Let's Get Down to Business

Aodh keenly watched the passing waves as they descended to the surface of the Mandalorian world, Phindar. The ocean was still a realtively interesting sight to the new Padawan, as due to his life on Coruscant, he hadn't seen an ocean in over a decade. "Well...That's one hell of a sight if I do say so myself. Y'said ya' set up this place yerself'?" Aodh cordially asked.

He swung himself off of the chair he was resting in to move over towards the window. It was going to be a very interesting day, with what he assumed was his training most likely starting soon. The only thoughts on his mind was what Seraphina would teach him.

The pinkish Twi'lek leaned forward, her feet dangling off the edge of the lounge chair as she looked out past Aodh through the window herself, gazing at the crystal clear water that stretched off into the distance. She smiled, knowing that she had chosen the perfect place to build her home - isolated and serene, the ideal place for training without the worry of prying eyes and interruptions. If she was to take on a student outside of the Jedi Order, she was going to do so in secrecy. The world needn't know she was training a Padawan, mostly for his own safety than her own. Unnecessary headaches bounty hunters were.

"Well, I designed it, yes. I paid a few Phindar construction companies to build it on my behalf. It would take me a lifetime to build this on my own." She smiled and laughed for a moment before standing from the chair and joining Aodh at the glass window, placing her hands behind her back and clasping them together as they both stood quietly for a minute, enjoying the peace that was brought by the calmness of the water as the structure loomed over it.

"Come." She said quietly, turning about and heading towards the inner chamber. A room further in provided a large training and meditation area. Along the outer wall were a number of makeshift dummies, intended for non-saber combat training, while a dozen or so orbital training droids rested atop a shelf, currently inactive, awaiting their next student. Sera had trained a dozen or so students, but never one that had no prior knowledge of the Force. If anything this may prove her greatest challenge, unless Aodh was a natural when it came to learning.

Sera knelt down on the soft floor, gesturing for Aodh to join next to her. "Sit. If you're to learn how to become a Jedi, you're going to learn from the beginning, like any other Padawan. And that means learning the Jedi Code, and learning the proper ways of meditation."

Aodh awkwardly scratched at the back of his neck as he entered the expansive room. "Well, you sure got the right companies to build this place. Nice digs." He appreciatively mumbled after letting out a low whistle. He looked at the dummies strewn across the outer walls, and saw a few droids neatly placed across from each other on a small wooden shelf. Aodh sat next to Seraphina cross-legged, as he took one last look at the room.

"Yeah, meditation, funny. Not gonna' happen, but if it helps the training, I'll give it a shot. So, what's this 'Jedi Code' you speak of o' wise master?" He jokingly asked.

"Oh, it's going to happen." She said, rather matter-of-fact like. "The only question is how long it takes you." Placing her hands on either knee, she drew in a deep breath, releasing it slowly. "The Jedi Code, in and of itself, is simply a series of stanzas that define the fundamental philosophy of what a Jedi is. These stanzas, and their meanings, vary in perception between different groups of Jedi, different Orders, and even individuals. Depending upon whom you ask, you may receive different insight into the so-called rules of being a Jedi."

Quietly the woman recited the code, her eyes closed, in its' fullest context, each stanza separated by a brief moment of silence.
"There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no chaos, there is harmony. There is no death, there is the Force."

Once the Twi'lek finished reciting the code, she once again opened her eyes to look directly at Aodh. "You will remember this code. You will recite it in your head until each word is emblazoned into your memory. I will impart on you the same knowledge that was delivered to me. I will also explain my own interpretations, and then I would like for you to make your own interpretation at the end of the day, and tell me what you believe the Code means. These are merely words, but words sway opinion, and opinions sway feelings. Keep that in mind."

Raising her left hand, as if she were weighing her options in a figurative manner, "The Jedi Order views the first stanza as a means of saying that one should maintain a permanent state of peace. Do not divulge raw emotions such as fear, love, and anger. It is through these emotional connections that Jedi fall to the dark side. Whether intentional or otherwise, peace is the foundation of the light side. It will also be your greatest adversary." Raising her right hand she opted to impart her own opinion. "I believe that healthy emotional connections can be observed, so long as those who practice such things abstain from embracing anger, hatred, and vengeance."

Again she raised both hands, "The second stanza is rather self explanatory, and I don't find many differing opinions on the subject. There is infinite knowledge to be gained. As a Jedi, your duty includes the necessity to always continue learning, even as a master. The third stanza relates to the first in many ways, explaining that one should not seek to harness the innate, human aspects of emotion. Never allow your frustration to blossom into folly, do not try and overcome adversaries or trials through angry determination, or hasty miscalculation." She smiled warmly, "This stanza I do believe in entirely. Allowing yourself to become overburdened by your failures or frustrations will only further discourage you."

Sera made sure to maintain eye contact with Aodh, as many might find this initiation rather boring, but this was absolutely critical to his progress. "The fourth stanza refers to the understanding that all life within the galaxy is interconnected and important. Every living being is dependent one way or another on every other living being. You must always understand this. A beggar on the street, you may give him money, but does that truly help him? Perhaps in the short term, a meal for a day, but you've not truly aided him or the galaxy. Instead of helping him to help himself, you've enabled him to continue begging. Always try to see the bigger picture. The final stanza is an understanding that one's death does not mean that life ends. In order for life to exist, so too must death. You must acknowledge and prepare for death."

After she finished explaining the Jedi Code to Aodh, Sera paused, allowing Aodh to ingest what she had just explained. "That is the Jedi Code. As I said before, it is open to interpretation. This, however, is the Jedi Way." The Twi'lek passed a datapad containing the scripture to Aodh. "You may keep this datapad as your own. Write notes in it if you wish. The Jedi Code and the Jedi Way are both saved to it. I would like for you to read them each morning. Now, read that over please, and then I will answer any questions you have so far."

On the screen displayed the following:

Jedi are the guardians of peace in the galaxy.
Jedi use their powers to defend and to protect.
Jedi respect all life, in any form.
Jedi serve others rather then ruling over them, for the good of the galaxy.
Jedi seek to improve themselves through knowledge and training.

Aodh nodded, as he turned to Seraphina, pondering his future training. "There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no chaos, there is harmony. There is no death, there is the Force." He dully recited. While at first he felt bored and disinterested, the passion and absolute authority Seraphina spoke with drew him back into the lesson. Aodh felt the urge to begin insulting the Jedi Code, as he felt that emotion itself couldn't be avoided, only to have the pink Twi'lek address his thoughts and opinions. However, as soon as Seraphina finished instructing, he craned his neck to look at the screen his master had shoved into his lap. The Jedi Way, unlike the Code, garnered his approval. "Y'said this was essential to the Jedi, right?" Aodh inquired, speaking quietly to not damage the tranquil atmosphere.

He pulled out the small stylus strapped across the datapad's side, and begin rapidly scrawling down notes and observations, flicking his eyes up to see if Seraphina would comment on anything.

The woman smiled as he spoke the words. They would be something he rarely had to think of in the future, but for now it was imperative that he received training as similar to other Padawans as possible. One could not claim the title of Jedi if they did not know of the basics, especially the Code, even if it were something rarely spoken of, or discussed at large among the others.

"It is, yes. Think of the Jedi Code as the mantra, while the framework for which all Jedi work in is the Jedi Way. We are peacekeepers. That does not mean we are pacifist, hardly the case at all, really. We are here to serve the people, all of the people. To protect them from oppression, harm, and most notably, the tyranny of the Sith. Jedi constantly strive to better themselves through learning. Even I, as a master, have more to learn than I can possibly do so in my lifetime. But to stop learning would be a disservice to myself, and those I serve. Finally, we are not rulers, or conquerors. We do not fight in wars so that we can in turn, rule over those we have defeated. The Jedi involvement in these conflicts are born of the need to aide in freedom and liberties. When you are finally ready to have your own lightsaber, you must understand that when you draw that weapon, it must be out of necessity, and you must be prepared to take a life, but never out of vengeance, or hatred. Does this make sense?"
