Leaders and...leaders

Gilamar Skirata

The most important step is always the next one
Yup that grammar in the title is accurate. Today I want to talk about "Leaders" and "leaders". What I've seen far too often on this board are factions, factions that are built up to be these grand governments holding billions, even trillions of peoples. They say they have councils, and government officials, and this and that, and then the ones going around making IC decisions for these factions, meeting other Leaders of factions are these...leaders.

Now what is the difference from a Leader and a leader? A Leader, in my mind at least, is the person who should be, but as is the case on this board, usually not, the In Character leader of said faction. That would be like the Mand'alor or the Lord/Lady Protector in the Mandalorian and Omega Protectorate factions respectively. A leader, is a character, who while holding some sway in each faction and holds a decent amount of IC power, is the ACTUAL leader of the faction, OOC and IC, for whatever reasons, despite said faction having a position in their government that should be holding true power. These leaders go around making IC dealings with other Leaders and leaders. For example, and I'm not bashing y'all for this. A meeting between the Sith Empire (Manda bless your soul) and the Republic. Realistically, an ideal meeting would be with the Leader of the Sith, the Emperor and the Chancellor/Vice Chancellor and a few Jedi Masters for protection. However, what actually happens is the Grandmaster of the Jedi order, a religious body, and sometimes soldier farm of the Republic. Leader and leader contact. While I understand that most of that faction's writers are Jedi, what it LOOKS like, at least in the mind of Gilamar Skirata is that the Jedi have usurped the Republic's government and are one step away from staging a coup. Hence his distrust of the Jedi with them leading the charge on all these "Land grabbing" actions that have brought them to his doorstep.

Now, I know this isn't what they want to be portrayed as and they are not the only faction that does this. Now. This is not to say factions can't have representatives, as there is at least one faction that has a NPC Leader and these steps are needed. But often in these cases with such factions that have leaders and not Leaders taking on In Character decisions for entire governments, sometimes there is backlash and the people who put time and effort into writing characters that should be doing these threads is brought to nothing. It creates a sense of powerlessness for these characters. As if...they don't actually matter [Though great writers and great sports will use this to their advantage while writing ;) ]
This is just my opinion. I want to hear yours.

[member="Gilamar Skirata"] - I hold a pretty similar view on this matter.

In regards to the talks between the Republic and the Mandalorians... My (senator) character actually requested negotiations when the Mandalorians came to Coruscant, but the Mandalorian in-charge (Mia-something) decided she'd only speak to the Chancellor (who wasn't active) and Grandmaster along with other Jedi Masters. So you're right in that the Jedi seems to have usurped the Republic's government.

Staging of the coup by the Jedi wouldn't even be necessary since they already hold 100% of the Republic's power.

Well one of the key problems between these leader and Leaders and their relations with people is that quite honestly no one wants to be a pencil pusher who's job is the essential governance and management of complicated economic policies that most people don't understand. I mean the big selling point of being in the republic is being a Jedi. Not the Greatly Esteemed Represented and Right Honorable Minister of the Department of Foreign Policy. poodoo the title is a mouthful, so you know the job is likely a borefest. And since we don't fill these position in the RP enough with willing people, so the Jedi or the other force users themselves who must negotiate on behalf of the faction.

It was just a suggestion to give them real legitimacy. I think I've seen at least two threads where they were outright denied because they weren't the actual "pencil pusher" of the Republic. As my roommate would say, "Leaders and countries should be forged by blood and iron." ;)

But again, this was not directed soley at the Republic, but at all factions that fall to this sort of system

That is exactly why I left the Republic. People do want to fill those "boring" roles, they just can't do so enough because Big Brother Jedi Order is constantly calling the shots. Isn't it supposed to be the other way around? There's no mutuality.

What I learned from this thread:
  • Nobody knows who is charge of the Republic Faction
  • The separation of IC information and OOC information is difficult thing to balance

This is what i was taught as a kid: Leadership is the art of influencing human behavior to achieve a goal in the manner desired by the leader.

If the strongest leadership is the jedi for the republic, then let a jedi grandmaster be a chancellor of the republic.
