- The KS-5 and its rifle mod are designed to be able to be used by other beings by adding a second trigger and the ability to lock the one not used, though it remains advantageous for Geonosians due to its heavy weight working best for stronger beings. Wookies, Trandoshans, or enhanced organics likely would also not be as bothered by the weight issue.
- As a sonic weapon, the KS-5 is more capable of bypassing traditional armor such as armorweave or worn durasteel. Instead of attempting to directly damage materials, it attempts to rupture the internal structures of what it hits causing organ damage. As a result, it is most effective against organic beings. Though this still works well on the internal components of droids or machinery. While this is its design, both the KS-5 and its rifle mod are quite capable of causing physical destruction to whatever they directly hit, shaking them apart. As a result anything that has multiple components is far more in danger then simply a solid steel wall. But unlike blaster and slugthrower alternatives, the sonic technology is at a disadvantage where it won’t be able to simply keep going if the first target is weak. An unarmed and an armored human body will both stop the sonic blast from keeping going, even if they both die the same.
- The KS-5 has a rifle modification called the KS-5R or KS-5 Rifle mod that allows it greater range and power, at the cost of more size and recoil.
- They do possess a stun capability, but its reliability is not as high as most blaster versions due to the difference between enough to kill and enough to simply knock out. What could knock one unconscious could kill another, they have settings for this, but this leaves user error as a noticeable hazard.
- Due to being a sonic blaster, instead of ripping or burning through the target, it essentially rapidly shakes it causing rupturing of organs and systems. This also allows it to essentially bypass most types of worn armor.
- Both versions are rather destructive, but the more moving parts something has, the more destructive they can be. This is why they work best on organics. But will still be fairly destructive to most forms of armor or machinery. The rifle mod is noticeably more capable of this, mostly noticed when attempting to destroy vehicles or armor.
- The rifle mod has a better range than its normal version.
- Can be used by both geonosians and other species unlike its original.
- Much more difficult to defend against using weapons like lightsabers or worn physical shields, as their impact essentially still hits. Pressing an individual to evade instead of defend.
- Optional, but questionable, stun setting.
- The sonic explosion on impact can cause serious issues with communication and hearing of those nearby the impact zone.
- Large enough to be two handed.
- Anyone using a sonic blaster, especially at short ranges, should probably be wearing ear protection, as while most of the damage is in the target they are not quite results. This can cause hearing damage over extended use. It can also surprise first time users.
- The KS-5 and its rifle version are both fairly heavy, these are not advised for small beings or droids to use. And would be more difficult to manage when injured.
- Both versions are mostly incapable of hitting multiple unconnected targets as they dissipate into the target on impact, unlike slugs or blasters which are designed to keep going.
- Though the rate of fire of the rifle mod is the same as its regular version, its recoil is higher, this can result in a lower rate of fire regardless of the weapons capability.
- Stun capability is not always reliable as it relies on the user making an educated guess how much power would knock out as opposed to simply injure or kill their target. It is most commonly set at a rating which causes disorientation, ear pain, and sickness instead of outright unconsciousness.
- Some forms of shielding are noticeable more capable of defending against sonic based weaponry.
- Since the sonic blasters are not as focused as normal blasters or slugs, bigger targets and thicker non-moving plates are harder to damage or take down. While a sonic blaster is very effective against an armored soldier, they may be proportionally much less effective per shot against massive creatures or vehicles that an equivalent blaster might be able to pierce.
The KS-5 and KS-5R are both easy to make models of Sonic Blasters that are a rather old technology. They release a ball of contained sonic energy that essentially creates a sonic explosion on impact with much energy or matter. This is often enough to kill most organics regardless of where it hits or if they are wearing physical armor, as instead of simply cutting through, it ruptures organs and violently shakes things apart. These weapons are hard to defend against, though certainly not impossible. As some energy shields are capable of handling sonic weaponry much better than material defenses. Additionally, they are not as capable of getting multiple targets as effectively as other weaponry. As both an advantage and a disadvantage, the sheer noise of the impact is often quite unpleasant if not outright damaging over time. And can cause issues with communication or hearing loss if not properly protected. Most using the weapon need to keep their distance or have hearing protection available. The weapon additionally is not light, and even its smaller sized normal version can be a bit of an irritation to carry around for most beings, as both resemble the weight of a rifle. While able to be two-handed by most species, it is obvious this was meant to be used in a single hand. As a result, it is best used by beings with higher strength levels, or who can get used to the gripping of the weapon.
