some … persuading..”

Jason grinned at her and Sabrina rolled her eyes. Her brute of a partner loved to do the bad cop good cop routine.

Nej was backed out onto the street, outside of the location that they were staking out. He was backed out by the front door by four men- backed out of course, with a blaster in his stomach. Nej had his hands up, the rain pitter-pattering on his leather jacket. He kept a smug grin, exchanging words that the detectives couldn't hear beyond the rainfall, only bits and pieces.

"....Imperials you know how..." He laughed. And only he laughed. Nobody else did.

"I'll get your..."

He stopped, as the four men surrounding him grew irritated, one of them, a Zabrak, grew increasingly irritated. He pointed at Nej, and the man with the blaster pulled off, and was aiming at his face-

That's when Nej kicked him in the nuts, and squared off. A mean right hook sent the man with the gun toppling over. He drew his own blaster while the two went for theirs, popping both of them in the chest in a frightening display of his quickdraw prowess.

He shouted.

"That's what you get, nobody messes with Nej-"

The Zabrak he forgot about wrapped his arms Nej, and tackled him- hard. And carried him, and carried him, and carried him... right across the hood of a speeder. A speeder occupied by two people. While Nej and the Zabrak were tussling, they both stopped, turned- and went wide eyed.

Cops.

And in the brief pause, Nej punched the Zabrak square in the jewels, and took off, preparing to run.

Well this certainly wasn’t what either cap had been expecting. A fight broke out right on top of the speeder.

“Grab him!”

Jason and Sabrina flung themselves out of the speeder and towards the fighting males. Sabrina pulled the Zabraks hands behind his back and slapped on some cuffs. Meanwhile Jason attempted to rugby tackle the human.

“We just want to talk to you!”

Meanwhile at the speeder Sabrina was trying to figure out what the fight was about.

Talking? No, no, nonononnonono.

Cops didn't want to talk. They never wanted to just "talk". They always used that line, and then he'd be in jail, and have to break out, or worse, do actual time.

Nej narrowly dodged the other Detective's attempt at a grab, twisting and jerking his body to avoid being ganked and taken into cuffs. He turned and laughed his ass off, flipping off the detective, before he stumbled over some trash, and fell to the ground anyways. Losing his momentum, he scrambled to his feet, trying to keep running...

Sabrina had the Zabrek in the speeder, whose backseat did not open from the inside so criminals could stay detained. Unfortunately her partner wasn’t having as much luck.

Sabrina could see the chain of events that was about to unfold as her partner went to rugby tackle the other guy. She ran forward and sure enough the tackle failed but the criminal went down anyway. He was scrambling to his feet when suddenly a blaster was pointed at his face. She held the weapon straight but really didn’t want to shoot the guy. As far as she could tell he hadn’t done anything wrong. At least not today.

“Stop! We don’t want you Nej. We want information on the missing women.”

Jason had got to hit feet and was cursing and dabbing at his nose, which had started to bleed in the fall.

“I say we take him in! Look what he did to my face!”

“You’ll live.”

Women?

That made Nej turn around, and put his hands up. He put his hands on his hips after a while of not being cuffed or shot, catching his breath.

"Girls? What girls? I don't deal with people man, that's Empire stuff, not me."

Well. At least, he didn't believe he did. Now he was in a whole other business- Nej was a weapons smuggler, drug smuggler... ship smuggler... tools smuggler... precious metals smuggler... impersonator.... serial liar... serial womanizer.

But a slaver?

The nerve!

When he raised his arms she lowered her weapon and eventually put it back in the holster.

“I know you aren’t involved. We just thought maybe you saw something. They were working girls.”

Being a prostitute was a dangerous job, but these women deserved safety just like everybody else.

“Here. Take a look at their pictures. Maybe you know some of their John’s? Or where they worked?”

She held out a datapad with pictures of eight missing women.

Nej peaked over her shoulder, at the still smoldering dead guys behind her.

Not his problem, right? Didn't seem to care about that. Must've been a big case. Big investigation.

Nej wasn't a frequenter of those establishments, but he knew the girls. In the nicest way possible, everyone did.

"Most of them worked upper class places near the top. Would be flown up for big parties, eye candy and stuff. Never could aff- Never did want to do anything that stuff."

Sabrina glanced at her partner. They were looking for a high roller, which was not currently an angle the investigation had considered.

“Was there any one person who seemed to extremely want to do with that stuff? Maybe someone who made the girls feel uneasy?”

Nej Tane Nej Tane

"Take your pick. It's the who's who of rich assholes- guys who can afford whatever they want. Poor girls probably had to do some weird stuff, you know? Maybe one of them found out something or whatever."

Nej looked between the two detectives, feet slowly moving backwards...

Sabrina could tell Nej was ready to go and she couldn’t blame him. He probably didn’t want anybody to see him talking to the cops.

“Thank you Mr. Tane. We will be in touch.”

She walked back over to her partner, who scowled.

“Aren’t you going to arrest him? Look at my face!”

“It looks better that way.”
