Law and Order in Chaos

I've been considering the creation of a second character as I smooth out some wrinkles and put the finishing touches on this one, but that's actually dependent on how exactly law and order functions in roleplay. So...

Are there any set laws that individual factions have put into effect?

Do laws span a faction's entire territory, or are they based in specific systems or planets? Or a mixture?

Where could I get more information about said laws?

How are crimes solved, and criminals caught? Is this brushed over to any extent?

Do trials take place in Chaos?

Are bounty hunters and military the closest thing to law enforcement here?

How do law enforcement jurisdictions work? Does it tend to be planetary, based in systems, or territory-spanning?

Lastly, is there really any place for a detective in chaos? Do factions even employ these types of characters?

You would have to ask each individual major faction, I assume there are some, though.

Depends on the faction. I'm sure some of the more "democratic" factions permit planet-based laws as well as faction-spanning ones, too. I know the Galactic Alliance offers some leeway for planets there.

Each faction (major faction) placed on the map.

Again, this depends on the faction, the crime, how willing criminals are to being caught, etc. I'd say it gets brushed over unless the person writing the criminal is willing to be taken in.

Every so often, yes. I made a character ( [member="Jen Law"] ) specifically to act as a judge in one such trial... but considering that pretty much became a non-event, I'd venture closer to "no" than "yes". It really relies on interest, as much as anything.

I'd say this wildly varies from faction-to-faction, but I'd assume the military can act as law enforcement in most situations in factions. Bounty hunters are not law enforcement - they're people paid a bid to retrieve a bounty, different than actual law enforcement. Bounty hunters can, technically, operate outside of the law - it's why law enforcement pays them to do what red tape won't allow them to do.

Probably leaning towards a combination of all three, though - again - this depends on the faction.

I would go pitch that to a faction if you want their answer, but I don't think you should rely on them to give you that opportunity. Most focus tends to be on military, however, but I'm sure you can find that niche.

In a nutshell, pretty much each Faction has their own "method" of law and order for their own territory. Best idea is, if you want, pick a Faction and then go about creating a system of law enforcement to work within their perimeters.

Have fun with it!

Preciate the help. I guess if I'd like to go that route, there'd be a lot of reaching out to do. Of course, a P.I. isn't too far off.

This character is an ex-Coruscanti cop who now works in the Sulon law enforcement force. We also have a sheriff-ish! ([member="Gabriel Sionoma"]). So GA definitely has some space/infrastructure to fit your guy into.

As for doing actual police work/detective work, you're probably going to have begin by crafting stories of your own and bring people in.

As others have said, military (and often Jedi/FU) serve as the law-enforcing group of people for any given faction on the map.

You're going to have to carve out your niche, pretty much.

I uh, think I may be the only, or at least first, person to bring another player to Trial. My company builds TIE fighters and other things. Another player copied a bunch of my stuff and in some cases had even plagiarized parts of my tech articles. Rather than report the posts for plagiarism I went around and lobbied most of the major factions and had a Copyright trial over my IP (intellectual property). So I got a cease and desist order sent first and when the other party refused we choose the venue of his companies HQ (the faction where that planet resided) to be the venue for the case. What allowed the case to work is that I got all the other major factions of the time to ICly state that they would have reciprocity agreements with the others. So I ended up winning the case, and every major faction on the board at that time boycotted his company until he made IC payments as compensation to me. Dropped him 1-2 Tiers in the company rank and I had fun getting to RP a civil trial.
