Lady And The Merc?

Annaj
Ambassador Building
While on Annaj to speak with The Free Colonies for setting up a long running contract for protection, another potentially lucrative opportunity came up that Arlan could not help but make a detour to investigate before leaving the planet. Lady Kay, one of the colonies high ranking officials, had reached out about perhaps hiring The Carrion Company to provide bodyguards for herself in light of recent events. While Arlan did not know all of the details and why exactly she would need personal protection, Leon had mentioned the the colonies as they were admitted to having to little to no military might. Perhaps not wanting to detract from the organization as a whole Lady Kay had opted to outsource her protection, a very proactive approach Arlan had thought, and had turned to the newest military assets of the colonies in hopes of finding that protection. Hoping to do a favor for his new clients, Arlan headed towards the ambassador building posthaste in hopes of meeting Lady Kay personally and hashing out the details of what she wanted in a bodyguard.

Arriving at the building was no great feat, being prominently featured close to where Arlan was already, and upon entering he could already smell the stench of politicians in the air. Arlan had known he would need to get used to dealing with diplomats and the like in future months considering all the high profile clients the company was signing with, but he still couldn't help but dislike politicians. Approaching the desk which was headed by a rather mousy looking secretary instead of a droid like you'd find in most places these days, Arlan leaned forwards and spoke in a rather brash voice. "Excuse me. Name's Arlan, I'm here to speak with Lady Kay." Then nothing more. He believed she was expecting him, and if not she at least knew who he was and why he would come to her. All he could do is wait at this point.

Kay received the notification that her guest [member="Arlan Zy'rosh"] had arrived. Instead of just asking him to be sent in, she got up from her desk and walked over to the door, opening it to greet him. It wasn't hard to spot Arlan. "Thank you for coming. Please, come inside." She stepped to the side to let him pass and then closed the door behind them, gesturing for him to take a seat on one of the comfy chairs. Kay's office didn't have a desk. She had a coffee table, small sofa and a few big comfy chairs, perfect for drinking tea in.

She sat herself down and grabbed one of her datapads. "Now, as we discussed briefly, I'm looking for a bodyguard. I'm not your average, stuffy politician. I spend some of my time in Hutt space executing missions to free slaves. Sometimes I am just there to spy and gather information for my next hit on them. I've had some high bounties on me, as well as low ones, and there is never a shortage of them trying to bring me in. Yes I do often go out to diplomatic meetings, but a lot of the times they are in heavy combat zones. I can be reckless at times and very stubborn. So I'll need someone that knows how to spot a threat and at times....even force me out of a situation that I'm too stubborn to get out of. Sometimes my ambition blinds me until it is too late." Everyone has their faults. And hers gets her into trouble at times.

Arlan had always known diplomats and politicians to be of a similar, very predictable, breed. So you could imagine Arlan's surprise when a woman he presumed to be a stuck up pencil pusher actually got up to let him in instead of allowing the secretary to do it Arlan liked that fact, more than he let on, and found it amusing that despite all he had been through the Galaxy still found ways to catch him off guard. Following suite, Arlan stepped inside the office and walked over to a chair taking a seat. He would set there silently, taking in all Lady Kay had to say on the matters of employment that had brought Arlan to the office on this day. From what she said the woman lived a pretty full life, one not hindered by social norms and acceptability, so it was only natural for her to need some added protection for future ventures. Though the deal was far from sealed Arlan did believe The Carrion Company had just the sort of men needed for the position she needed filled.

"You seem to be rather adventurous, I'm impressed." Arlan smirked and he leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms. "I can't call myself a freedom fighter or anything like that, but I've been in similar situations before. I know the sort of person needed to go into that mess and keep a cool head." Arlan nodded in agreement with his own words. "There are plenty of groups you can hire bodyguards from, plenty that would do you well, but if you are looking for more than a stooge to shoot at things you need a Carrion by your side. One of my boys can keep you safe and even help you with what you need done, not many others can claim to do that with any sort of quality." Then Arlan would wait knowing full well that saying too much to soon would leave him with little to refute any arguments Lady Kay made against his reasoning.

"Adventurous? Maybe. Some people say that I'm naive to think that I could end slavery, but I know that it'll never happen in my lifetime. But that doesn't mean that those within it don't deserve a chance at freedom." She thought about the rest that [member="Arlan Zy'rosh"] had spoken of and it piqued her interest that he was already thinking on who could work along beside her. That was a good start. "And this individual that you are thinking of, does he have much battle experience? And I don't mean just being a front line soldier, but a strategist?" Kay needed someone that could see from many different angles in a situation, and her brother was more than happy to pay for it. Thankfully.

Lady Kay seemed to know her own limitation well, a rare trait for the denizens of the Galaxy. Her needing a bodyguard was the direct result in her understanding her faults and trying to overcome this as best as possible and, while he had plenty of good men, Arlan knew it would take a rather exceptional individual to be able to keep up with this client's needs. Out of all the people he had working for him there were few he knew would actually be able to conduct themselves in a satisfactory manner for the length of time they would be serving Lady Kay. The most prominent choice would be of course be Leon. Quiet, composes, and loyal to a fault. He may well have been a little on the strange side, being from a planet with no technological advancements, but a better bodyguard there were none. The only problem with that was how busy he was at the moment. Near every job that came through the company these days had Leon on it's roster.

"Well, I have several men that would suit your needs." Arlan said as he nodded and smiled. "A Keshiri that buts most other mercenaries in the galaxy to shame. I don't think you could do better than him, and if things are pressing then me." Arlan leaned back. "I may be in a command role most of the time now but I'm a merc no doubt about it. If you need top notch protection I'd be glad to help out."

Kauy blinked in surprise. Was [member="Arlan Zy'rosh"] offering himself up for the job? If that's the case, then it was indeed unexpected. Of course who would turn down the head of such a company like Carrion? Would he really be up for it? Or would she just have different bodyguards at any given time? More than likely it was the latter. "Thank you, Arlan. I would be most grateful for your protection and advice. At times I am sent in for negotiations with....not so favourable people. More and more planets are aligning themselves with my brother's government, so I am often sent in as the welcome wagon. So far everything has gone smoothly. But I think that it would put my brother [member="James Justice"] at greater ease if he knew that I wasn't going unprepared for the worst., instead of preparing for the best."

She thought back on her recent meeting with one of the bounty hunters that had caught her. She wanted her things returned and had only brought one of her friends with her. It didn't take long however for them to be outnumbered 6-2. The Herglic bounty hunter advised her that she needed more bodyguards, so she was doing just that. Tensions were building in various parts of the Galaxy and it wasn't as though her brother stayed clear from trouble either. Any one of his enemies could ambush her out of spite for him, and she didn't want to become a hostage to be blackmailed with.

Arlan listened intently, his eyes transfixed upon the woman as she spoke. Such conviction came from her words as she bore the truth of her adventures for Arlan to see. Of course he had known about some of these dealings, being a mercenary meant staying connected to the bounty hunting trade if only in part, but Arlan was still impressed to hear the story from it's source. A few nods would emanate from the man as he silently agreed with what Lady Kay had to saying knowing full well the needs one has for protection in the Galaxy as it is toady. With the rise of The Free Colonies a shift in power had begun to slowly taken place in certain sectors of the Galaxy and always there are those that seek to capitalize on that fact. A person in a position of high regard is an easy target for the opportunist, and Lady Kay would certainly look to be a promising mark to the unscrupulous.

"I'll admit this much to you. When I first heard of your brother's fledgling government I had my reservations. Most people knew his as a pirate, many still do, and that sort makes a bad leader." Arlan spoke frankly. "But now, looking back at all that has been done, I can say I was wrong about him and his organization. If I didn't feel like he was trying to do good I certainly wouldn't have signed with him on any level. However; there are still many that disagree with that sentiment. Many that would wish to do harm to him and in turn you. You need to best protection you can get, and you'll get no better than a Carrion." His words were direct and harsh, but carrying truth. Arlan looked to Lady Kay and said a final piece. "If you hire us you'll have my best, and if they are busy you'll have me. That I can promise."

His words did have weight. She was fully aware of the side effects of a government growing in size and popularity. But Kay was there to help her brother, just as he had helped her when she was fired from the Republic government. They always did favours back and forth. It was their way and how their friendship was formed.

Kay held out her hand to [member="Arlan Zy'rosh"] "Thank you, Arlan. If my brother already has a contract with you, then we can just add myself to it as well. I'm sure that he'll greatly appreciate what you and Carrion can provide for us. And so will I."

From Arlan's perspective things seemed to have concluded for the most part it was good to see that Lady Kay was willing to consider his offer at the very least. The fact was, Arlan did already have a contract with the colonies so taking on the protection of Lady Kay was already more or less his concern anyway. This meeting had been part formality and part trying to convince Lady Kay to allow his men to accompany her without any hassle. Thankfully she had basically just agreed to it all and that was a huge relief for Arlan, even so much as to prompt a sigh as he rose from his chair. Looking across the table Arlan would smile halfheartedly and nod before extending his hand for a proper shake to seal their agreement. Of course it didn't actually mean anything more than a show of trust, paperwork would have to be drawn up and signed later, but such gestures were important to Arlan and how he did business.

"Well my Lady, it looks like we are in business." Arlan spoke as he ran his free hand through his hair. "I look forward to seeing more of you in the future. If only all my meeting could go so smoothly."

She gave him a small smile and nod as he shook her hand, hoping that it would put her brother more at ease. But what would put him more at ease would be if she didn't get herself into trouble. Yet she couldn't help it and it wasn't as though she did so on purpose.

"Yes, well I'm sure that this is just the calm before the storm. That's how it always go. But I look forward to meeting your employees and working with all of you."

Kay got to her feet so that she could show him out. If he had nothing else to add then their meeting had come to a successful end.

It was over now, thankfully, and things could now continue down their destined paths. Arlan would provide security details for his elegant new client, along with assisting The Free Colonies themselves with military operations, and prosperity would reign for the Carrion. It had been a long trek form the simple two man operation it had been just a few short years ago to the contracting out to some of the most formidable forces in the Galaxy, yet Arlan still felt the smallness of his organization strangling him. Without people like Lady Kay and Mr. Justice in their corner the future of The Carrion Company was certainly a bleak one. Most of that had been avoided now yet the ever growing need to expand was an ever present factor for Arlan and the others within his ranks. Another step to securing the safety of their new home had been taken here today, even if few knew it, and for that Arlan was grateful.

"Anytime you wish to visit us on Rutan I can arrange it." Arlan spoke as he turned towards the door. "We all look forward to a long and healthy arrangement.

Kay smiled a little and nodded. "I would like that very much. I'm always a traveller, never in any one place for long. I've gone to many different places in the Galaxy, though I don't believe that I've been to Rutan yet. Perhaps one of these days I'll visit and see how you train your employees. Maybe pick up a few pointers for myself."

Her late husband taught her a few things, though he didn't want her to be involved in fighting. Her job was to prevent them or heal him and his comrades afterwards. It was fine as she always had him for protection. But now she went through bodyguards like a little kid went through clothes. They never stick around for long. Maybe now it'll be different.
