The Legions are the military arm of the Azure Imperium, a combined arms force that unifies both the Naval, Marine and ground-based units of the military into one fighting force. The Legions emphasis discipline, focusing on tactics which allow them to take and secure territory before pushing on, presenting a solid front to their opponents, an implacable advance that can goad them into hasty actions.

  • The Military is divided into Legions, each of which is a complete army or fleet. The commanders of the legions, the Legates, form the war-council, with the job of maintaining the Legions readiness and preparedness to fight, as well as advising the Emperor and Senate on military matters. Under the constitution of the Azure Imperium, the Legions answer directly to the Emperor, and act as the basis for his power, counterbalancing the Senate’s control of finances and lawmaking. • Legate Imperius: The Commander of 2 or 3 Legions, and the man or woman who would be tasked with a tactical objective by the Praetor

  • Legate Legiones: The Commander of an individual Legion, these are the officers who have shown their mettle and are trusted to command the Empire’s mailed fist, and more importantly trusted not to use it. The Legates are appointed and selected by the emperor himself.

  • Centurion: Sub commanders who commanded the cohorts or subunits within a Legion. Within the fleet, the Centurions are the commanders of specific ships, in the army, they will command Cohorts of troops.

Any non-citizen, upon completing their first tour of service, is automatically made a citizen of the Azure Imperium. To become an officer in the Legions, you have to either be promoted from the ranks and given a spot in Officer training or come in from the outside with a university degree. In special cases, the Emperor can appoint an officer to any rank if he believes that they have earned the position.

  • Dogma/Doctrines: Loyalty to the Emperor and Imperium. Acceptable casualties are a myth, either civilians or ours if a life has to be spent making it mean something. Never waste a life, never leave a man behind.

  • Curios: Upon promotion to Munifex each Legionnaire is given a hand cast silver Aquilla pin, the same pin the lowest ranked Munifex has, or the highest ranked Praetor has. Even the Emperor wears his pin proudly at all times if nothing else.

  • Goals: The Protection of the Azure Imperium, and to act as their mailed fist outside the territory if needed.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The role of the military in the Azure Imperium was settled during the long journey through the void, the headlong exodus from their home to the end point of their path. The military kept the ships running, providing a touch of security and discipline to the terrified citizens. It wasn't that they performed great feats of heroism, but the focus on activity, coupled with the fact that the military was always doing something, fixing the ships, cleaning the decks, bustling back and forward. It might have all been busywork but it proved tantalising to the frightened citizens, many of whom found their way into the ranks.

Even after their arrival, the military was everywhere, building roads and infrastructure, helping set up homesteads and farms, chase down lost sheep and shipping out water to the populations who’s pipes had a catastrophe. They were the largest organised force on the planet, and the emperor made good use of that. It didn’t matter that there were no enemies nearby, that their existence was supposed to be peaceful, the military had so many other uses that people kept coming back to them, kept recruitment high. And it’s a good thing that it did.

So far away from the order and security provided by the fledgeling Republic, pirates, warlords and all manner of cruel and vicious individuals plied the intergalactic spaceways. The military was soon called upon the protect the world against the depredations of pirates, cruising into the system looking for an easy mark. Gregory Azure’s, the first Azure Emperor, foresight in forcing the military to build a local defence force proved to be well founded as the pirates, expecting an easy colony found themselves contending with warships. Those pirates got away but never again was the solemn vow of the military, one they intended to keep. Warships stared carrying a marine complement, as the Legions pounced on the next pirate ships, capturing them before deploying forces outside the system to attack nearby pirate bases. The larger than expected military of the Azure Imperium attracted attention, it was always bound to. While some planets looked to them for protection, willing to pay to have the Azure Imperium assist them with their own pirate problems, still others saw them as a threat. The first test of the Imperial military was when a nearby system invaded the Imperiums home. This was a dark time for the military, for despite their best efforts they found themselves outclassed and outfought by a military possessing force wielders. Although the Church eventually brought it’s own Force users to bear the military had learned it’s lesson. Thereafter the Military made sure to integrate force users, both from the Church and those who had chosen not to join the church, into its ranks.

Since then, the military has remained one of the pillars upon which the Azure Imperium was built, providing the same stability and security to the Imperium that it always had from those first days on the refugee ships.

The Legions

There are two types of legion, the Legio Terra (Army) and the Legio Astro (Navy). Each Legion of the Legio Terra is made up of 5000 Legionnaires divided between 10 Cohorts. One of these cohorts is a support cohort, one of these will be a tank and artillery cohort. The specific make up of each legion was dependant on the legions purpose, but every Legionnaire's basic training was to be a soldier first and specialist second, and every one of them was able to pick up a rifle and engage in battle.

The legions of the Legio Astra consisted of a fleet, Centurions were given command of a ship, but a Prefect was either the commander of a Star Destroyer or a squadron/cohort of smaller ships. Only those of Tribune rank or higher were allowed to command the larger capital ships. A Legion was generally made of Star Destroyers and their escorts, while an Imperial Legion or Grand Fleet would be commanded from a 5km battleship.

Larger Forces

The Legion was the basic building block of an army or fleet, just as the cohort was the basic building block of the Legion. Most regions of the planet had 2 or 3 Legions assigned to them, forming an Imperial Legion, the leader of whom, the Imperial Legate, acted as the Emperor’s governor in the area (working beside the local government). A group of Imperial Legions formed a field or Grand Army which was commanded by a Praetor. The Praetor’s normally remained in the capital as part o the general staff, only leaving to drill their troops, or when the war required it.
